Someone once asked Harrison why he didn't just reject me if he didn't want me.
Harrison flashed a careless smirk. "She's good for killing time." I chased Harrison from the time I was eighteen until I turned twentytwo. I played the fool.
I did every stupid thing a girl could do for a guy. But the second those words hit my ears, four years of desperate obsession flatlined. I stopped clinging to him.
I threw that pieceoftrash necklace he gave me straight into the garbage, and moved completely out of his sight.
When his name popped up in the gossip columns with other women, I didn't even blink. When he paraded his new girlfriend around our social circle, I didn't throw a single fit.
Then came the day he announced he was actually tying the knot. He shoved the wedding invitation right into my hands. Everyone watched.
They all waited for me to shatter, waiting for me to lose my mind and beg.
Even his best friend interrogated me. "You're really not going to go after him?" His calloused fingers dug into my waist, the sheer, solid weight of his body pinning me flush against the mattress.
The heat radiating off his skin swallowed all the oxygen in the room.
My chest heaved, a broken gasp tearing from my throat. "Holden." My voice broke, barely a whisper. "If you're going to ask me that… could you at least get off me first?" Chapter 1 The night Harrison brought a date to our friend group's party marked exactly three months since we last saw each other.
In our circle, that was practically a miracle.
My friends lowered their voices, trying to comfort me. "Sloane, if it gets to be too much later, just make up an excuse and leave." "Let's just keep the peace, okay?
It's Cooper's birthday." I took a sip from my glass, not even bothering to lift my eyelids. Harrison's new girlfriend was gorgeous. They looked perfect together.
When they walked in holding hands, every single person in the room instinctively looked at me.
I just sat there, keeping my posture relaxed and a faint smile on my lips. "Everyone, meet my girlfriend, Camille." When Harrison dropped the word girlfriend, his gaze casually swept over my face.
My expression didn't shift. My smile stayed pinned in place. I didn't even twitch an eyebrow. Harrison didn't look at me again. The vibe in the private booth gradually warmed up.
When it was time to cut the cake, the room turned into a chaotic mess. I used to be the loudest one in the room.
I'd smear frosting on someone and then duck behind Harrison, gripping his shirt. He'd always look annoyed, calling it childish and boring, but sometimes, he'd still shield me.
Not tonight. I stayed out of the crossfire. But my close friends didn't let me off the hook.
When they chased after me with a handful of cake, I dropped my smile and gave them a sharp warning look. They took the hint and immediately scattered to mess with someone else.
I navigated through the noisy crowd and headed out, making my way to the restroom to clean up.
But the second I stepped out the door, Harrison called out. "Sloane." I turned around on instinct. The dim hallway lights cast heavy shadows across Harrison's face.
We were standing close, but his expression was unreadable. "Can I help you?" Harrison didn't answer.
His eyes dropped to my collarbone. "You changed your necklace?" I paused for a halfsecond before recovering. "Yeah. I did." I had worn the old one for four years.
It was his gift for my eighteenth birthday. It used to be my favorite thing in the world.
He tilted his head, a faint smirk playing on his lips that I couldn't quite read. "Why didn't you show up to the last party?" The last party… I froze, a sudden rush of heat burning the tips of my ears.
I was supposed to go, but Holden had texted me last minute.
We both ended up bailing on everyone. "Avoiding me?" Harrison asked, his tone careless. "Something came up," I said. "Couldn't make it." Harrison didn't look convinced, but he didn't push it. "What do you think of Camille?" I gave him a deadhonest answer. "She's gorgeous.
Classy. You can tell she comes from a good family." Harrison stared at me, his gaze locked on mine. "I think so too. Makes me want to settle down.
Actually get married." "That's great," I said smoothly. "Make sure I get an invite." Harrison let out a short, dry laugh. "Sure.
You'll be the first on the list." With that, he seemed to lose interest. He turned on his heel and walked away.
I didn't stick around either, eager to get to the restroom and clean up.
But the moment I stepped near the sinks, I spotted Holden leaning against the wall, smoking. "I thought you were out of town?" I asked, pulling a paper towel from the dispenser to dab at my face.
Holden crushed his cigarette out.
He caught my eye in the mirror, his lips curving into a sharp smirk. "Finished early." His voice was a low drawl. "Otherwise, I would've missed the show." Chapter 2 I spun around, slamming the crumpled, dirty paper towel right against his solid chest. "Holden, you better shut your mouth." He didn't even flinch.
If anything, he looked amused. "What? I leave town for two days, and you two are already rekindling the flame?" "There is no flame. There never was." I shot him a cold glare.
Holden gave a slow nod. "Fair enough." He suddenly closed the distance between us, stepping directly into my space. "Don't move." "What is it?" Holden's rough thumb swiped hard across my collarbone, wiping away a smear of frosting.
His eyes darkened. "Your dress is ruined. Take it off." "I know." "I picked up a new one for you on my trip.
Want to try it on?" Walking to his suite upstairs, my mind felt thick with a heavy haze. Truth be told, we had never gotten along. Growing up, he relentlessly tormented me.
He complained that I was a crybaby, yet he never missed a single chance to push my buttons.
Later, when I spent all my time chasing after Harrison, the rest of our circle treated me like a walking joke. They didn't mean any real harm.
But Holden… he seemed disgusted by my desperation. We barely exchanged a word over the years. Until that one night.
The night everything went off the rails and we ended up in bed together. Now, everything was twisted. I had deleted his number. I planned to take the secret to my grave.
But Holden was acting like he wanted to claim me for real. The last time we saw each other, I had fully intended to draw a hard line.
Instead, we ended up tearing the sheets off the bed again. And honestly? The second time was dangerously better than the first. The truth was, I was hooked on the rush.
I caught myself studying him in the elevator mirrors. He was reckless. Untamable. And cursed with an unfairly perfect face. But he wasn't just another trustfund playboy.
Born into a powerful military and political dynasty, he had spent years serving in the Special Forces. His body was practically built for violence.
My mind flashed to the deep Vcut of his lower abdomen. The solid, unyielding muscle. I remembered sobbing, calling him a monster while my nails clawed his back raw.
He hadn't even flinched. He just tried to clumsily soothe me.
A sudden, heavy knot of frustration tightened in my chest. "Sloane." Holden suddenly yanked me flush against his body. "What's going on in that head of yours?
The tips of your ears are burning." "Thinking about your bo—I mean, how you stay in such good shape." I covered my face, avoiding his intense stare.
But underneath the embarrassment, my resolve hardened. Tonight was the last time. When it was over, I would lay down the law. Cut all ties. Draw a permanent line.
This secret was going to rot in the dark with both of us. The second the suite door clicked shut, Holden shoved me flat against the wood. He was getting better at this.
His large hand slid firmly behind my shoulders, shielding my spine from the hard impact. "Shower first," I gasped, pushing at his chest between bruising kisses. Holden was starving.
His palm flattened against the dip of my lower back, dragging my hips flush against his rigid heat.
He ducked his head, a low, rough sound tearing from his throat as his mouth devoured mine. The kiss deepened into something dark and demanding. My knees buckled.
I couldn't keep my balance in my heels anymore. I kicked them off and stepped directly onto his shoes. Holden's breathing hitched.
He hoisted me up by my thighs, carrying me straight toward the bathroom. Every step felt like he was trying to crush me into his very bones.
Hot water blasted from the showerhead overhead, soaking through our clothes and swallowing us whole. Holden framed my face with his rough hands, kissing me over and over.
The hot steam softened the sharp, ruthless lines of his face. When his dark eyes locked onto mine through the haze, my breath caught in my throat.
For one terrifying second, I almost fell for him. Chapter 3 "Sloane…" He lowered his head, pressing his forehead against mine. My name tore from his throat in a rough rasp.
My mind spun, my breath shattering into broken gasps as he drove into me. He locked his fingers with mine. "Is it better than last time?" he asked, his voice dark and thick.
I bit down hard on my lower lip, refusing to give him the satisfaction of an answer.
Instead, my sharp nails dug into the flexed muscles of his arms, carving fresh, bloody crescents into his skin. When the final round ended, Holden carried me to the bathroom.
I draped my arms over the edge of the tub, watching him wash off under the showerhead. Scalding water pounded against his wide, heavily muscled back, spraying across the tile.
Maybe the sex was just too damn good, because all those years of hating his guts felt like they were washing away. But I wasn't delusional. We weren't each other's type.
Ending this early was the best move for both of us. Holden lifted me out of the tub.
He yanked a massive bath towel off the rack and wrapped me up tight, his rough movements claiming my space completely.
Bundled up, I sat comfortably on the bathroom counter, letting him blowdry my hair. Once he finished, he scooped me up and carried me back to bed.
I slumped against his solid shoulder, my head swimming with exhaustion. "Holden." "Yeah." "We shouldn't see each other tomorrow. Don't come looking for me, either.
I'm blocking you on everything. Texts, calls, socials… you're blocked." I took a breath. "Whatever happened between us… take it to your grave.
You don't breathe a word of this to anyone." Holden stopped dead in his tracks. "Sloane." His voice dropped into a heavy, dangerous rumble. My eyelids were too heavy.
I managed to crack them open, catching the tight, rigid clench of his jaw before total exhaustion dragged me under. He laid me on the mattress.
Through the haze, I barely felt the bed dip, catching the faint, bitter twist of his lips. "Sloane, you don't have a heart," he muttered.
But the darkness swallowed the words before they could fully register. The next morning.
Right in front of Holden's face, I deleted his number and blocked every single one of his social accounts. He sat motionless on the couch.
He lit a cigarette and wedged it between his fingers, but didn't take a single drag.
I yanked up the zipper on the new dress he bought me and walked straight toward the door without looking back. "This is it.
Bye." For the next month, Holden and I didn't cross paths once. But maybe I was losing my mind, because Harrison started popping up everywhere I went.
I started bailing on random gettogethers, doing whatever it took to avoid breathing the same air as him. Until a mutual friend's engagement party.
There was no getting out of that one. Harrison hit the open bar way too hard that night.
Somewhere along the line, he decided to lose his mind. "Sloane, what is your deal with me?" I stared at him. "You're wasted, Harrison.
Go sleep it off." "We've been friends for years." He stepped into my space. "You dodging me like this makes it look like I did something to screw you over." "I've just been busy—" "Save it, Sloane.
I know exactly what's going on in that head of yours." Harrison let out a cold, arrogant scoff. "But throwing a tantrum isn't going to change anything.
You can't even compete with Camille." I actually let out a laugh. Throwing a tantrum? "You're out of your mind." I grabbed my purse and turned to leave.
Harrison's hand shot out, locking around my wrist. "You used to be insanely jealous." He stared me down. "Why aren't you acting out this time?
Did you finally figure out that crying about it won't work?" Chapter 4 I ripped my arm out of Harrison's grip.
That's when I spotted Holden standing a few feet away, watching the whole scene with a dark, amused smirk.
A hot flash spiked in my chest, my jaw tightening at that arrogant, spectator look on his face. I pulled out my phone and opened my socials.
Holden had requested to follow my private account a few times recently, and I had ignored every single one. This time, I hit accept.
Then, I shot him a direct message. [Down for another round?] Holden took exactly thirty seconds to reply. [I'm in.] [Same hotel suite,] I typed back.
I hit send, then immediately blocked his account again. As Declan's engagement party wound down, I told my friends I was heading out, grabbed my purse, and left early.
Harrison asked where I was going. I completely ignored him. His fragile ego couldn't handle the cold shoulder, so he didn't follow.
Right as I slipped out of the banquet hall, I heard a few of the guys calling out to Holden. "Holden, you heading out too?" "Thought we were getting drinks after this?" "Got some personal business to handle.
First round's on me next time," Holden replied. Harrison stood up, stepping in his way. "What kind of personal business is more important than Declan's engagement?
Seriously, you've been a ghost lately. What are you up to?" I stood hidden behind a massive potted palm, watching the group.
Holden was wearing a tailored black suit for the engagement party today. Standing next to Harrison, he easily towered over him.
Unlike Harrison's lean, scrawny build that lacked any real power, Holden's body was forged in the Special Forces.
He was pure, aggressive muscle—broad shoulders, narrow waist, radiating a suffocating amount of pure testosterone. My mind flashed back to the two nights we spent together.
Holden could effortlessly hoist me up with just one arm. He hadn't even stopped moving from the bedroom all the way to the bathroom.
And later… I remembered the desperate, reckless way I completely lost control, leaving a slick, wet mess all over his lower stomach. A fierce rush of heat flooded my face.
I pressed the cool back of my hand against my burning cheeks. When I looked back at Holden, it was like he practically felt my eyes on him.
His gaze snapped straight toward my hiding spot. I instinctively took a step back, my heart pounding erratically against my ribs. "It's important," Holden said smoothly.
Harrison looked even more curious. "What's going on?
You're acting way too serious." "Don't tell me you actually got a girlfriend?" one of the guys joked. "Yeah, I've caught him staring at his phone nonstop lately." "Wait, are you really dating someone?
Who is she? Do we know her?" Holden smiled, but the expression was dead. It didn't reach his eyes at all.
For some reason, that forced smile made him look totally isolated. "I'll tell you guys later," Holden brushed them off. "She's pretty guarded.
She doesn't want to go public right now. I'm not saying another word, or she'll be pissed." Harrison studied him, looking skeptical. "Are you serious?
I haven't seen a single girl around you." "It's recent." Holden locked eyes with Harrison, his stare heavy and calculated. "Whenever she's ready to go public, I'll bring her around to meet you guys." "Alright, we won't get in the way of your big night," Harrison said, backing off with a teasing smirk. "About time you got some action." He dropped his voice to a sleazy whisper. "You finally hook up with her yet?" Holden's face instantly went icecold. "I don't talk about that kind of stuff.
It's disrespectful to her." Harrison's smirk dropped instantly, leaving him standing there looking awkward.
Chapter 5 Holden didn't let him hang out to dry for too long. "I'm heading out.
Drinks are on me next time." "Yeah, just make sure you bring the new girl around," one of the guys called out. "Seriously, we're all dying to meet her." Holden threw them a lazy smile in agreement, turned, and walked out.
I stayed hidden behind the potted palms, watching until he pushed through the revolving glass doors.
Right as he disappeared, someone in the group muttered, "Is it just me, or have Sloane and Holden both been MIA at the exact same time lately?
You don't think they're hooking up, do you?" Harrison's jaw clenched tight. "What the hell are you talking about?" he snapped. "Holden's hated Sloane since we were kids.
You know how he is. He can't stand clingy, desperate girls." "True. Pretty sure they'd rather kill each other than hook up," someone laughed, and the conversation quickly moved on.
But I could see the rigid tension settling into Harrison's shoulders. His jaw clenched tight as he stared out the glass doors, glaring at the empty space where Holden had just been.
He probably noticed I was gone, too.
I watched his brow furrow as he likely tried to connect the dots, only to quickly shake his head—visibly brushing it off as some stupid coincidence.
In his arrogant mind, Holden and I despising each other was a universal, undeniable fact.
But what Harrison didn't know was that the two people he thought hated each other's guts were currently heading to the exact same hotel suite.
When I stepped out of the shower, Holden was already lounging on the suite's leather couch. "There's a second bathroom.
Why aren't you washing up?" I asked, roughly toweldrying my hair.
He leaned back, his dark eyes tracking my every move. "Thought we were never speaking again?" I shot him a flat look. "You know where the door is." A selfdeprecating smirk pulled at the corner of his mouth, but he stood up anyway.
He closed the distance between us and plucked the towel right out of my hands. My hair was long, and I always hated the tedious chore of drying it.
If he wanted to play the servant, I was more than happy to let him.
He gently worked the towel through my wet strands, only switching off the blowdryer once it was halfdry. "I'm hitting the shower," he murmured. "Mm," I hummed lazily, sinking into the cushions and grabbing the TV remote.
Holden leaned down, stealing a quick, damp kiss off the corner of my mouth. "Wait for me." Fifteen minutes later, the water shut off.
The bathroom door swung open, and Holden walked out with nothing but a white towel slung low on his hips.
Broad shoulders tapering down to a ridiculously narrow waist—the absolute perfect Vcut. His chest and abs looked like they were carved out of solid stone.
Long legs, lean muscle, all wrapped in that ridiculously sexy, goldenhoney skin of his.
Even though we'd already crossed this line multiple times, seeing him stripped down like this still sent a wild jolt through my system.
I let my eyes greedily drag over his body for a few heavy seconds before forcing myself to look away. Holden caught the stare. A wicked, knowing smirk flashed across his face.
He ran a hand through his dripping hair, tossed his towel onto a chair, and stalked straight toward me.
He didn't give me a chance to react, scooping me off the couch. "Holden—" I gasped, my arms automatically flying up to hook around his neck.
I shot him a glaring warning, but a dark, teasing smirk played on his lips. "Sloane." "What?" "Just figuring out which position you want tonight." Chapter 6 The question was steeped in dark suggestion.
His mouth brushed the shell of my ear, our breath tangling in the nonexistent space between us. The heat radiating off his skin closed in on me.
When I finally managed to speak, my voice betrayed me, softening into a breathy whisper. "Don't act like you're some kind of expert." Holden let out a low, dark chuckle. "I did a lot of studying after last time." "You're out of your mind.
Is that all you think about?" "Want to test me?" I forced my face to stay blank, but my heart was slamming hard against my ribs. "Sure.
But if you disappoint me, I'm finding a replacement—" Holden crushed his mouth against mine, shutting me up. The rest of my threat was swallowed whole, turning into a muffled gasp.
The kiss was punishing and heavy. He backed me up until my knees hit the mattress, pinning me deep into the soft blankets. He yanked the tie of my robe loose.
His hands—hardened from years in the Special Forces, rough and calloused—gripped my skin. He was more aggressive this time. More demanding. A broken sound ripped from my throat.
His breathing shattered, turning harsh and ragged. "Sloane…" Holden's eyes were pitchblack, his voice scraping out rough and guttural. "Why does this feel different than the last two times?" I stared up at him through a hazy blur, my brain too foggy to process what he meant.
But that look pushed Holden over the edge. His burning mouth dragged down my skin, trailing agonizingly slow until he found the center of everything.
His hot, calloused palms clamped down hard on my lower back, pinning me flush against the edge of the mattress.
My spine arched on instinct, surrendering to his heavy grip. "Sloane, do you like this?" I shook my head, biting my lower lip hard enough to taste copper, refusing to give him the satisfaction.
But a hot, physiological tear leaked from the corner of my eye. Holden didn't verbally force it out of me.
Instead, every time I refused to answer, he just drove his hips forward with a ruthless, punishing thrust. "Sloane. Are you going to block me again
