The car crash wiped Killian's memory, erasing me from his mind with surgical precision.
Propped up on the hospital bed, the man who had once claimed me as his own now stared at me like I was a stranger. "You're really going to divorce me?" I stood three feet away, my voice stripped of all emotion. "Yeah." He didn't even bother to look up, his fingers flipping impatiently through the documents in his lap. "I'll have Simon draft the papers.
Once you sign, we're done." Simon stood out in the hallway, his tie pulled askew, his hands locked in a death grip on the doctor's brain scan report.
The entire New York elite circle knew that back then, to get his hands on me, Killian had destroyed his sworn enemy's engagement party, dropping to his knees on the deck of my private yacht just to beg me for a title.
I grabbed my bag and headed for the door. "Fine.
Send them to me when they're ready." He had no idea that before our wedding, he had already executed a toptier irrevocable trust, legally transferring eighty percent of his total assets and syndicate shares directly into my name.
Chapter 1 "Yeah." Perfect. Now he was just as stingy with his words toward me as he was with everyone else.
I pushed up the oversized Tom Ford sunglasses that concealed half my face, casually tossing my Birkin bag onto the leather sofa beside me.
I crossed my arms, sitting in a chair three feet away from his hospital bed. "No regrets?" "Yeah." "You're not going to consult Simon?" "I don't need anyone else calling the shots on my personal affairs." He flipped through the document folder from his business trip, not even bothering to look up.
Alright then. You can't save someone who's hellbent on jumping off a cliff. Killian, you better pray to god you never remember me for the rest of your life.
Don't say I didn't give you a chance. "Fine.
When do we sign the divorce papers?" He finally glanced up at me, a flicker of surprise in his eyes at how readily I agreed. "I'll have Simon draft the papers first.
Once you review and sign them, we're done." "Perfect. Just have Simon contact me directly." I stood up with fluid grace, grabbed my bag from the table, and walked out of the room.
The only sound left in my wake was the rustle of him turning pages. A few minutes later. "Mr. Killian, are you alright… Wait, you're alone?
Is your wife not here?" Simon rushed into the VIP suite, sweating bullets.
After getting my call about Killian's car accident, he had dropped his urgent tasks and bolted straight to the hospital. "She just left." "Left…?!" Killian stopped flipping through the syndicate's financial reports, his sharp gaze sweeping toward the door like a blade. "Does that surprise you?" "Nno, I just didn't expect you to let her leave first…" Simon hurriedly changed the subject. "Why couldn't I reach your phone?
Are you badly hurt?" "The phone's smashed.
Mild concussion." "I'll make a call and get someone to fix it right away." Simon pulled out his own phone, ready to dial, when Killian's cold voice stopped him. "Just bring me a new one.
Throw the broken piece of trash away.
And while you're at it, draft a divorce agreement." Simon was holding Killian's shattered phone in one hand while blindly texting me with the other, desperate to figure out what was going on.
The message had barely sent when Killian's words registered. He answered purely out of reflex. "Understood." When the reality of the order actually hit him, his head snapped up.
He swallowed hard, asking hesitantly, "Ffor whom?" Killian frowned, his tone dripping with impatience. "Who else do you work for besides me?" "Nno one." Simon swallowed hard, immediately lowering his head.
He didn't dare meet Killian's oppressive, dark gaze, his fingers blindly typing a frantic text to me under the radar. "Enough.
Sort out the paperwork and send it to me." Killian roughly loosened the silk tie around his neck.
A hollow, indescribable ache suddenly bloomed in his chest, as if something vital had been ripped away. He raised a hand to press against his throbbing temple.
It felt like he was missing something crucial. "Right away, Mr. Killian.
I'll step out now." Simon bolted from the room like he was escaping a firing squad, wiping the cold sweat from his forehead. This was madness. Pure madness.
Did the boss and his wife have a fight? That didn't make any sense… Considering everything Killian had done just to marry her back then… there was no way he'd willingly let her go.
Simon couldn't wrap his head around it.
He grabbed a brandnew phone, delivered it to the VIP suite, and then retreated to sort out the documents Killian demanded… and the divorce papers.
I was already back at my penthouse when I checked Simon's texts on my phone. [It was his idea to divorce.] [Simon: Did you two get into a fight?] [No.] Chapter 2 [Simon: Is Mr.
Killian's… brain functioning okay? I mean, how severe is the concussion?] [Me: It's just a mild concussion, isn't it?] [Simon: Are you two seriously getting a divorce?] [Me: Yeah.
Make sure you send me the papers the second they're drafted.] I stared at the screen, watching the typing bubble pulse endlessly on Simon's end. [Me: By the way, his phone is smashed.
Make sure you get it fixed.] [Simon: …Mr.
Killian made me buy a brandnew one.] A dark scoff escaped my lips. [Me: Got it.] I spent the next few days basking in my newfound independence. It was intoxicating.
Utterly liberating. I texted my toptier Hollywood agent, Diana, telling her I was ready to take back the vanity fair.
She was one of the few people who knew about my marriage to Killian.
Her immediate reaction was sheer disbelief that he was actually letting me out of my gilded cage. [Me: He asked for a divorce.
Naturally, I need to get back to making my own money.] [Diana: ???????] [Diana: Are you insane?
Even if you dragged another man back to your Beverly Hills mansion, there's no way that psychopath would let you go. What the hell did you do?] [Me: I didn't do a damn thing.
It was his idea.] [Diana: …Is his brain functioning properly?] I fully understood why everyone who heard about the divorce immediately questioned his sanity.
They all knew exactly what Killian had sacrificed to hunt me down. They knew the terrifying depths of his obsession. [Me: Who knows.
We're probably finalizing the paperwork in a few days.] [Diana: Alright.
Let me see what reality shows or major productions are casting right now.] [Me: Thanks.] I tossed my phone onto the marble counter and locked eyes with my reflection in the bathroom mirror.
A waterfall of waistlength hair spilled over my shoulders.
The woman staring back at me had a flawless hourglass figure, her long, sculpted legs peaking through the slit of the silk robe.
Those aggressively predatory eyes radiated a lethal, magnetic pull.
Years of being Killian's fiercely protected wife had only sharpened my edges into something dangerous and exquisite.
I pulled the silk robe tighter around myself and walked into the master bedroom.
The massive king bed was icecold, completely devoid of the scorching heat of the body that usually kept me caged in his arms.
Straight out of the hospital, Killian moved directly into his private penthouse suite at the top of the Manhattan syndicate headquarters. A knock echoed at the door.
Killian snapped his custom matteblack fountain pen shut.
He tore at the Windsor knot of his tie, his breathing turning heavy and erratic. "Come in." Simon stepped inside, offering a sleek folder before immediately backing away to a safe distance. "Mr.
Killian, here is the drafted divorce agreement. Please review it." Killian seriously suspected Simon was the one who got hit by a car.
For days, the assistant had been hesitating, swallowing his words like a coward. "I'll look at it later." Noticing Simon was still rooted to the spot, Killian pulled off his glasses. "Is there something else?" Simon hesitated again. "Spit it out.
Or keep your mouth shut permanently." "Yes, sir!
Are you absolutely certain you want to divorce your wife?" "Is this what you've been choking on for the past three days?" "Yes." "Yes." Killian abruptly shoved himself up from the desk.
His expensive leather shoes thudded heavily against the plush carpet.
He closed the distance, looming over Simon with a suffocating dominance that instantly vacuumed all the oxygen from the room. "If that's all, get out." "Also… does the family trust board and your parents know about this?" Killian's dark eyes locked onto Simon like a sniper's crosshairs. "This is my business." He pointed toward the exit. "Get out." "Yes, sir." Killian sneered inwardly, thinking his assistant was an absolute idiot.
That woman was ninetynine percent likely an arranged marriage pawn forced on him by his parents, though he had no idea why his past self had ever agreed to it.
If the board and his parents found out, it would only make severing the tie a nightmare. Fucking idiot.
Later that afternoon, Simon received a text ordering him back to the penthouse. Simon felt like he was walking a tightrope over a minefield.
Warning him was a death sentence; staying silent felt just as dangerous. "Mr.
Killian." "I reviewed the divorce papers," Killian stated coldly, his tone leaving no room for argument. "They're acceptable. Send them to her immediately." Chapter 3 "…Mr.
Killian, she said she'd sign under whatever conditions you set.
If you think it's ready, you can just sign it and I'll deliver it to her." Killian frowned, his pen hovering over the document.
He pressed a hand hard against his chest, suppressing a sudden surge of nausea and unexplainable heart palpitations.
Seeing this visceral reaction, Simon mistakenly thought the boss was finally regretting his decision to divorce.
He scrambled to say, "I'll immediately contact your wi—" "Schedule a full cardiac exam for me." "What did you just say?" Killian demanded, his gaze locking onto Simon after taking a moment to ground himself. "Nnothing.
I said understood." "Good." Killian aggressively slashed his signature across the divorce papers. "Take it to her." "Yes, sir." I received the digital copy of the divorce agreement from Simon. [Me: Acceptable.
But I'm not at the estate right now.] [Simon: You left the house?] [Me: Yeah. On set.] [Simon: You left the city?! Did you tell Mr. Killian?
He's still at the penthouse!] [Me: We're getting a divorce. Did you really think things were going to stay the same?] [Simon: …Please stay safe.] [Me: I will.
I'll let you know when I'm back. You can bring the hard copies then.] [Simon: Understood.] I tossed my phone onto the table.
Beside me, a smooth, familiar male voice drifted over. "Everything alright?
Someone looking for you?" I casually picked up a crystal tumbler and took a sip of vintage Macallan. "No one important." The hotshot producer, Howard, walked over with a glass of whiskey, loudly interrupting us. "Hey, what kind of flirting are you two doing over here?
I said years ago you were a perfect match, it's just a shame Nova backed out of that blockbuster." He swayed slightly, alcohol heavily lacing his breath. "But hey… it all worked out!
I honestly never expected you to make a comeback, let alone join our show, hahaha!" I subtly rolled my eyes.
If you guys weren't offering the fattest paycheck for the absolute least amount of work, there is zero chance I'd be stepping foot on your set.
Yes, I had taken on the most explosive, highestrated reality dating show in America. Technically, I wasn't single just yet, but the ink was practically drying on the paperwork.
I had nothing to feel guilty about.
The moment I landed in Miami and met the producers, Simon had started rapidfiring texts, making me think Killian had miraculously regained his memory for a second.
What I hadn't expected was that this dating show also featured my former rumored industry flame, Rhys. But there was no need to feed that detail to Simon.
Seeing Rhys here was a genuine shock. After all, he was an Oscarwinning Alister now.
Slumming it on a reality dating show fueled by cheap gimmicks and drama was beneath his current status. After the wrap party, I headed back to my luxury hotel suite.
Fresh out of the shower, I picked up my phone and saw a string of messages from Killian. [Killian: Is there a clause in the divorce agreement you're dissatisfied with?] [Me: No.] [Killian: Simon informed me you haven't signed.] [Me: I'm not at home.] Killian stared at that single line of text, his brain misfiring for a split second.
When he snapped back to reality, he stared blankly at the words his fingers had typed out purely on instinct: Where are you? Why did you leave by yourself?
His brow furrowed sharply. He pressed his palm against his racing heart, taking a heavy breath to shove down the sudden spike of manic agitation.
He aggressively backspaced the text, clearing the field, and typed something else. [Killian: Don't forget to sign when you return.] [Me: Ok.] Killian stared deadeyed at the chat interface, which remained completely silent.
His Adam's apple bobbed with difficulty, the tie suddenly choking the air from his lungs.
He tore open the top two buttons of his dress shirt, his chest heaving irregularly, knuckles turning a dead white from his vicelike grip on the phone.
He opened his chat with Simon. [Killian: Find a slot in my schedule.
Book that cardiac exam immediately.] Simon had absolutely no idea what kind of psychotic break his boss was having.
All he knew was that ever since he reported his wife hadn't signed and was out of town, Mr. Killian had been acting… completely unhinged.
One second, the aura around him was calm; the next, the atmospheric pressure dropped so low it felt like being shoved into a meat freezer.
Chapter 4 Simon felt like if his immune system wasn't made of steel, the sheer stress would have put him in the hospital with a fever by now. "Understood." Killian's long, powerful fingers gripped the medical report.
He read through it twice, a sense of absurdity washing over him. "No issues?" "That is correct, Mr. Killian. Your heart is in perfect condition.
We found absolutely nothing wrong." The toptier private physician pushed up his goldrimmed glasses, carefully reviewing the data. "Mr. Killian, your vitals are completely normal.
What specific discomfort are you experiencing?" Killian remained silent for a moment before standing up to leave. "Nothing." Simon was waiting with the car at the hospital entrance. "Mr.
Killian, are you alright?" Killian leaned back against the RollsRoyce's premium leather seats, his dark, murky eyes locking onto Simon through the rearview mirror without a single trace of warmth. "I am perfectly fine." "Yyes, sir." Simon quickly snapped his head forward, and the luxury vehicle slowly glided into traffic. "Has she signed yet?" "She mentioned the shoot will take a week, so she should be back at the estate by tomorrow afternoon." "You certainly seem to know her schedule." Killian hadn't even registered the sharp sting of jealousy in his own voice before a sudden slam of the brakes threw him slightly off balance. "What the—" "Is that your wife?!" The sharp reprimand died on Killian's tongue, cut off by Simon's shocked gasp.
Killian followed the direction of his pointing finger.
Through the bulletproof glass of the stretch limousine, the very woman who had been destroying his peace of mind for the past few days was standing right by a corner coffee shop.
Killian methodically straightened his bespoke suit jacket before slowly lifting his eyes to look outside. "Where?" Simon was utterly speechless.
Why didn't you just wait until the entire street was empty before looking up?
The only person who actually cared about your suits isn't even looking, so who are you fixing your image for? "Maybe I was mistaken," Simon muttered. "Then drive." Killian was genuinely starting to believe that ninety percent of his headaches were directly caused by his assistant. "Yes, sir." [Simon: Have you returned yet?] [Me: Yes.
How did you know? Didn't Killian pull all the security detail stationed around me?] [Simon: Mr. Killian and I saw you on the road.] [Me: What did he say?] [Simon: …Mr.
Killian didn't see you.] [Me: Okay. Don't forget to bring me the divorce papers tomorrow.] [Simon: Understood.] "Mr.
Killian, she has arrived home." Killian didn't look up, his tone freezing. "Did I ask?" "…No, sir.
She asked me to bring the divorce agreement to her tomorrow afternoon so she can sign it." There it was again. That inexplicable heart palpitation and suffocating agitation.
It felt like something absolutely critical was draining out of his chest. Killian's jawline tightened so hard it ached.
He opened his mouth, and the voice that came out was so hoarse it sounded completely foreign to him.
It was a sound laced with an uncontrollable dryness and a terrifying trace of losing control that even he didn't fully register. "She… brought it up herself?" Simon stared at the CEO, who was currently drowning in a hell of his own making. "Yes, sir." "I just remembered I have a business trip to Miami tomorrow.
You're coming with me." "Tomorrow? Mr.
Killian, we don't have any—" Simon immediately caught the darkening storm in Killian's eyes, his expression rigid and exuding the dangerous pressure of an incoming hurricane. "Yes, sir.
I'll make the arrangements immediately." I received a text from Simon.
They were heading out on a business trip and wouldn't be able to deliver the divorce papers for the next few days. [Me: Will it take long?
I have to go out of town again in a few days.] [Simon: It's uncertain at the moment. How long will you be gone this time?] [Me: A week.] [Me: Forget it.
We'll deal with it later.] I stared at Simon standing right in front of me, pressing a hand to my forehead. "What are you doing here?" Simon hadn't expected such a massive coincidence, running into me while grabbing a bite. "Mr.
Killian and I are here on a business trip. Are you also working here in Miami?" "Killian is here too?" "He's already returned to his hotel suite.
I'm just sorting out his itinerary." "Perfect timing. Did you bring the divorce papers?" Before Simon could even answer, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed nearby.
A tall, broadshouldered silhouette stepped slowly out from the shadows.
Chapter 5 "Someone you know, Nova?" Rhys stopped right beside me, fluidly stepping into my personal space to pull me into his protective perimeter. "Yeah.
Why did you come out here?" "You've been gone a while.
I was getting worried." Rhys's lips curled into a dangerously confident smirk, his gaze aggressively locking onto my lips. "Rhys?" Simon blurted out in shock
