Preview · Chapter 1
My husband's little secretary maxed out my credit card. She actually called me a useless trophy wife. I snapped. I cut her access. Surprisingly, my husband didn't blow up.
Instead, he smiled. He plotted his revenge for my birthday. He dragged me to a Michelinstar French restaurant. He ordered expensive wine and truffles. Then, he vanished.
The waiter dropped the check. I slapped down my card. The machine declined it. Right on cue, he strutted through the double doors. He gripped his secretary close.
A pack of his frat bros trailed behind them. They yanked out their phones. "You love trapping people with a dead card, right?" he sneered. "Let's see how you like it".
But he missed one major red flag. He stood seconds away from paying for this arrogant stunt with total bankruptcy. Chapter 1 It started last month.
My husband's little secretary swiped my card dry and mocked me as nothing but a useless trophy wife right in the middle of a highend French restaurant.
I cut off her card on the spot.
She couldn't foot her massive bill, was utterly humiliated in front of everyone, and the manager held her in the back office under security watch until the police threatened to press fraud charges.
Julian found out. He just chuckled and tapped the bridge of my nose. "Come on, Elara. Aren't you a little old to be acting so jealous over a little girl?
You made her a laughingstock." He didn't yell. He didn't even argue. He acted like the whole thing never happened. Until tonight. My birthday.
Julian insisted on taking me to a private dining room at the city's most exclusive French spot.
He ordered course after course—caviar, wagyu, and a dozen bottles of vintage Bordeaux.
He claimed his elite circle of friends would be joining us shortly. "Sit tight, wifey," he whispered, pressing a quick kiss to my temple. "I need to take a quick call.
I'll be right back to celebrate with you." I waited. The ice in my water glass melted. The waiters started clearing empty tables. Closing time hit. No friends showed up. No Julian.
I pulled out the sleek black card to settle the astronomical bill.
The manager swiped it, frowned, and slid it back across the marble counter. "Miss Elara, this card is frozen." "Frozen?" Julian gave me that card.
Before we left the house tonight, he took my personal cards out of my clutch. He swore tonight was all on him. I actually fell for it.
I thought I had hit the jackpot with a truly understanding and generous husband. Now, my phone screen stared back at me. Thirty missed calls. Straight to voicemail.
If I couldn't clear this check, things were going to get ugly fast.
The manager's polite customerservice smile vanished, replaced by a cold, hard glare. "Do you have another form of payment, Miss Elara?" He tapped his pen against the leather check presenter. "I'll remind you that we don't do tabs here.
You made that perfectly clear to us last month, didn't you?" My stomach dropped. Last month. Chloe. The declined card. A sickening realization clawed its way up my throat.
This wasn't a misunderstanding. This was a setup. Julian set up this whole night just to get revenge for his little secretary. Click. Clack.
The sound of sharp leather heels hitting the marble floor echoed from the entrance. I whipped my head around. Julian strolled through the grand archway.
His arm was locked tightly around Chloe's waist. She glared at me, her lips curled into a vicious, triumphant smirk.
A whole entourage of Julian's rich buddies poured in behind them.
They crossed their arms, phones out, eyes hungry for a trainwreck. "Elara," Julian's voice echoed, dripping with condescension. "You love punishing people by cutting their funds, right?" He stopped a few feet away, tilting his head. "So experience it.
Tell me, what's your plan now that you're the one holding the empty bag?" The crowd behind him erupted. "I heard she grew up dirt poor.
Just some charity case who got dumb luck bagging a CEO. Now look at her—hubby brings the shiny new upgrade to watch her crash and burn." "Serves her right!
That's what happens when you rely on a pretty face to climb the ladder." "Exactly. A sugar baby's shelf life is short.
The second a rich guy finds a younger obsession, the luxury ride is over." My fingernails dug into my palms. Sharp crescents of pain grounded me.
The humiliation burned like acid in my veins, making my ears ring. As I guessed, Julian dug this massive grave for me just to let Chloe blow off some steam.
Julian guided Chloe to the table right in front of me.
He pulled out a velvet chair for her with exaggerated politeness. "Don't worry, Chloe," he murmured, loud enough for the entire room to catch. "Exactly the way Elara humiliated you, I'm going to pay it back tenfold." Chapter 2 Chloe's face lit up with a sickeningly sweet smile.
She threw her arms around Julian's neck and smashed her lips against his. "Thank you, Julian," she purred.
Then, she turned her venomous gaze to me. "Elara, you're nothing but a useless trophy wife.
What gave you the right to cut off my card?" Without missing a beat, she snatched a full bottle of vintage Bordeaux from the table and hurled it straight at my feet. Crash.
Glass shattered across the marble.
Deep red liquid splattered up my bare legs and speckled my face. "Look at you," Chloe cackled, her voice grating against my eardrums. "Julian is paying for me now.
I can smash a hundred bottles and he’ll cover it. But you? You're screwed." Julian leaned back, a cruel smirk playing on his lips. "Don't glare at me like that, Elara.
If you actually have your own money, feel free to settle the bill and walk out." The peanut gallery of trustfund bros howled with laughter. "Like she has a dime to her name!" "Those truffles and opened bottles alone cost more than her life.
She's trapped." "She’s been living off Julian’s black card since day one.
Take the billionaire away, and she’s just another broke nobody." The smirk vanished, replaced by a predatory glare that swept across the dining room. "Let me make one thing clear.
Anyone who dares to cover Elara's tab is my enemy. You cross me, you cross my family's entire empire." The clinking of silverware and hushed chatter instantly died.
Everyone in Manhattan knew Julian's family controlled half the city's real estate. No one possessed a death wish big enough to defy him.
A few business partners I maintained good relations with had started to shift in their seats, reaching for their wallets. At Julian's threat, they froze.
They quickly sank back into the velvet booths, avoiding my eyes entirely. Whispers hissed through the restaurant like venom. "He's not bluffing.
The man is ruthless." "The side piece definitely outranks the legal wife.
Talk about a brutal downgrade." "I thought he was just teaching her a lesson, but he's actually destroying her." "With a threat like that hanging over her head, who’s going to save her?" The buzzing in my ears escalated into a deafening roar.
My vision tunneled.
I marched forward and grabbed the lapel of Julian's custom Tom Ford suit, my knuckles turning stark white. "Julian," I choked out, my voice shaking with raw disbelief. "Are you seriously humiliating your own wife in public over a pathetic little pickme?" Julian sneered.
His arm swung back. Smack. The sharp, stinging impact snapped my head to the side. "Yes." A metallic taste flooded my mouth. The restaurant spun into a nauseating blur.
My hand hovered over my burning cheek. I slowly turned my head back to face him, my lungs forgetting how to take in oxygen. Three years.
Three years playing the perfect, untouchable power couple. He had been the one who relentlessly chased me when I first moved to Manhattan. I remembered his eyes at the altar.
I remembered his voice trembling as he vowed eternal loyalty, swearing on his life to protect me until his dying breath. Just three years. Every vow, every tender memory—shattered.
He destroyed it all with one cold, calculated stunt. The whispers were right. Marrying into extreme wealth with nothing but a pretty face meant signing away your dignity.
The moment a younger, shinier obsession caught his eye, the luxury ride was over. But Julian was missing one massive, fatal piece of the puzzle.
I didn't marry into his family for their pathetic bank accounts. I didn't need his money. I married him because I loved him. Chapter 3 My vision swam, red hot and fractured.
Julian didn't even look at my bloodshot eyes.
He casually pulled a crisp linen napkin from the table and wiped the hand that had just struck me, like touching me was a disease. "You knew my little secretary was my favorite," he sneered, tossing the crumpled napkin onto the floor. "But you just had to push it." He leaned forward, his voice dropping to a lethal pitch. "Elara, if you can't clear this tab, I'm having my security strip every piece of designer fabric off your body.
You will walk out of this restaurant naked." The room erupted. Vicious, greedy eyes raked over my body. "Ruthless.
He's literally stripping his wife for the new girl." "Not his wife for long.
By tomorrow, she'll be street trash again." "Shut up and watch." A group of older Wall Street executives in the corner leaned forward.
Their gazes felt like sandpaper against my skin. "Let's see if the gold digger actually has the body to back up her attitude, huh?" Heat crawled up my neck. My chest tightened.
Every calculated move finally clicked into place. He had taken my cards before we left the house to lower my guard. I dug my trembling fingers into my clutch—my phone was dead.
He planned every single second of this execution. I had nothing but the silk couture clinging to my back. "Clock's ticking, Elara.
The restaurant needs to close," Chloe chimed in. "Don't tell me you actually have zero cash." She pulled a slim cigarette from her purse and lit it.
Taking a long, dramatic drag, she stepped right into my space and blew a thick cloud of toxic gray smoke directly into my face. "What a shame.
I guess you're going to get locked up in a precinct for fraud. Exactly what you did to me, remember?" The acrid smoke burned my eyes. Something inside me snapped. I lunged.
My hand connected hard with her face. The cigarette flew, scattering ash across the pristine white tablecloth.
Glasses shattered as total chaos broke out. "Get her off!" Julian roared. He grabbed Chloe, his eyes frantic with concern.
Before I could land another hit, his massive bodyguards slammed into me, grabbing my arms and hurling me backward. My knees hit the hard marble floor.
Pain shot up my spine. "Are you insane, Elara? Stop!" Julian barked. I gasped for air. I locked my eyes onto his. "What's wrong?
You can dish it out and play games, but you can't take it when someone hits back?" My ribs ached. I stared at the man I spent three years building up. Julian's real estate empire?
It didn't explode out of nowhere. I paved his path with my blood and my connections.
When the city's most dangerous underground syndicates tried to swallow his company whole, one word from me made them back off in terror. Because I wasn't some broke charity case.
I was the sole heiress to the Vanguard legacy. Old money. East Coast royalty. Tonight was supposed to be the night. I planned to drop the mask.
I was going to introduce him to my parents, the apex predators of the elite world. Instead, he proved how fast a heart could turn black. I read him completely wrong.
A bitter taste flooded my mouth. "Julian. Are you truly dead set on humiliating me in front of the whole world tonight?" He let out a sharp, breathless laugh. "What do you think?
I didn't set this massive stage just for the ambiance." Knowing the bodyguards had me pinned, Chloe stepped out from behind Julian. Her eyes flashed with pure malice.
She drew her fist back and punched me hard across the cheek. "Listen up, you useless bitch." She grabbed a piece of bloody, rare Wagyu from a nearby plate and hurled it onto the floor right in front of my face. "Option one: you keep your clothes and rot in a jail cell.
Option two: you strip completely naked, bite this steak, and crawl your way out the front door barking like a dog." She let out a piercing shriek of a laugh. "The only difference is, one leaves you with clothes, and the other leaves you with zero dignity.
Hurry up and pick. I can't wait." Chapter 4 Dozens of eyes burned into my skin. I dug my nails into my palms, the sharp pain grounding me. I stared dead at Julian.
Zero emotion. "Fine. You chose this. When your entire empire files for Chapter 11, that's strictly on you." Chloe threw her head back and shrieked with laughter.
The whole room instantly joined in. "Is she delusional?" someone yelled. "Did she read too many Wattpad stories and think she's some undercover billionaire?" "She's losing her grip on reality." Julian's jaw ticked.
He grabbed a ceramic plate of caviar from the nearest table and hurled it right at me, clipping my shoulder and staining my silk couture. "Stop the pathetic bluffing.
Bankrupt my family? You?" He scoffed, adjusting his cuffs. "Worry about your own miserable reality.
Manager!" The manager materialized instantly, two hulking security guards flanking him. He kept his voice professionally cold. "Miss Elara.
Will that be cash, or is someone wiring the funds?" At least he kept his customerservice mask intact. I scanned the sea of vultures.
My eyes locked onto a familiar face—a female venture capitalist I'd negotiated with back when I was closing Julian's early deals. I took a step toward her velvet booth.
She bolted upright, scrambling backward like I was contagious. "Elara, back off. I'm not covering your tab—" "Relax," I cut her off, holding my hand out. "I just need your phone.
I'm calling a friend to bring the cash." "She's still faking it!" Chloe cackled. "Who in Manhattan is going to cross Julian to bail you out?" She waved a manicured hand at the VC. "Let her call.
We'll give her thirty minutes." Chloe smirked, pointing at a corner table of older executives. "When she fails, I'll let those creepy Wall Street boomers tear that dress off her.
Julian's sloppy seconds must be a fun ride, right?" The executives leaned forward. Their eyes dragged over my legs, thick with disgustingly obvious lust.
The VC shoved her iPhone into my hand and practically ran away. I dialed a number I knew by heart. I told my friend I needed a massive cash drop within thirty minutes.
As the agonizing minutes bled out, the oppressive silence in the room stretched thin. Twenty minutes gone. Ten left.
Chloe tapped her stiletto frantically against the marble, her feigned patience completely snapping as she jumped to her feet. "I'm an idiot for letting this bitch stall.
Nobody is coming." "Exactly," a frat bro agreed. "She's just playing for time." Chloe snapped her fingers at the manager. "Break her legs first.
No one has a big enough death wish to cross Julian. Stop wasting my night." The security guards lunged forward, cracking their knuckles. My heart hammered violently against my ribs.
I threw my hand up. "Stop.
I have ten minutes left." I held my ground, glaring at them. "When the clock hits zero, the money walks through those doors." "Bullshit!" Chloe spat, her face twisting into an ugly scowl. "If ten minutes pass—hell, I'll give you twenty—and no one shows?
I will personally bite that bloody steak and crawl out of here like a feral dog." My eyes lit up as a sharp, dangerous thrill shot straight down my spine. "You said that," I whispered, my voice cutting cleanly through the noise. "Remember it." Chloe rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. "I said it.
Everyone here is my witness." Chapter 5 The dining room erupted into a frenzy. "Best dinner show in Manhattan," someone yelled from the back. "Who needs Broadway?" The clock hit zero.
A heavyset, sweating Wall Street boomer couldn't hold back anymore.
He lunged forward, his greedy hands reaching straight for my chest. "Don't touch me!" I slapped his hand away sharply, cutting off his advance.
He just leered, rubbing his skin. "Feisty.
I didn't even get a feel, but I can tell the merchandise is toptier." He glanced over his shoulder. "Julian, you throwing her to the wolves?" Julian downed the rest of his Bordeaux in one swallow.
The metallic clink of his silver Zippo lighter echoed as he casually flipped it open and shut. "Why not?" Julian smirked. "If her card declines, she's open season." "Hell yes.
I call dibs." The predators circled in. They completely ignored my freezing glare. Chloe's eyes practically glowed with sick excitement.
She pointed right at Julian's private security. "Pin her down. Let the boys have their fun." "Yes, ma'am." The muscle instantly swarmed me, locking my arms behind my back.
A sickening chill settled deep in my bones. I stared directly at the man I married. We were still legally bound.
Letting other men tear my clothes off in public was a direct shotgun blast to his own reputation. He didn't care.
He met my gaze with dead, empty eyes. "Don't look at me for salvation.
I only care about keeping Chloe happy." With Julian's official green light, the grotesque executives closed in. "Come on, sweetheart. My black card has no limit." "Ignore him, baby.
Come with me. I'm richer and thinner." Thick, sweaty fingers grabbed the silk of my neckline. Riiip. Fabric tore. I thrashed wildly, my heels kicking against shins.
I fought with every ounce of adrenaline in my veins. The entire room laughed at my desperate struggle.
I burned every single face into my retinas. "You want a show?" I hissed through my teeth. "I'll personally make sure every last one of you becomes the punchline." My eyes locked onto Chloe. "Especially you." Chloe spat directly at my feet. "Tear her dress off.
Time is up, we are done stalling—" Before she could finish, the heavy mahogany doors violently blew open as an army of elite private security flooded the dining room.
Moving like lethal shadows, they systematically swept the legs of Julian's bodyguards, slamming them facefirst into the marble in mere seconds.
Then, stepping smoothly through the chaos, she finally arrived—Constance, the most feared financial titan on Wall Street.
She strode forward, her face carved from ice, gripping a sleek titanium briefcase. "Miss Elara." Constance's authoritative voice sliced through the dead silence. "I brought the cash.
I trust I'm not late?" Julian shot up from his chair. Chloe's jaw hit the floor.
Confusion and pure shock ripped through the crowd. "Constance?" Julian choked out, the color completely draining from his face. "What are you doing here?" "You're a titan," Chloe stammered, frantically rubbing her eyes like she was hallucinating. "How the hell did a broke nobody summon you?" She rubbed her eyes again.
The reality refused to change. "Is that… is that actually Constance?" Chapter 6 Constance didn't spare a single glance at Julian or Chloe.
She bypassed them, striding directly toward me, her posture radiating undeniable respect. "Miss Elara, Lachlan asked me to secure the perimeter," Constance announced, her voice echoing off the marble. "He is en route right now." Her eyes swept over my torn, winestained silk dress.
The professional mask slipped.
She whipped her head around, aiming a lethal glare at the crowd. "Who gave you the audacity to disrespect Miss Elara?" Instantly, the rowdy dining room plunged into a suffocating, dead silence.
If Julian's family sat at the absolute top of the Manhattan food chain, Constance's underground network and ruthless capital could easily trigger their extinction event.
When Julian first dominated the Forbes list, Wall Street whispered. Nobody guessed the invisible hand guiding him was the very "trophy wife" they were currently mocking.
I did it all for one single sentence Julian whispered to me years ago: I'm going to conquer this city, just so you never have to look at a price tag again. Everything changed.
I built his throne, and I could kick the legs right out from under it. Under Constance's icy wrath, the vultures choked on their own breath.
They traded terrified, wideeyed glances. All the color drained from Chloe's face.
Her heavily glossed lips trembled violently. "Did… did Elara actually get someone to bring the cash?" Our brutal bet still stood.
If my tab cleared, she had to bite raw meat and bark her way out the front door. "No, this is literally impossible," Chloe stammered, frantically clutching her chest. "How could a titan like Constance associate with that useless bitch?" Nobody answered her.
The entire room just stared.
Constance locked onto Chloe. "Did you order these men to put their hands on Miss Elara?" The concentrated violence in Constance's voice shattered Chloe's bravado.
Her knees buckled instantly. Julian caught her waist, hauling her upright. "What are you terrified of?
I'm standing right here." Shielded by Julian's custom Tom Ford suit, the panic in Chloe's chest finally subsided. She convinced herself that Julian owned this city.
She could fear Constance, but Julian definitely didn't. Bolstered by that massive delusion, Chloe straightened her spine and smirked.
Julian glared at me, adjusting his cuffs. "I don't know what kind of scam you're running with Constance. But I'll make this perfectly clear to both of you.
In Manhattan, my family calls the shots." He shifted his arrogant stare back to Constance. "And a word of advice for you. This is a private family matter.
Stay the hell out of my territory.
I crushed you to take the number one spot years ago," Julian sneered. "I can easily exile you from this city completely—" Constance let out a dark, booming laugh. "Huge ego for a man running a glass house, Julian.
If it wasn't for Miss Elara pulling the strings behind the curtain, the real predators would have swallowed your pathetic little company whole." She tapped the titanium briefcase. "Your entire empire exists purely because she handed it to you.
And you're too blindly arrogant to even realize who holds your leash." Julian scoffed loudly. He didn't buy a single word. Chapter 7 A dull ache throbbed behind my temples.
The adrenaline crash hit hard. I was done entertaining this circus. In a matter of minutes, I would trigger the financial nuke on Julian’s empire.
He was about to learn the catastrophic, unpayable cost of crossing Elara. "The tab is cleared," my voice sliced cleanly through the tension. "But Chloe made a very specific promise.
Does everyone remember?" The room visibly buzzed. These Wall Street sharks smelled blood in the water.
They knew a cue when they heard one, ready to push the chaos right to the boiling point. "Hold your bets, boys.
We don't know who holds the actual trump card here." "Damn straight." "The market's been a bloodbath all week. I’m not missing free entertainment like this." Chloe snapped.
She shoved past Julian, jabbing a trembling, manicured finger inches from my face. "You delusional bitch!
Don't push your luck." She planted her heels into the marble. "So what if I said it? What the hell are you going to do? Julian owns this room.
You think you can use Constance to force my hand? Watch me walk out of here. You can't do a damn thing." Julian’s chest rumbled with a low, amused laugh.
He reached out, gently cupping Chloe's cheek, thumbing her jawline like she was his most prized possession. He fed on her toxic, spoiled brat energy.
The absolute irony of it turned my blood to ice.
When the massive short squeeze hit his family's stock portfolio in about ten minutes, I severely doubted he'd still be in the mood to stroke her face.
Constance’s sharp brow twitched. She shot a micronod to the closest tactical operator. The operative moved like a blur.
He delivered a swift strike, sending Chloe crashing to the floor right in front of me. Her knees smashed into the marble. She sprawled out on all fours.
A perfect, pathetic little lapdog. "You made the wager," the operative barked, his voice utterly devoid of mercy. "Miss Elara collected.
Bite the raw meat and crawl." Another operative dropped a silver platter directly under Chloe's nose. A massive slab of bloody, unseared Wagyu rested on it.
The heavy, metallic stench of raw blood wafted up. Chloe’s stomach violently heaved.
She dryheaved onto the floor. "Julian!" she shrieked, her voice cracking in pure terror. "Save me! I am not biting that!
I won't do it!" The shrill scream finally cracked Julian's composure. "Get her up! Now!" he roared at his remaining security detail. His suits lunged forward.
It wasn't even a fight. It was a massacre. Constance's private military contractors systematically dismantled Julian's rentacops. Bones snapped.
Heavy bodies slammed against the mahogany walls. Within thirty seconds, Julian’s entire security force lay groaning on the floor. Cold sweat beaded along Chloe's hairline.
The last drop of color drained from her face. Julian’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched. He glared absolute murder at us. "Constance.
I let you breathe in my city, and you try to stage a coup?
I will erase your entire existence from Manhattan by sunrise." He pointed a sharp finger. "Do not declare war on my empire over Elara.
It is financial suicide." Constance didn't even blink at the empty threat.
She pivoted flawlessly, lowering her chin toward me in total submission. "Awaiting your command, Miss Elara." A cold, calculating smile spread across my face.
I locked eyes with Julian. "What's the matter?
You can dish out a public execution, but you can't handle the blowback?" I didn't break eye contact as I issued the final directive. "Constance. Call my legal team.
I want the divorce papers drafted and brought here right now. Tell them to sprint." Chapter 8
