Preview · Chapter 1
The second I stepped through the prison gates, my eyes locked onto my wife's swollen belly. I'd been locked in a cell for three solid years over a financial dispute.
She looked no more than six months along. She forced out a few tears and swore the bastard kicking inside her was mine. She honestly thought I was dumb enough to fail basic math.
I kept a cold smirk on my face and followed her home. The bathroom counter was lined with expensive, customblended men's cologne.
The walkin closet was stuffed with highend tailored suits I could never afford.
Even the smart lock on our master bedroom door had been reprogrammed to recognize someone else's fingerprint. This toxic bitch hadn't just drained every dime of my life savings.
She took out a second mortgage on my house to fund another man's lifestyle. My nails dug deep into my palms. I pulled out my phone and hit record.
It was time to rip their lives to shreds. Chapter 1 She stood outside the prison gates in a black slip dress, her belly pushing prominently against the fabric.
It had been three years. She had lost weight everywhere else, but her stomach had swelled. "Corbin. You're out." Her voice hitched. My eyes locked onto her midsection.
She looked at least five months along. And I had just finished serving three straight years in a cell. "Whose is it?" I asked.
All the color drained from Elara's face. "It's yours." A harsh scoff tore from my throat. "I've been locked up for thirtysix months. That thing inside you is five months old, max.
Do you really think I'm that fucking stupid?" She sank her teeth into her bottom lip and stayed silent. The sun glaring off the asphalt stung my eyes.
I squinted at the woman I used to love. Three years ago, I went down for a financial dispute. Right before they took me away, she sobbed and swore she'd wait for me.
Clearly, she did wait. She just decided to incubate some other bastard's spawn while she was at it. "Corbin, let's just go home.
We can talk about everything at home," she pleaded. "Home?" A cold smile stretched across my face. "Are you sure it's even my house anymore?" Elara's breath hitched, her pupils dilating as she stared at the empty air.
I dug out my phone. After three years in lockup, it barely held a charge, but I managed to hail a ride.
Inside the Uber, Elara sat stiffly beside me, her eyes darting toward me every few seconds. "Corbin, do you hate me?" I turned to face her deadon. "Hate you for what?
Letting some other guy into my bed, or letting him knock you up?" Her eyes rimmed with red. "It's not what you think." "Then what is it?" Inside the elevator, she kept rubbing her hands together, her knuckles turning white.
I stood directly across from her, my gaze dropping to her stomach. From this angle, she was at least six months along. The doors chimed open on the eighteenth floor.
I pulled out my old keys to unlock the front door, only to find the entire deadbolt mechanism had been swapped out.
I held my palm out. "Keys." She dropped a new brass key into my hand. Her hands trembled so hard the metal rattled against the deadbolt. The door clicked open.
The furniture was exactly where I left it, but the space was hijacked by baby gear.
A crib, sterilized bottles, and stacks of tiny clothes were perfectly arranged in the corner of the living room. "You've been busy nesting." I dropped onto the sofa, staring at the setup.
Elara lingered in the doorway, her feet rooted to the floor. "Corbin, I know this is a lot to process, but…" "But what?" I cut her off. "But you're already deeply in love with the baby daddy?" Her head snapped up, her eyes wide with sheer terror.
I stood up, walked over to the crib, and picked up a tiny onesie. It was a limitededition Gucci piece from the current season.
The price on the dangling tag was worth months of my salary from before I went away. "A girl?" "Yeah," she muttered.
I dropped the designer onesie back into the crib and turned to face her. "Who is he?" Elara bit down on her lip, suffocating the silence. "Don't bother.
I'll figure it out myself." I bypassed her and headed for the master suite. "I'm taking a shower." The bedroom had been invaded, too. The nightstand was cluttered with men's items.
A highend razor, expensive cologne, a heavy luxury watch. None of them belonged to me. Chapter 2 I picked up the watch on the nightstand. A heavy, solid gold Rolex.
Clearly, the guy had deep pockets. I stepped into the bathroom. The shelf was stocked with a new brand of body wash—a premium men's line. A harsh laugh scraped my throat.
This bastard wasn't just sleeping with my wife; he had moved right in and marked his territory. I stepped out of the shower and pulled my clothes back on.
Elara was still hovering in the living room like a ghost. "Are you hungry?
I can make dinner," she offered, her voice tight. "Don't bother." I grabbed my jacket. "I'm heading out." "Where are you going?" "To see an old friend." I needed to see Julian.
My best buddy, and the only guy who bothered to visit me while I was locked in a cage. He ran a highend law firm downtown that pulled in serious billable hours.
I took a cab to his building.
The receptionist at the front desk blinked in surprise when I walked in. "Can I help you find someone?" "Julian." "Do you have an appointment?" "Tell him Corbin is here." She picked up the phone, murmured a few words, and set the receiver down. "Mr.
Julian said to go right up. Thirtysecond floor." I stepped into the elevator and caught my reflection in the polished mirrored doors.
Three years of prison food had stripped the fat off my bones, leaving behind sharp angles, but my eyes were dead steady.
Julian's corner office was massive, wrapped in floortoceiling glass.
He was standing by the window waiting for me. "Corbin!" He spun around, a massive grin splitting his face. "You're out!" He crossed the room and pulled me into a hard brohug before pointing to a leather armchair. "How are you holding up?
Health holding out?" "I'm surviving." I gave a curt nod and sat down. "Julian, I need some answers." "Shoot." "Elara's pregnant. Did you know?" Julian's expression shattered.
He broke eye contact and stared at his mahogany desk. "Look… I…" "You knew." I kept my voice deadpan. "And you know exactly whose it is." Julian let out a heavy sigh, running a hand over his face. "Corbin, there's some shit I wasn't sure I should ever tell you." "Spit it out.
I can handle it." "The father is Channing." My jaw locked. "Channing from the Sterling Group?" "Yeah." Channing. The heir to the Sterling megacorporation.
Filthy rich, deeply connected, and untouchable. I had crossed paths with him a few times before my sentence.
A textbook trustfund prick. "When did it start?" I asked. "About six months after you went in," Julian said grimly. "Channing chased Elara relentlessly.
She pushed him away at first, but then…" "Then she caved and spread her legs," I finished for him. "Corbin, I know you want to murder the guy, but the damage is done." My pulse didn't even spike.
I just leaned back in the chair. "What else do you know?" Julian hesitated for a second, then slid a thick stack of asset records across the desk. "Channing bought Elara a massive penthouse in a luxury highrise right in the middle of downtown, plus a Porsche Panamera.
Even the security detail they use to get in and out is toptier." "What else?" "When Elara got knocked up, Channing demanded she get an abortion. She refused.
They had a few explosive blowouts over it." A cold smirk pulled at the corner of my mouth. "Looks like that little bastard in her belly is her golden ticket." Julian stared at me, his brows pulled together. "Corbin, what's your next move?" "I'm going to watch the board for a minute." I stood up and buttoned my jacket. "Thanks for the intel." "Corbin, if you need anything—legal, offthebooks, whatever—just say the word." I gave him a nod and walked out of the law firm.
Chapter 3 When I got back to the apartment, Elara was moving around the kitchen. She had changed into a loose silk robe, her silhouette still just as striking from behind.
She caught the sound of my footsteps and glanced over her shoulder. "You're back. Dinner is almost ready." I sat at the dining table and watched her work.
Three years ago, she used to bustle around this exact kitchen for me. We were barely a year into our marriage back then, and she was constantly trying out new ways to keep me happy.
Now, she was carrying another man's bastard while plateprepping my dinner. The irony tasted like ash. She pulled a thick, welldone steak out of an embossed takeout box.
I recognized the gold logo instantly.
It was delivery from that Michelinstarred steakhouse downtown—the exact place I could never afford to take her to before I went away. "Try it." Elara sat across from me, her fingers nervously twisting her napkin. "I wanted to make sure you got exactly what you like." I cut off a piece of the meat and took a bite.
The expensive seasoning coated my tongue. "Not bad." Elara's shoulders dropped in relief. "How did you eat over the last three years… inside?" "I kept my stomach full." She sank her teeth into her bottom lip. "Corbin, I want to explain about the baby." I dropped my fork onto the plate.
The metal clattered against the ceramic. "Talk." "The baby isn't yours.
But when I got pregnant… I really thought we were never going to see each other again." "Why is that?" "Because…" She hesitated, her breathing shallow. "Because Channing told me he could make sure you never got out." My eyes narrowed. "He threatened you?" "It wasn't a threat.
It was a promise." Tears spilled over her lower lashes and tracked down her cheeks. "He swore that if I didn't agree to be with him, he'd pull the right strings and let you rot in that cell forever." "So you spread your legs to save me?" "I didn't have a choice!" The pitch of her voice shattered, shrill and defensive. "You know how much power the Sterling family holds!
Crushing a guy like you is nothing to them!" I stared at her across the table. Not a single muscle in my chest tightened.
My pulse didn't even shift. "And now?" I asked flatly. "I'm out.
What's your play?" Elara fiercely wiped at her wet cheeks. "I want to start over with you." "With another man's bastard?" "I can give the baby up for adoption, or…" The words died in her throat.
A harsh laugh ripped out of me. "Or what? Get rid of it? You're six months deep.
Are you really going to scoop it out now?" Her sobbing turned violent, her chest heaving. "Corbin, my hands were tied!
I honestly thought you were—" "Thought I was buried, so you hopped into bed with a billionaire sugar daddy?" She clamped her mouth shut and just kept crying.
I picked my fork back up and finished my steak, completely tuning out her gasping breaths.
When the plate was clean, I stacked the dishes and carried them to the sink. "I'm taking the study tonight," I stated. "Corbin…" "I need time to process." Later that night, I lay flat on the leather sofa in the study, staring up at the dark ceiling.
The muffled sound of Elara's crying bled through the thin drywall from the master bedroom. She sobbed for hours, only choking into silence around midnight.
I didn't feel a single shred of pity. The next morning, a sharp ringtone dragged me awake. Elara had answered her phone in the living room.
Her voice was dropped to a frantic whisper.
I rolled off the couch and stepped quietly to the cracked door. "I know, I'll handle it…" she was saying. "No, he won't find out… Okay, I'll wait for your text." The line clicked dead.
I could hear her pacing manic circles across the hardwood floor. I pushed the door wide open. She instantly froze in her tracks. "Who was on the phone?" "N—nothing.
Just a spam caller." A forced, plastic smile stretched across her face.
I walked right past her toward the bathroom. "I'm heading out." "Where to?" "Job hunting." Chapter 4 After splashing some cold water on my face, I threw on my only decent suit and headed for the door.
Elara was standing at the kitchen island, plating breakfast. "Corbin, you don't need to rush into job hunting.
We aren't exactly hurting for cash right now." I stopped dead in my tracks and locked eyes with her. "You mean you want me to live off Channing's allowance?" All the blood drained from her face. "That's not what I meant." "Then what did you mean?" She stammered, choking on her own words.
I let out a cold scoff and walked out the door. Walking through the groundlevel parking garage, a sleek Mercedes SClass caught my eye. The license plate felt too familiar.
I pulled out my phone, snapped a quick picture, and hailed a cab.
Once I hit downtown, I pulled out my phone and logged into an encrypted darkweb network I still had access to from my old security contractor days. I punched in the plates.
Within seconds, Channing's background file, his asset distribution, and his exact GPS driving route from last night flooded my screen. He was here last night.
I scrolled through his profile. Twentyeight years old, Vice President of the Sterling Group. A textbook trustfund baby.
The guy in the corporate headshot was decently looking, but his eyes were dead and predatory.
After pulling the intel, I hit the pavement and dropped off resumes at a few corporate offices.
Getting hired as a felon wasn't a walk in the park, but with my degree and my prior work experience, some places were still willing to roll the dice.
By late afternoon, a trading firm called and scheduled an interview for tomorrow morning. I grabbed a bag of groceries on the way back to the apartment.
When I unlocked the front door, the place was empty. Her purse and keys were gone. I dropped onto the living room sofa and scanned the space.
It was the same apartment, but it felt completely alien. Our massive wedding portrait was still hanging on the wall. The Elara in the picture was beaming.
I remembered her looking me dead in the eye and swearing she'd grow old with me. The memory felt like a sick joke now. At seven, the front door clicked open.
Elara walked in carrying several highend shopping bags, a light bounce in her step. "What did you get?" I asked. "Clothes for the baby." She pulled out several tiny outfits from the tissue paper.
All pink. "You went to the doctor today?" "Yeah, an ultrasound." She nodded. "The doctor said the baby is perfectly healthy." I stared at the tiny clothes.
The kid wasn't mine, but it was growing inside the woman I used to love. "Corbin, what are you thinking about?" "Nothing." I stood up. "I'll start dinner." "No, let me." "You're pregnant.
Sit down." Elara stared at me, her eyes widening in shock. "You're… you're not mad anymore?" "When did I ever say I was mad?" She sank her teeth into her lip. "Does that mean… you can accept this baby?" I turned to face her. "I never said I accepted it, and I never said I didn't." "Then what are you saying?" "I'm saying, let's just get through the delivery first." A spark of desperate hope flared in her eyes. "Really?" I didn't answer.
I just turned my back and walked straight into the kitchen. While I was chopping vegetables, my phone buzzed on the counter.
It was Julian. "Corbin, I got word that Channing is asking around about you." "Is he?" I kept the knife moving steadily across the cutting board. "What's his play?" "I don't know, but watch your back.
The Sterling family has massive reach. They have a hundred different ways to make a guy disappear." "Got it." I hit end on the screen and kept cooking.
Chapter 5 At dinner, Elara ate like she was starving, clearing her plate twice over. "When's the due date?" I asked. "Three months." "Picked out a name yet?" She froze, her fork hovering over her food. "Not yet.
Do you have any ideas?" "I'm not the one who knocked you up.
Why would I name it?" Her jaw locked. "Corbin, what is that supposed to mean?" "Exactly what it sounds like." I kept eating, not missing a beat. "Channing is the father.
You should be asking him." "I cut ties with him!" Her voice spiked, bordering on a screech. "All I want is to build a life with you now!" I looked up, locking eyes with her. "Cut ties?
Then what the hell was his Mercedes doing parked downstairs last night?" Elara went dead pale. "How… how do you know?" "I have a photographic memory for license plates." Her mouth opened and closed, but not a single sound came out. "I'm not a fucking idiot, Elara." I dropped my fork onto the plate.
The metal clanged sharply against the ceramic. "Whatever game you're trying to play, you better think it through." I stood up and walked straight to the study.
The interview the next morning was a breeze. They hired me on the spot for a sales rep position. Base salary plus commission.
It wasn't a fortune, but it was enough to keep a roof over my head.
That afternoon, I grabbed a black coffee at a cafe near the office and sat by the window, mapping out my next move. Right on cue, a familiar figure strode past the glass. Channing.
He was dripping in a bespoke suit, every hair slicked perfectly into place, flanked by two massive guys built like brick walls. I dumped my coffee and tailed him outside.
He walked into an exclusive, highend restaurant, slipping into a private VIP room with a few suits.
I leaned against the brick wall outside and waited an hour before he finally stepped back out onto the pavement. "Channing." I called out. He turned.
For a fraction of a second, his eyes widened, but it quickly morphed into a slick, calculated smirk. "Corbin. Look who's off the leash." "Yeah.
I'm out." I closed the distance between us. "We need to talk." "About what?" "About Elara.
And the bastard growing inside her." One of the bodyguards lunged forward, but Channing held up a manicured hand, stopping the muscle in his tracks. "Sure.
Let's find a place to chat." He signaled his bodyguards, and with pure, unchecked arrogance, he led me into a highend private cigar club down the block—a velvetroped fortress strictly reserved for members with ninefigure bank accounts. "So, what's on your mind?" Channing leaned back into the plush leather sofa, radiating untouchable ease. "Elara told me you threatened her.
Said you'd make sure I rotted in that cell forever if she didn't spread her legs for you." A harsh laugh erupted from Channing's chest. "She actually had the balls to say that?" "You're saying it's bullshit?" "Total bullshit." He shook his head slowly. "I went after Elara, sure.
But I never had to threaten her." "Then why would she feed me that story?" "What do you think?" Channing shot back, his eyes gleaming with mockery. "When a woman stabs her husband in the back, do you really expect her to admit she just wanted to screw a guy with a bigger bank account?" I locked onto his dead eyes. "Then you tell me.
What exactly happened." Chapter 6 Channing clipped the end off an expensive Cohiba cigar and exhaled a thick cloud of smoke, looking at me like I was trash on his shoe. "Six months after you went in, your wife walked right up to me at a yacht party with a glass of champagne.
She said playing the lonely widow was getting too boring." "And then?" "Then I went for it." Channing stated it like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "A beautiful woman practically throws herself at me.
Why would I say no?" "Threw herself at you?" "Yeah.
She wore a dress that left nothing to the imagination and asked for my number." Channing tapped his ash into a crystal tray. "Corbin, your wife isn't exactly a saint." My knuckles cracked as my hands balled into tight fists. "When did it start?" "I had her in my bed by the second date." Channing didn't even try to hide his amusement. "She was a lot more eager than I expected." I dragged in a harsh breath. "And the baby?" "An accident." Channing spread his hands. "I told her to get rid of it.
She refused. She insisted on keeping it." "Why?" "She said she needed an insurance policy." Channing scoffed. "Smart girl.
She knows a kid is her biggest bargaining chip." A cold block of ice dropped into my stomach. Elara had calculated every single move from day one. "And now?
Are you two still together?" "Of course." Channing shrugged. "I bought the penthouse she lives in.
I bought the car she drives." "She told me you two cut ties." Channing burst into laughter. "Corbin, you're painfully naive.
You actually believe a word that comes out of a woman's mouth?" I stood up. "Thanks for the intel." "Anytime." Channing stood up with me. "But consider this a warning.
Stay the hell away from Elara." "Why?" "Because she's my woman now, and that's my kid." Channing's voice dropped, turning icecold. "I don't like people interfering with my property." "And if I don't leave?" Channing smiled, the expression dead and predatory. "Then I'll just have to put you back in a cage for a few more years." I stared right into his eyes. "I'm not the same Corbin from three years ago, Channing." "Sure." Channing brushed me off. "We'll see about that." After leaving the club, I walked the city blocks for a long time.
Channing's words echoed relentlessly in my skull. Elara. The woman I loved had been playing me from the very beginning. She was never threatened.
Every single betrayal was her own calculated choice.
I pulled out my phone and dialed Julian. "Julian, I need you to run a background check on someone." "Who?" "Elara." "Why?" "I need to know exactly what she's been up to for the last three years.
Every single detail." "Got it. Give me a few days." I ended the call and headed back to the apartment. I needed hard evidence. I needed to know exactly how deep Elara's lies went.
When I walked through the front door, Elara was on the couch watching TV. The second she saw me, she grabbed the remote and hit the power button. "You're back.
How did the job hunt go?" "Fine." I dropped onto the sofa. "I start tomorrow." "That's amazing." Her face lit up with a bright, flawless smile. "We can finally start over." I stared at her face, searching for a single muscle twitch of guilt or panic.
There was nothing. Her mask was perfect, as if she hadn't destroyed my life at all.
Chapter 7 "Elara, let me ask you something." "What is it?" "If Channing gave you an ultimatum right now—walk away with him, or stay here with me—what's your move?" Elara froze for a fraction of a second before her eyes locked onto mine. "Stay here with you, of course." "Really?" "Absolutely." She reached across the cushions and gripped my hand. "Corbin, you're the only man I've ever loved.
That has never changed." I just smiled, letting the lie hang in the air. I could wait to pull the trigger. The new job kept me running from the second I clocked in the next morning.
Stepping out of that apartment—and away from her toxic web of lies—felt like I could finally breathe again. On my lunch break, my phone buzzed with an encrypted file from Julian.
It was the full background check on Elara's last three years. The dossier was massive. It took me a full hour to read through the PDF.
When I hit the last page, my grip tightened on the phone until the glass screen protector cracked under the pressure.
It turned out Elara's last three years were far more colorful than I could have ever imagined. She wasn't just taking Channing's money.
She was secretly booking fivestar hotel rooms with her private Pilates instructor, and to secure a promotion at work, she had spread her legs for her company's overweight, balding VP.
And she had started screwing that fitness instructor during my second month in lockup—four full months before her supposed "loneliness" kicked in.
But the detail that made my vision swim with red? She brought one of them back to our apartment. They did it right on our marital bed.
I dragged in a jagged breath, forcing the violent adrenaline spike back down. I burned half a day of PTO that afternoon and took a cab straight to Chase Bank.
Before I went away, I transferred every dime of my life savings into Elara's name for safekeeping. It was time to see the damage.
The teller stared at the screen and read the balance. Three hundred dollars. My account used to sit at over thirty grand. Now, it was stripped down to almost nothing.
I demanded a printout of the transaction history. The money had been siphoned off in massive wire transfers, the final one clearing six months ago.
Every single transfer went to a separate account under Elara's name. From the bank, I walked directly to the county records office to pull the deed on the apartment.
The property was still in my name, but it had a massive lien slapped onto it. A second mortgage for eighty grand. And Elara had cashed out every cent of that equity, too.
I sat on the concrete steps outside the records building, a cold, venomous fury pooling in my gut. This toxic parasite didn't just spread her legs for other men.
She torched my savings, mortgaged my house, and spent every single day looking me in the eye, pretending she was the perfect, loving wife.
I pulled out my phone and dialed her number. "Corbin?
Why are you calling in the middle of the day?" "I need to know exactly how much cash is left in the joint account." Dead silence hung on the line for three long seconds. "Corbin… why are you asking about that?" "My phone is barely holding a charge.
I need to buy a new one." "Oh.
Just wait until you get home tonight, I'll pull out some cash for you." "I asked what the balance is." Another suffocating silence. "Not… not a lot." "Give me a number." "Maybe… maybe a few thousand?" A harsh laugh tore from my throat. "A few thousand?
Elara, do you even rehearse your lies anymore?" "Corbin, what does that mean?" "I just walked out of Chase Bank.
The balance is three hundred dollars." Her breath hitched, the words stumbling out in a rushed whisper. "Corbin, please, just listen to me
