"You're doing this because I went to her grand rounds instead of your graduation?" I nodded. Then I broke up with the man I'd loved for thirteen years.
The talk his brother's fiancée gave. The first surgery she ran. The cat she lost. Every year, the list of people who came before me got longer. I never made the top of it.
Not once. "You really are never going to grow up." He let out a short laugh. "Have it your way.
Just don't come crawling back later." I'd been chasing Julian Kingsley since I was twelve. Everyone I knew was sure I'd fall apart without him.
I was twelve when he pulled me out of an alley. Everyone decided I'd be paying that back for the rest of my life. Including me. But I was tired. This time I was really tired.
The engagement party was twentythree days out. I wasn't going to the dress fitting. I'd already booked the flight. Somewhere far. A whole different country far.
Nobody left to stop him from dropping everything for her. He probably thought this was one more round of the same fight. Every other time, I was the one who caved first.
This time, there was one thing I hadn't told him. Chapter 1 "I was at Roz's grand rounds," Julian said. Flat. Like that settled it. Rosalind Vance had been engaged to his brother.
After Declan's plane went down, the Kingsleys started calling her family, and the rest of us were expected to do the same. She waved it off once. "We're all the same age here.
Stop with the sisterinlaw thing. You're aging me." So Julian started calling her Roz. He got comfortable with it fast. "I know," I said.
I was chewing the inside of my lip. "You know and you're still mad?" He sounded tired of me. "Can we skip the tantrum?" "Julian." I pressed my fingers together and made myself look at him. "I want to break up." He leaned back in his office chair and raised his eyes. "Over one graduation?" I nodded.
I didn't say anything else. "You're serious," he said. "Yes." "Quinn." "Yes." "I don't have the patience for this onagain, offagain game.
Adults think before they talk." "Yes." "You really are never going to grow up." A short laugh. "Have it your way. Just don't come crawling back later." I nodded. "Don't worry.
I won't." I turned to go and almost walked into Rosalind coming through the door. "Jules, want to grab lunch? I had a question about…" She saw me and stopped. "Quinnie.
What are you doing here?" She looked at him. Then at me. Then back at him. "Did you two fight?" "Is this about him missing your graduation?" she asked me.
Then, fast: "Quinnie, don't take it the wrong way. "That was my first grand rounds.
It mattered so much to me, so I asked him to stay and check my slides. "I had no idea it would run that long, or that he would miss your ceremony.
I'm so sorry." There was nothing in any of it you could argue with. Which made me the child in the room. That was the part I hated most.
When I didn't answer, she came over and hooked her arm through mine. "Come on. Eat with us." Then she turned on Julian. "Girlfriend's here, so no cafeteria today. Sushi.
It's been forever. You're buying." She covered her mouth and laughed. "Listen to me.
You always buy." She looked at me. "Quinnie, Jules said you like Japanese too, right?" I stopped where I stood. I do like Japanese food. He had never once said that to me.
I looked at Julian and said it slowly, one word at a time. "Do I? News to me." Rosalind's eyebrows drew together. For half a second her face emptied out.
Then it filled back in. "Then I'm remembering it wrong. Doesn't matter. Order whatever you want. Don't be shy." Julian didn't see it. Thirteen years, and I don't think he ever has.
She had turned me into an outsider in my own life. He didn't notice anything off either. He stood and took his time pulling off his white coat. "Let's go.
Sushi." I pulled my arm out of hers. "You two go," I said. "I'm going home." At the door I looked back one last time. He wasn't looking at me.
He was waiting for Rosalind to gather her things. Thirteen years, and I finally understood it. It wasn't that he didn't know how to be gentle with a person.
It just never occurred to him to spend any of it on me. Chapter 2 Then I ran. On my way out I heard him, calm as anything. "Ignore her. She's a kid.
She needs to learn the hard way." That night Rosalind's Instagram came up on my feed. A photo of Julian with his head down, listening to her talk.
Rosalind: [Don't know what I'd do without you.] A minute later, a plate of sushi. Rosalind: [Thank you for still remembering what I like.] He remembered what she liked.
Whether I liked Japanese food, he had to hear from somebody else. I threw my phone across the bed. I lay there holding a pillow and didn't sleep. Not one hour of it.
The next morning she posted again. Julian, asleep. Rosalind: [Long night. My man earned it.] Not one mutual friend liked it. Which told me exactly who it was for.
It sat in my throat and wouldn't go down. A while later Julian texted. Julian: [My mom wants you at the dress fitting for the engagement party.
Twentythree days out.] Julian: [Roz has a case today. Her first one as primary. I need to be in the room with her, so I'll skip it.] I blocked him. First time in thirteen years.
Then I sat there holding my phone. Waiting. Waiting for one line. What are you doing. The sun came up. Nothing came in. He hadn't even noticed. I went down for breakfast.
Mom had just gotten off the phone with Eleanor. She waved me over, all smiles. Eleanor had taken the whole day off to come to the fitting with me. Mom had called out of work too.
She was coming. She kept going. "I liked that boy when he was ten years old. I knew what I was looking at. Look how he turned out.
Quinnie, you marry him, you've hit the jackpot." I bit down on my lip and made myself say it. "Mom, we broke up.
So the engagement is off." Her face changed. "You call off an engagement and you don't tell me first?
You think this is some game you kids play in the yard?" My hands shook. "I thought Julian told you." "That man is buried in work and he still has to play along with your little stunts.
What he puts up with. Why can you never learn to grow up?" The tears came before I could stop them. "Right. I never grew up. Nobody ever taught me how.
Where was I supposed to learn it?" Dad had been quiet the whole time. Then he set down his cup. "So it's off.
It's not the end of the world." He looked at me. "You're not taking the job at his hospital?" "No," I said. "Dad, I want to go study abroad." Mom's mouth opened.
Dad gave her one look and she closed it. "Then go. All these years, and this is the first time you've decided anything for yourself. Good. "Don't worry about the engagement.
I'll make the calls." My phone buzzed while he was still talking. Harper. Harper: [Quinnie, my brother's heart is acting up again.
We're in the ER at Kingsley Memorial.] Harper: [They say we're waiting on interventional cardiology for a consult. It's been three hours.
Nobody has come.] Harper: [Quinnie, I don't think he can wait that long. Can you get your boyfriend to come look at him? Just look at him.] I called her.
For a few seconds I couldn't get anything out. She apologized before I did. "I'm sorry. Quinnie, I'm sorry, I'm just scared. You told me you hate asking him for things.
Forget I said it. I'll figure something out." I let the breath go. "I'm coming." Ten minutes later I was at Kingsley Memorial. Her brother looked bad.
I asked a nurse why nobody from the interventional cardiology team was on the floor. She lowered her voice. Dr. Kingsley had pulled all of them into the OR.
Rosalind's first case as primary. He wanted it perfect. A resident does not have that kind of pull. Julian does. The Kingsleys control this hospital's board.
I turned and looked at the boy on the ER bed. His lips were starting to turn blue. And the light over the OR door was still on. Chapter 3 I called Julian.
I called him a lot of times. His phone was off every time. So I went and stood outside the OR. I waited a long time. Finally the light over the door shut off. The doors opened.
Julian came out carrying Rosalind. Her head rested on his shoulder. He walked past me. Three steps, four.
Then he remembered to look back. "Why are you here?" I caught his arm. "My friend's brother, he's really sick, they said—" He pulled his arm loose before I finished and kept walking.
I half ran after him, all the way to his office. He laid Rosalind down in the oncall room. Careful about it. Careful with her head.
Then he sat at his computer and stared at the screen. I got in front of him. "Dr. Kingsley. My friend's brother is having a cardiac event. It's critical.
Can you please go look at him?" He raised his eyes. "Why are you still here?
Isn't my mother waiting on you at the fitting?" I said it again. "Can you go look at him?" Julian let out a small breath. "Roz just came out of surgery.
She'll have nightmares if she wakes up alone." Something in my chest curled in on itself. I asked anyway. "Then send one doctor down. One." "No. They stay on their patient.
I don't allow mistakes." "Julian, do you have any professional ethics at all? I told you there is a patient out there. He is critical. You're a doctor.
The least you can do is walk down the hall and look at him." I don't think he expected me to raise my voice at him. His eyebrows pulled together. "Quinn.
How many times have I told you. In this job, the worst thing you can carry is empathy. However sick the patient is, it goes through the process. When it's my turn to go, I'll go.
On time." My voice dropped. "Harper is the only friend I have left.
I'm begging you." A short laugh. "Didn't you tell me yesterday you'd never beg me again?" "Last time." The tears came and I couldn't stop them. Something moved in his face.
Then, from the next room: "Jules? Are you there? I'm scared." Julian stood up.
When he spoke again there was nothing in it. "If he can't wait, transfer him." Out in the hallway it landed on me. I might not even have my one friend anymore.
I signed the transfer paperwork for Harper's brother. Then I walked. I don't know how long. At some point I looked up and I was standing in that alley.
I was twelve when my birth parents found me. The Suttons. It came through a DNA match. Life did not get better. Every one of them was embarrassed by me.
They had taken in a daughter while I was gone, and she was sure I'd come back to take everything that was hers. So she made me pay for it. At school she led it.
I didn't dare tell my parents. I took it. So she got bolder. One day after school she brought a group of guys from off campus and cornered me in that alley.
They tore my clothes apart. And Julian came out of nowhere and put himself in front of me. He ran them off, pulled off his jacket and wrapped it around me, and walked me home.
All I know is the Sutton house was not quiet that night. The next day I heard my brother and Brianne were both being sent to boarding school in Switzerland.
I said to Julian, half crying, "Thank you for helping me. But now they're only going to hate me more." He said it like it was simple. "Then get good.
Who doesn't want a kid worth bragging about?" "But I'm stupid." He raised an eyebrow at me. "I'm smart.
Want me to tutor you?" He was seventeen that year, and he stood down an entire alley for me. Today he's thirty, and he shut me out of an OR.
The part I have never worked out is this. When did that person disappear? Or was he never standing there at all? Chapter 4 Julian has been cold since he was a kid.
But when he tutored me, he had no patience at all. I felt bad about it. "See, I told you I'm stupid.
Let's just stop." He wouldn't hear it. "I refuse to believe somebody as smart as me can't teach one student." He made the sessions longer.
We sat there together until late, most nights. My grades climbed. Really climbed. And my parents did start liking me more.
Somewhere in all those evenings, the thing between us shifted. Both families were glad to help it along. Without either of us deciding anything, we were together.
At school he was too bright to stand next to. I had to work to keep up. He would tell me not to worry. "Relax.
I'll always be a step ahead of you, clearing the path." He was cold by nature.
He couldn't say sweet things, and he never once understood how hard I worked just to deserve standing next to him. But I got to be around him every day, and that was enough for me.
Julian is five years older. He was already too far ahead in school, skipped two grades, and started at the best university in the city at sixteen on a full ride.
Once he got into med school, the tutoring got rarer and rarer. So I pushed harder, because I wanted to get into his school. Then came my first year there.
Julian's brother turned up at the Kingsley house with Rosalind. "Jules. My girlfriend. She just started at your school.
Look out for her." Not long after that, Declan's plane went down on a Navy training flight.
The Kingsleys took the one girl Declan had ever brought home and treated her like a daughterinlaw. She lived in their house.
She got the best of everything, and her whole future arranged for her. And that was the end of the life Julian and I had.
Rosalind would appear while Julian was going over my coursework, smiling that bright smile. "Quinnie, can I borrow your boyfriend?
I have some questions for him." She would call in the middle of our dates. "Jules, my cat is gone. He's the only thing your brother left me.
Can you help me look?" She would show up at my birthday without being invited, get through two or three drinks, and then be too drunk to get herself home.
Every time, she smiled and said she was only borrowing him. Every time, Julian went. And every time, right before he walked her out the door, she would look back at me.
There was nothing drunk in that look. But she did all of it out in the open, generous about it, so there was nowhere to put my anger. Over time, Julian and I fought more and more.
I asked him once, small and careful, swallowing everything else down. "Could you stop putting her first every single time?
I'm the one who's your girlfriend." He said, "Don't be jealous of Roz. She was going to marry my brother.
He asked me over and over, while he was alive, to take care of her." After that we fought constantly. I started saying the word breakup.
And then Rosalind came to lecture me. "Quinnie, don't read into it. Jules is only like this because he's looking after me.
Don't be a little girl about it, throwing the word breakup around. That damages a relationship." I lost it.
Whatever was in my head came out. "If you know it damages our relationship, then why do you keep going to him for everything? He isn't your boyfriend.
Why is he the one out buying your tampons? What is this? You want your dead fiancé's little brother?" Julian shouted at me. "Quinn.
All that school and you still don't know how to talk.
Apologize to Roz." "No." I looked at him and said it one word at a time. "You want me to apologize to her. "In all these years, who ever once apologized to me?" Chapter 5 "Then have it your way.
We're done." And then he didn't speak to me at all. Left me alone, turning over in bed night after night. In the end I was the one who couldn't stand it and crawled back to him.
Over and over, until Julian was certain that whatever he did, I wasn't going anywhere. A month before graduation, I was up all night studying for my last exam.
Then I couldn't pull in a full breath and my head started swimming. My parents were overseas on business again.
I called Julian. "Jules, I don't feel right, can you—" I didn't get to finish. Rosalind was in the background, sweet as anything. "Ugh, I've never seen a case like this.
What do I even do? Jules, this is the patient you assigned me. You have to walk me through the treatment plan today.
I'm not letting you go home." Julian, soft with her. "Okay." Then the line cut. I called back. I couldn't let it go. He killed it. There was nothing else to do, so I called Harper.
Then I lost consciousness. I woke up in a hospital the next day. Harper had texted to say she'd gone to get me breakfast. I got myself up and walked down to Julian's office door.
Rosalind's voice came through it. "Jules, you're up? Call your girlfriend back. You hung up on her last night.
She's going to be furious." Julian said, "I'm not calling." Rosalind, sweeter. "Please? Go smooth it over.
Otherwise she'll blame me again for wrecking things between you." Julian sounded worn out. "She can think whatever she wants
