"He's a tyrant! All I did was bring home a little hamster, and he threw it out, cage and all!" My own daughter, sobbing into the camera, tears pouring down her face.

The spotlight burned into my face. The livestream counter had just cracked two million. I squeezed the USB drive in my pocket. The host swung the camera around to me.

I pushed up my sleeve and showed them the scar raked across the back of my hand. "That wasn't a hamster." I leaned into the mic. "It was a rat.

The kind that climbs up out of the sewer. The kind that bites. I got three rabies shots." The room went dead for three seconds. Then the live chat exploded.

My exwife had been gone twelve years.

Right now she was on the other end of a phone, watching the stream, waiting for our daughter to take me apart and walk away with everything I had.

She had no idea what I was holding. Enough to put her away for three lifetimes. Chapter 1 When the spotlight hit me, I was thinking about the concrete pour at the job site tonight.

My darling daughter had her chin tipped up at a photogenic fortyfive degrees, tears streaming like somebody'd left a tap running. "He's a tyrant!

All I did was get one little hamster, and he came home and threw the cage out!" The host handed her a tissue. The camera shoved in on my face.

I dug a finger in my ear, waited for her to finish crying, then added one thing. "That wasn't a hamster. It was a rat. Came up out of the sewer." Three seconds of dead silence.

Then the live chat blew up. And that was just the appetizer.

My exwife, gone twelve years, was on the other end of the line right now, watching the stream, waiting to walk off with everything I had.

What she didn't know: the USB drive in my pocket could hand her three life sentences. My name's Roy Vance. Fortyfive. I'm in construction. Three hundred guys on my crews.

The company clears thirty million a year. But sitting in this gaudy TV studio, I felt like a length of rebar on my own site: propped up exactly where somebody else wanted me.

Three days ago, my girl Sienna texted me. Dad, come do a show with me Saturday? It's for school. Just a realityshow thing. I believed her.

Fortyfive years on this earth, and I can count the times somebody's fooled me on one hand. This made six. And it was my own kid. I didn't find out until I got there.

The show's called Air Your Grievances. One of those daytime conflictmediation deals. And I was the one on trial. I sat in the chair marked THE ACCUSED.

Across from me sat my daughter, Sienna. Twentytwo, fresh out of college, fivesix, the spitting image of her mother at that age. Pretty. Genuinely pretty. And a drama queen.

Genuinely a drama queen. She had fifteen grievances saved in the Notes app on her phone. Each one nastier than the last.

What she didn't know: every one of those fifteen was about to turn into a nail. And by the end of the night, every last one would drive into the person who'd taught her her lines.

Chapter 2 The host was Renée Marsh. Forties, sharp blazer, wearing that Icompletelyunderstandyou face. She turned to my girl. "Sienna, you can tell us everything.

This is a safe space." I almost laughed. Safe? Eight cameras in the room. The live viewer count had already blown past two million. And she's telling me it's safe.

Sienna sniffled and got into character. "My whole life, my dad's been a control freak." Her eyes went red, her voice all trembly. "I wanted a pet. He said no.

I finally rescued a little hamster and brought it home, and the second he got off work he threw the whole thing in the trash.

Cage and all." A sympathetic murmur rolled through the audience.

Chat: [that's so messed up] Chat: [she just wanted a hamster, damn] Renée turned to me, judgment already loaded in her eyes. "Mr. Vance.

Care to explain?" I took my time straightening up. Reached for the mic. "That wasn't a hamster." "It was a rat." "Came up out of the sewer." "It bit me before I got rid of it.

Three rabies shots." I pushed up my sleeve. The scar on the back of my hand, plain as day. Dead silence. Then somebody in the crowd lost it. One sharp snort of laughter.

Then it spread. The live chat whipped around.

Chat: [I'm dead] Chat: [hamster vs sewer rat is a BIG difference lol] Chat: [girl needs glasses] Sienna went red to the ears. "How was I supposed to know! It was tiny!

And you didn't even explain, you just threw it out!" I nodded. "I did explain. You had your headphones in, blasting music, dancing around the living room.

I called your name six times. You didn't hear a word." The corner of Renée's mouth twitched. She caught it and smoothed her face back over. "Okay. Sienna, go on.

What else?" Sienna pulled in a breath, reset, and switched to the next charge. "He never let me have a social life.

In high school I went out with some friends, and he came storming into the karaoke bar and dragged me out. In front of everyone!" This time the crowd reacted harder.

Chat: [so suffocating] Chat: [this is textbook gaslighting] Chat: [let the girl have friends??] Renée frowned too. "Mr. Vance, don't you think that's a bit much?

A high schooler out with friends is completely normal." I looked at my girl.

Her eyes slid away from mine. "That private karaoke room," I said. "Average age in there was thirtytwo." "Not one of them was her classmate." "The guy who brought her was thirtyfive.

Chatted her up outside her school." "When I walked in, he was handing my kid a drink. Some color I couldn't name." The laughter cut out. All of it. The air went cold.

Renée's face changed. She looked at Sienna, and there was something more complicated in her eyes now. Chapter 3 Sienna panicked. "It wasn't like that!

That guy was really nice—" "He's locked up now." My voice stayed flat. "Luring a minor. Four and a half years.

Want to guess how many priors he had before that?" Sienna shut her mouth. Her face went white for a beat, then flushed red again. She didn't want to lose. Not on this show.

I could see it in her. She gripped the mic, eyes filling again, loading up the next round. Renée could tell the episode wasn't going the way she'd planned.

But the numbers on the ratings panel kept jumping, and she didn't call it. "There's more." Sienna bit her lip, her voice shaking. "I was blowing bubbles in the bathroom with hand soap, and he came home, saw it, and hit me." The audience started buzzing again.

Chat: [hitting a kid is never okay] Chat: [doesn't matter the reason, you don't do that] I sighed. "That wasn't hand soap.

It was toiletbowl cleaner." "Toilet cleaner mixed with bleach." "Mix those two, you get chlorine gas." "Our golden retriever was standing right there.

Took a few breaths of it and went down on the floor, foaming at the mouth. Three days at the vet getting its stomach pumped.

Still walks with a limp to this day." Dead silence first. Then somebody started laughing, and the whole place fell apart.

Chat: [is she on a bomb squad or something] Chat: [did she skip chemistry class] Chat: [the dog: what did I do wrong] Sienna, eyes red, shouted, "I was fourteen!

How was I supposed to know all that chemistry stuff!" "It was on the bottle," I said. "Big letters. DO NOT MIX." That time Renée actually broke.

She turned her head away and coughed twice to cover it. I looked at this girl I'd raised from a baby. Not much anger in me. Just one question. When did she turn into this?

Who put her up to coming here? The answer was already on my tongue. Through my pocket, I touched the USB drive. Not yet. Sienna clearly had more.

She pulled out her phone and opened the Notes app. A whole page, packed tight. I glanced at it. Fifteen entries, at least.

The kid had done her homework to nail me. "Freshman year, I wanted to stay over at my best friend's one night. He said no.

Drove straight to her building and blocked me at the gate." Renée looked at me. "Mr. Vance?" "Your best friend lived in a shared apartment next to a nightclub. Four roommates.

Two of them men. You told me you were sleeping over at a friend's." "It was a normal roommate situation!" Sienna said. "That 'normal' apartment got raided three months later.

Suspected illegal activity. Your best friend got hauled in for questioning too. Want to guess if she's still your best friend?" Sienna went quiet.

Chat: [this dad literally saved her life] Chat: [watching this, my respect for my own dad just shot up 300%] She'd been like this since she was small.

Lose and never admit it, stubborn to the bone. That part she got from me. But Sienna wasn't going to stop.

Chapter 4 "And there's more!" She pushed her voice louder. "On my twentieth birthday, all my friends threw me a party, and he flipped the whole cake over in front of everyone!" That one had teeth.

The audience went quiet. Flipping a kid's birthday cake. That did sound bad. Renée turned to me, serious this time. "Mr.

Vance, surely there's no 'chemical' twist to this one?" I went quiet for three seconds. Not for effect. I was deciding whether to say this on television.

But she wanted to do this in public. So this was on her. "One of the 'friends' she invited that day was planted there by her own mother." The whole room went dead still.

Sienna's face drained white, the mic frozen in her hand. "That person brought her a birthday present," I went on. "A copy of a legal demand letter.

It urged my daughter, as my biological child, to sue me for a share of my assets." "I didn't flip the cake.

I pulled that letter out of a false bottom in the cake box." "The cake was a prop. Stuffed full of documents." The whole room sucked in a breath. Renée sat frozen.

Chat: [oh man, what kind of soap opera is this] Chat: [the exwife is pure poison] Chat: [this girl got used as a pawn and doesn't even know it] Sienna's face changed. Not anger.

Panic. "That wasn't... Mom didn't set that up... my friend brought it herself..." Her voice was shaking. I didn't answer. Some things don't need saying.

The whole audience had started to look again at the girl in the victim's chair. Renée was quiet a few seconds, then looked up at me. "Mr. Vance. You and Sienna's mother.

What happened there?" "Divorced," I said. "Twelve years ago." "Over what?" I looked at Sienna.

She kept her eyes off me. "This part," I said, "I didn't want to bring up on TV." "But my girl dragged me up here.

So maybe it's time she knew the truth." Renée leaned in. "Please." I pulled in a breath. "Her mother cheated on me. With my business partner at the time." "I didn't make a scene.

I'd have walked away with nothing. My one condition was that I kept our kid." "Court agreed. I got custody." "Twelve years. Not one cent of support from her side.

Never showed up once, not on a single holiday." "Until last year." "Last year she suddenly started blowing up my daughter's phone." I paused. "Because that business partner of hers is buried in debt now." The room went dead quiet.

Sienna's hands were shaking. "You're lying!" She shot to her feet, her voice gone shrill. "Mom said you forced her out! You threw her out! She didn't take a thing!" I didn't move.

Just looked at her, calm. "Sienna. What day were you born?" Chapter 5
