Preview · Chapter 1
On the night of our fourth wedding anniversary, my own smart home system locked me out. The heavy front doors slowly glided open.
Carter’s first love stood there, draped in my custom haute couture, the cold weight of my late mother Clara’s necklace resting against her collarbone.
She sneered at me in front of dozens of Manhattan socialites. "Tonight, strictly no dogs allowed.
And definitely no exwives." And Carter—the husband I had loved for four years—rested his hand naturally on her waist.
He flicked a $50,000 check at my feet, dismissing me like a stray. He didn't know the truth. The tech empire he flaunted and the tenmilliondollar penthouse behind him?
I paid for every single inch of it. Chapter 1 It had all started when she secretly wore my custom gown, using it as a prop for her Instagram photos.
I revoked her smart home access on the spot and had security physically throw her out onto the street.
Her carefully curated influencer persona crumbled overnight, turning her into a massive red flag and the laughingstock of our social circle. I thought that was the end of it.
I thought my boundaries were clear. Carter found out. He kissed my forehead, his touch infuriatingly gentle. "I'm so sorry, baby. I handled my past poorly.
I didn't mean to put you through that." After that, he played the perfect husband. He catered to my every whim, terrified I would bring up his first love again.
Until our fourth anniversary. And that brought us to tonight. Standing in front of the heavy double doors...
He invited the Upper East Side elite to our penthouse for a lavish party. Right before the toast, he sent me downstairs, claiming a custom necklace awaited delivery.
I came back emptyhanded. The facial recognition scanner flashed a hostile red. I reached for the keypad. The AI voice echoed through the empty corridor. "Warning.
Blacklisted individual detected." The heavy double doors glided open. Harper stood in the foyer, wearing my silk gown. Her eyes crawled over me with naked disgust. "Astrid.
Carter just transferred master control to me. Tonight, strictly no dogs allowed. And definitely no exwives." The oxygen instantly vanished from the hallway.
Inside, dozens of Manhattan’s wealthiest heirs paused with champagne flutes in hand. Their eyes locked onto me. Standing right at the front was my husband, Carter.
His hand rested firmly on Harper’s waist. A natural, practiced grip. Ice flooded my veins. "Carter… what is this?" My voice fractured.
I couldn't tear my eyes away from his fingers pressing into her silkclad hip. "Is this your big surprise?
Locking me out so your first love can call me a dog?!" My gaze snapped to Harper. My breath hitched. Resting against Harper's chest was the blue diamond pendant. Clara’s necklace.
The only thing my mother left me before she died. "You gave her my mother’s necklace?!" Bile burned the back of my throat.
I stared at him, waiting for the lie, waiting for the apology. Carter’s face remained entirely blank. No panic. No guilt. "Harper suffered overseas for four years.
I owe her this house. I owe her the title of my wife." The air punched out of my lungs. A sharp, physical tear ripped through my chest. Owe her?
I stared at his perfectly sculpted, merciless face. Pieces of the last two weeks violently crashed together in my head. The lingering floral perfume on his dress shirts.
The massive, unexplainable designer charges on our joint black card. He was cheating on me. They had been sleeping together behind my back this entire time.
And I, like a complete fool, thought he was secretly buying me anniversary gifts. Acidic nausea clawed up my throat. "Carter.
You're using my money to fund your little obsession, and now you want to throw me out onto the street?" I choked out, my fists trembling at my sides. "Are you even a fucking man?" "Astrid, stop gaslighting him." Harper deliberately flicked the blue diamond resting on her collarbone.
She let out a breathy, victimized sigh. "I just fell in love with this piece. Carter felt bad for me, so he let me borrow it. As for the penthouse… Carter said he paid for it.
Why are you being so desperate and clinging to something that isn't yours?" "Shut your mouth and give it back!" My vision blurred with pure adrenaline.
My legs moved on their own, lunging straight for her throat. Chapter 2 "Astrid!" Carter yanked Harper behind him, his voice cracking like a whip. "Is she wrong?
I’ve funded your luxury lifestyle for four years. I even bought this tenmilliondollar penthouse and put it in your name!
Now that Harper is back, this place is her compensation." He tilted his head, shooting Evan a sharp look.
A crisp check slid through the crack in the door. "Fifty grand." Carter stared down at me like I was a stray dog. "Take the cash and get out." "Carter is being too generous.
Fifty grand for a barren, washedup ex?" a voice sneered from the crowd. "Exactly. A jobless housewife monopolized him for four years. His true love is back—she needs to pack it up.
She doesn't even compare to Harper. Take the money and get out of here!" The whispers hit like physical slaps. Stinging heat flooded my eyes.
I dug my nails into my palms, forcing the moisture back down. Four years of bleeding myself dry. I had hidden my heiress identity.
I had dragged him from the edge of bankruptcy and crowned him Manhattan’s newest tech darling. I thought I was protecting his fragile ego.
Instead, I fed a parasite. "Carter, have you lied so much you actually believe your own delusions?" I slowly lifted my chin, the edges of my vision burning red. "Did you forget?
Four years ago, when your startup was drowning and you couldn't even make payroll, who injected fifteen million dollars to save you?
And who paid cash for this tenmilliondollar penthouse?!" Carter froze.
Then, a harsh, exaggerated scoff ripped from his throat. "Astrid, you're genuinely psychotic." He tilted his chin up, his features twisting with pure disdain. "That fifteen million came from Zenith Capital, the top VC firm in New York.
They invested in my personal business acumen!
What does that have to do with a woman who only knows how to drain my credit cards?" His chest puffed out. "Are you out of your fucking mind?
Do you actually think a crazy bitch like you is the secret CEO of Zenith Capital?" The penthouse erupted in roaring laughter. "Astrid, this is just sad." Harper peeled herself off Carter’s chest, her eyes dripping with mockery. "Let me spell it out for you.
Carter threw this entire party to welcome the CEO of Zenith Capital! He tricked you into going downstairs just to get rid of you. He wanted to avenge me.
He wanted me standing here as the lady of the house, perfectly positioned to network with the real power player!" The floor dropped out from under me. My knees buckled slightly.
The fourthanniversary surprise I had anticipated all month? It was nothing but a calculated setup.
A scheme to kiss billionaire ass and pave the way for his homewrecking first love. Carter checked his Rolex. His smug expression instantly snapped into panicked urgency.
He pointed a rigid finger at my face, his voice dropping to a vicious hiss. "Astrid. Vaughn’s convoy is pulling into the underground garage right now. Read the room.
Do not ruin this for me. Get out of my sight!" Chapter 3 Harper stared at my trembling frame. Pure, unrestrained triumph spilled from her eyes.
She pointed a perfectly manicured finger at the glittering crowd behind the glass doors. "Astrid, if you want to get inside so badly, get on your hands and knees.
Kiss my heels and scream, 'I am worthless trash that nobody wants!' "Do it fast.
Finish before Vaughn gets here, and I might just be merciful enough to let you pass out appetizers!" I squeezed my eyes shut.
A single, scalding tear broke free and slid down my cheek. It hit the marble floor. In that exact second, the last pathetic shred of my weakness died entirely. Carter didn't know.
That fifteen million didn't just magically appear from Zenith Capital. It bled directly from my family’s trust. I fed him a lie to protect his fragile ego.
And he definitely didn't know Zenith’s cutthroat CEO was Vaughn. My childhood best friend.
I held the phone to my ear, my voice dropping to a dead, absolute calm. "Are you in the building? Come straight up. And sever every single line of credit to his company.
I want him bankrupt in ten minutes." I ended the call. Carter doubled over.
He clutched his stomach, laughing so hard tears gathered in the corners of his eyes. "Astrid, you are completely unhinged!
You are getting thrown out on the street, and you dare threaten to bankrupt me?! I can't wait to see what happens first.
My bankruptcy, or you on your hands and knees barking like a dog!" The socialites inside exchanged eager glances. They cracked the heavy double doors open.
Brenda shoved her way to the front. She lunged, aiming her heavy hands right for my shoulders, spitting venom. "Carter, stop wasting breath on her! Vaughn will be here any second.
We cannot let her ruin the optics! If she won't get on her knees herself, we'll do it for Harper.
Let's force her head down, make her beg, and toss her out!" I stared at Brenda's incoming hands. A dark, violent energy flooded my veins.
I tolerated Carter because I was blind enough to love him once. But these parasites? These leeches who only ate because I threw them scraps? Who the hell did they think they were?
Crack! I didn't hesitate. I swung my arm with every ounce of strength I possessed. My palm connected hard with Brenda’s heavily contoured face.
The sheer impact sent her crashing backward into the doorframe. "Ah! You hit me?!" she shrieked, clutching her rapidly swelling cheek. I rolled my wrist.
Numbness radiated up my forearm.
I dragged my deadened gaze over the rest of the trembling women. "Touch me again, and I guarantee your entire family will be begging on the streets of Manhattan tomorrow." The slap froze the socialites.
It ignited Carter. "Astrid!" Carter roared. Thick blue veins strained against his temples. "Security! Pin this psycho down! Do not let her cause a scene for Vaughn!
Force her to the floor. She is going to grovel and apologize to Harper right now!" Carter spat, his face twisted into an ugly, feral snarl. The guards closed in.
Every escape route vanished. Chapter 4 A man in a frayed suit forced his way to the front of the crowd. Warren. A smalltime developer I had quietly bailed out years ago.
He planted himself between me and the wall of muscle. He held his hands up, practically begging Carter. "Carter, please. Astrid gave you four years of her life. She stood by you.
Vaughn is about to walk through those doors. If he sees this kind of chaos, the optics will kill your deal—" "Who the hell are you to lecture me?!" Carter barked.
Paranoia and adrenaline gnawed at Carter. He couldn't risk a single misstep tonight. He lifted his heavy Italian loafer and drove it straight into Warren’s gut.
Warren slammed onto the marble.
He curled into a tight ball, gagging and clutching his stomach. "If anyone ruins this pitch for me tonight, I will destroy you!" Carter roared. "Drag this old piece of trash out of here!
Beat him until he stops moving!" Acid burned the back of my throat. The only person in this room with a spine was bleeding out on my floor. "Stop!
Are you out of your fucking minds?!" They didn't even blink. Two guards dragged Warren away by his collar.
The other two locked their sights on me, smirking as they lunged to force my knees to the floor. "Carter!" Evan sprinted down the hallway.
He skidded on the polished floor, nearly tripping over his own feet, his chest heaving and drenched in cold sweat. "Carter—sir! We have a situation!" Carter’s jaw tightened.
Pure disgust flashed across his face. "Pull yourself together! Do I look like I have time for a panic attack?
I am clearing the floor!" Tears of absolute panic pooled in Evan’s eyes. He swallowed hard, shoving a glowing iPad toward Carter’s chest. "No—sir! It’s the firm!
Zenith Capital just sent an emergency alert, they—" Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed from the end of the corridor. The entire penthouse froze.
Every head snapped toward the elevator bank. Vaughn stepped out. Flanked by two rows of tactical security, the CEO of Zenith Capital commanded the space instantly.
Carter practically vibrated with greed. He didn't even glance at the iPad. He shoved Evan violently into the wall to clear his path. "Get the fuck out of my way! Vaughn is here!
Keep your mouth shut before you ruin my pitch!" A sickeningly sweet, sycophantic smile plastered across Carter’s face. "Vaughn!
You made it!" He bowed slightly, gesturing toward the doors. "Having you in my home is an absolute honor. Please, come right in!" Vaughn didn't break his stride.
He blew past Carter’s outstretched hand like it didn't exist. He didn't offer him a single, passing glance. Carter’s smile petrified on his face.
The breathless chatter of the Manhattan elite died instantly. Vaughn marched straight toward me. He raised his boot and mercilessly kicked the security guard gripping my shoulder.
The guard crumpled. The man who controlled half the wealth in New York City stopped directly in front of me.
He lowered his head in absolute deference, offering a leatherbound folio with both hands. "Boss.
It’s done," Vaughn’s voice carried through the dead silent hall. "Every single credit line to his company has been severed. The withdrawal process is locked.
Carter is officially bankrupt." Chapter 5
