At 2:00 a.m., a short video tore through the internet.
A woman lay curled in the fetal position on an emergency stretcher, frantically shielding her face with a white hotel bath towel as paramedics wheeled her through the lobby.
That was my wife, Vanessa. The doctors confirmed it was severe internal tearing and massive bleeding. The cause? Extremely rough sex. My vision tunneled.
I dug my fingernails into my palms until the skin broke, ready to rip the city apart to hunt down the bastard who booked that room with her. But I never factored in the blind spot.
The animal she was screwing wasn't some random stranger. It was Chase. My best friend of twenty years—the very same man I had personally dragged back from the brink of bankruptcy.
Chapter 1 2:00 a.m. An ambulance screeched to a halt outside the Red Pillow Hotel. Ten minutes later, paramedics wheeled a woman out on a stretcher.
She lay curled in the fetal position, frantically shielding her face and upper body with a white hotel bath towel.
It didn't take long for the clip to go viral on TikTok, spawning a dozen different angles. When it first popped up on my FYP, I treated it like premium latenight entertainment.
I even left a snarky comment joking about what kind of wild, unhinged party it takes to land someone in the ER.
That was, until my eyes locked onto the bracelet dangling from the woman's limp wrist.
It was a dead ringer for the custom piece I’d bought my wife for our fifth anniversary just a few weeks ago. The air punched out of my lungs.
The cold steel of an invisible gun barrel pressed right between my shoulder blades. No way. Impossible.
Vanessa was supposed to be halfway across the country on a business trip in Seattle. I booked her flight myself. So what if the jewelry matched?
Even a niche designer piece had duplicates floating around out there, right? And a woman with a similar build? Literally a dime a dozen.
I kept feeding myself these pathetic little lies while my thumbs frantically refreshed the search bar, hunting down every alternate angle on the app.
Most of the footage was grainy garbage. I scrolled for what felt like hours until I hit the jackpot—a closeup shot that caught her hand in high definition.
I dragged the playback speed down to half speed, dissecting it frame by frame. The flashing ambulance lights caught the rhinestones on that familiar white acrylic manicure.
The glare felt like a physical slap to the face. It was her. Vanessa. The woman I’d been married to for three years was screwing around behind my back.
Blood roared in my ears, drowning out everything else. The phone rattled in my grip, my knuckles turning bonewhite.
The sheer, humiliating fury of being played for a fool clawed up my throat, suffocating me until I was practically gasping for air.
I scrubbed through the videos a dozen more times, hunting for the bastard's shadow, but came up empty. Didn't matter. Vanessa’s infidelity was stamped right there in 4K.
How else do you explain a wife who’s supposed to be out of state, getting wheeled out of a local luxury suite halfnaked?
I didn't even want to touch the vile, graphic theories the comment section was spitting out about why she needed the medics in the first place.
I snatched my jacket off the hook and floored my car all the way to the ER.
The moment I slammed my ID on the triage desk and declared myself Vanessa’s husband, the triage nurse’s face shifted.
A sickening cocktail of secondhand embarrassment and pity flashed in her eyes. That look alone poured gasoline on the fire eating through my chest.
She pointed a pen down the fluorescent hallway, murmuring that Vanessa was on an IV drip and officially out of the woods. "What happened to her?" I asked, hating myself for the pathetic sliver of genuine concern that slipped into my voice.
It didn't last.
The next sentence vaporized it. "Severe internal tearing." The nurse paused, her gaze dropping to her clipboard before darting back to me. "It was caused by extremely rough sex." Static blasted through my skull.
A chorus of mocking voices echoed in the hollow space between my ears. Extremely rough sex. I pictured my wife—the ice queen who treated our bedroom like a convent—and tasted bile.
In three years of marriage, Vanessa had always been chillingly indifferent to physical intimacy. She never initiated.
Two out of three times I tried, she’d brush me off with an excuse.
Even when she finally relented, she demanded pitchblack darkness, laying there like a passive mannequin just enduring the routine.
I’d spent years convincing myself she was just naturally prudish. Turns out, she wasn't a prude. She just couldn't stomach the thought of me.
She could go so wild she ended up with massive internal bleeding. I didn't even walk into the room. I pivoted on my heel and walked straight out the sliding glass doors of the ER.
I sparked a cigarette in the parking lot, pulling the toxic smoke deep into my lungs until the trembling in my hands finally stopped.
The blinding rage solidified into something cold and sharp. It was a bitter pill to swallow, but I had to face the reality of the rot in my marriage.
Step one: dig up the name of the guy who ruined it. The hotel stonewalled me, hiding behind standard corporate privacy policies to protect the booking details.
But the front desk clerk let one crucial detail slip—Vanessa checked in with a man. And when the bleeding started, he was the one who dialed 911.
Chapter 2 After Vanessa was loaded onto the stretcher, the guy immediately checked out and bolted through the side exit like a rat.
With the hotel stonewalling me, I had no choice but to head back to the house. Dawn was bleeding through the blinds by the time I crashed onto the living room sofa.
I reached over, grabbed the framed wedding photo off the end table, and dropped it straight into the trash can. This marriage was dead.
No man on earth just smiles and wears a pair of horns. But before I handed her the divorce papers, there was a tab that needed settling.
I’d poured everything into her these past few years, practically bankrolling her entire family. And this was the return on my investment. Fine.
If that was how we were playing it, the gloves were coming off. Vanessa and I went to college together.
She grew up dirtpoor with farming parents and a deadbeat younger brother, Jace.
The first time I ever stepped foot in her mother’s house, the old bat didn't even offer me a glass of water before demanding I pay off her son's threehundredthousanddollar mountain of debt as a condition for marrying her daughter.
I hesitated for a split second—didn't even say no—and her face instantly soured.
She practically pointed at the door, bragging that Vanessa had the looks and the degree, that guys were lining up down the block to put a ring on her finger.
She told me to get out and stop wasting her daughter's time if I was going to be a cheapskate. I knew my worth. I had a fully paidoff house and a nice car.
My parents were both comfortable civil servants, and as their only kid, I didn't have to share the pie.
After graduation, I slid right into a management track at my uncle's company, making solid money with a clear path to the top.
By any normal metric, I was the goldstandard soninlaw. I figured her mother would be thrilled. Yeah, right.
When my parents caught wind of the extortion, they begged me to cut my losses. A family of leeches isn't a onetime problem; it's a life sentence.
But then Vanessa showed up sobbing under my apartment window, apologizing profusely for her mother.
She cried that if I dumped her, her mother was going to sell her off to some fiftyyearold creep in their hometown to settle the kid's debt.
Three days later, I walked back into that house with three hundred grand in cold, hard cash and locked the marriage down. But that initial payout? Just an appetizer.
From that day on, my motherinlaw and Jace treated me like a personal ATM. They hit me up constantly—business ventures, home renovations, tuition for fake trade schools.
They called them "loans," but I never saw a single dime back. Over three years, they bled another two hundred grand out of my accounts. Jace was a professional degenerate.
Drinking, gambling, whoring—you name it. Every other week he'd step in some new pile of shit, and I was expected to play cleanup. I was sick to my stomach over it.
But every time Vanessa turned those red, pleading eyes on me, I caved. Now that the marriage was dead in the water, I could finally cut off the dead weight.
Vanessa had married me with nothing but the clothes on her back. I even landed her the cushy corporate job she had. She’d played me for a fool, taking everything and giving nothing.
Time to reset the board. She was going to leave with exactly what she brought into this: nothing.
I grabbed my phone, texted my lawyer to start drafting the divorce papers, and then wired a buddy some cash to scrub those TikTok videos off the internet.
I wasn't about to let my reputation get dragged through the mud with hers. I had just put the phone down when the front door clicked open. Vanessa.
She looked like a ghost, all pale skin and darting eyes. She had to lean heavily against the foyer wall just to keep herself upright.
The triage nurse must have warned her I’d been there. She knew the gig was up.
She hobbled over, practically dropping to her knees in front of the sofa, and grabbed my arm, letting the tears fall. It was the same pathetic, helpless act that used to work on me.
Now? It just made my stomach turn. I ripped my arm out of her grip, leaning back. The momentum sent her collapsing onto the hardwood.
She immediately winced, clutching her lower abdomen, and sucked in a sharp, ragged breath. That single movement struck a match directly onto the powder keg in my chest.
I stared down at her. "Cramps? Must have been one hell of a ride." I let out a dry laugh. "I gotta hand it to you, Vanessa.
You really blew my expectations out of the water." I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees. "Spill it.
Who's the guy, and how long have you been letting him hit it?" My fists were clenched so tight my fingernails sliced right into my palms.
Chapter 3 Vanessa scrambled backward, her head thrashing from side to side.
Tears cut tracks through her pale foundation as she sputtered out a chaotic mess of words. "No, no, just this once!
It was a onetime thing, I swear, you have to believe me…" She reached for me, her fingers trembling. "I just had a moment of weakness. I know I messed up.
It’ll never happen again…" She kept sobbing, begging for a clean slate, but her jaw locked tight the second I demanded a name. Touching. A real modernday Romeo and Juliet.
Back in college, the first time I ever actually threw a punch was because some local punk catcalled her right in front of me.
I put the guy in the ER and had to eat a fivethousanddollar fine. Vanessa had been shaking like a leaf that night.
I remember wrapping my arm around her shoulder and swearing, "If anyone ever touches you again, I'll chop their hands off." It was just the arrogant, testosteronefueled garbage you say when you're twenty.
I burned that kind of impulsive stupidity out of my system a long time ago.
But looking at Vanessa's panicked face, it was like she genuinely thought I was going to grab a meat cleaver and hunt the guy down. It was almost funny.
When I was brawling in the street for her, she cowered ten feet away. Now, she was suddenly willing to throw herself on a grenade to protect another man.
I thought back to how hard I fought my parents to marry her, swearing up and down that she was sweet, wholesome, and would make the perfect wife.
Every single one of those words was currently slapping me across the face. "We're done. I'll have the papers drawn up." A dull thudding started behind my temples.
I stood up, smoothing the front of my shirt, ready to walk. I'd just write off the last few years as a bad investment.
Whether she spread her legs for him once or a hundred times didn't matter. The result was exactly the same. Vanessa froze.
Then she dragged herself across the floor, throwing her arms around my calves to pin me in place. "No, please, no! I know I ruined it.
Just forgive me this once…" She buried her face against my knee. "You can't let our baby grow up without a father…" The air vanished from the room.
A highpitched ringing pierced my ears. "What baby?" My fingers started shaking. Vanessa's eyes lit up like she'd just grabbed a lifeline. "Our baby.
I'm pregnant." She wiped her face, her words rushing out. "I just found out last night during the ultrasound… I wanted to wait for the right moment to surprise you.
You can't abandon us…" Her voice buzzed, turning into a low static. "How far along?" I locked my jaw, forcing the words out flat and even. "Just one month." Vanessa offered a pathetic, begging smile, reaching up to hook her arms around my neck. "We can just be a happy family of three from now on, okay?" She rubbed her cheek against my chest. "Your parents are going to be so thrilled to finally be grandparents." Yeah.
They'd been begging for a grandkid since the day we got married.
Too bad. "What's wrong?" Vanessa's voice wobbled, picking up on my dead silence. "Nothing." I snapped back to reality, smoothly peeling her arms off my neck. "Why are you out of the hospital?
You're bleeding internally." Her eyes watered on cue.
She claimed the doctors ordered her to stay in bed, but she sneaked out because she knew I was mad and wanted to do damage control in person.
She pulled that injured puppy routine again, tilting her head like I was the bad guy for being upset. "If you're pregnant, you need to rest." I took a step back. "We'll talk about the rest when you're discharged." Catching the fake compromise in my tone, her shoulders visibly dropped.
She nodded, tears pooling in her eyes. I dodged her gaze, drove her straight back to the ER, and demanded to see the chart. Yep. The ultrasound confirmed it. Pregnant.
I watched the nurses hook her back up to the IV, muttered an excuse about a sudden crisis at the office, and walked out of the room.
The second the automatic hospital doors slid shut behind me, the dam broke.
I slammed my fist into the rough bark of an oak tree in the parking lot, the impact scraping the skin off my knuckles. Those sick, twisted bastards. Vanessa was pregnant, alright.
But there was a zero percent chance that kid was mine.
Chapter 4 Over the past few years of marriage, I didn't feel ready to be a father, and Vanessa always seemed indifferent to the idea of kids anyway.
To spare her body the toll of birth control, I booked a private appointment and secretly got a vasectomy. I never told a single soul. Yet here we are.
Not only was she spreading her legs for another man, but she also wanted me to play daddy to a bastard. Just this once, she swore. Right. Just once, and she's already knocked up.
A few hours ago, I just wanted to sign the papers and cut the cord. Now? Now the game had changed.
Every ounce of humiliation she dragged me through, I was going to carve right back out of her.
Back at the house, I shoved my hand under the throw pillow and pulled out Vanessa’s phone.
She had been so panicked and desperate to play the victim earlier that she didn't even notice me kicking it deep into the couch cushions.
I rushed her out the door so fast she left it behind. I knew her passcode. Her main contact list and iMessages were scrubbed clean—not a single red flag.
But when I tapped into her account settings and hit switch profiles, there it was. A burner account. I bypassed the SMS verification and pulled up the friend list.
It had exactly one contact. I tapped into his feed. Row after row of photos filled the screen. Vanessa curled up in his chest.
Vanessa beaming with that sickeningly sweet smile she hadn't given me in years. I stared at the man’s face until the pixels blurred.
A bucket of ice water crashed over my head, freezing the blood in my veins. It was Chase. The man I called my best friend. The guy I’d known for the better part of twenty years.
Chase grew up loaded, but his family's empire took a massive hit a few years back.
Gross mismanagement left them wide open, and their rivals lured them into a brutal corporate death trap.
When the ship started sinking, every single one of their socalled "business friends" vanished. The nice ones just watched them drown. The ruthless ones threw anvils.
Franklin's entire life's work evaporated practically overnight, and Chase—fresh out of college and barely warming a desk at the firm—was powerless to stop the bleeding.
I didn't even blink. I went straight to my Uncle Lawrence and begged him to throw the family a lifeline.
At the time, I was just a grunt grinding away in the middle management of his company. But Lawrence was a lifelong bachelor with no kids of his own. He treated me like blood.
His massive corporate empire? That was slated to be mine one day. A hardened apex predator in the boardroom, he scoffed at my bleeding heart and this "brotherhood" nonsense.
But I ground him down. Eventually, he caved and pulled Chase's family out of the fire.
A massive capital injection hit their accounts, yanking their enterprise right off the chopping block of bankruptcy. But Lawrence didn't do it for free.
He made me sign a blood oath: ten years. Ten years of grinding under his boot, learning the ropes from the ground up, without taking a single dime in salary.
If I proved my worth at the end of the decade, he’d hand me the keys to the kingdom and retire to a private island. Of course, I wasn't exactly living on instant ramen.
My parents handed me a black card, and combining that with my yearend dividend payouts from Lawrence’s company, I lived more than comfortably. At first, it ate at me.
I was a grown man with a degree; leeching off my parents felt humiliating. But they and Lawrence just laughed it off, telling me to focus on the long game.
We had just gotten engaged, and Vanessa didn't utter a single complaint about my zerosalary setup.
She actually played the perfect, supportive fiancée, offering to grind it out at the company right alongside me.
Lawrence and my parents practically beamed as they politely shot the idea down. They told her that a daughterinlaw in our family wasn't brought in to be a workhorse.
All she needed to do was relax and focus on building a solid marriage with me. If she could give them a grandchild to expand the family tree, even better.
Vanessa tried to push back, playing the independent card, but my mother just slid a platinum credit card directly into her palm.
She told her pointblank: I might not be drawing a paycheck for the next ten years, but Vanessa would never, ever have to worry about cash.
Chapter 5 After the wedding, Vanessa never checked a price tag. I always made sure her credit cards cleared.
Five years in, I was finally thanking my lucky stars for that zerosalary contract.
Between her bottomlesspit parents and her deadbeat brother, any liquid cash I had would have been sucked bonedry. Now, the entire chessboard clicked into focus.
My parents and Uncle Lawrence didn’t just set up that tenyear trial to test my business chops. They were vetting her.
They smelled the rot on my inlaws from day one and deliberately locked down the family assets. If we made it ten years, built a solid foundation, and had a kid, great.
If she pulled something like this? She walks away with zero claim to the family empire. Old money doesn't play around. Five years ago, I would have bet my life Vanessa was loyal.
I also would have taken a bullet for Chase—the guy I personally dragged out of financial purgatory. I never imagined he’d orchestrate something this filthy right under my nose.
Fine. If I pulled him out of the abyss, I could shove him right back in
