Preview · Chapter 1

The snow fell in thick, blinding sheets. My boots lost their grip on the slick pavement.

I flailed, my bare hand slapping against the metal edge of a street food cart to catch my balance. The vendor stood there, his jaw locked. "You touch it, you buy it.

Ten bucks a bowl." I fumbled for my phone to tap the screen. My heel caught an icy patch. I went down again.

This time, I dodged the metal cart and snatched the closest lifeline—his jacket. Rrip. Cheap fabric gave way. The harsh winter air hit a sudden, radiating wall of body heat.

Half his chest was fully exposed to the snow. My brain shortcircuited.

I blinked, realizing my other hand was currently clamped tight around his waist, fingers digging instinctively into the hard ridges of his obliques.

I swallowed hard, my voice shrinking. "Do I… have to buy this if I touch it, too?" Before he could even twitch, a line of glowing text materialized in the empty air between us, glitching like a rogue AR projection: [DramaQueenX: This extra is toast!

Not only did she wreck the villain's cart, but she just stripped him in public.

Once he climbs to the top of the food chain, she's the first one he's deleting!] Chapter 1 God, was the universe actually messing with me right now?

I chuckled at a TikTok this morning. That was my peak happiness for the day. And now, one slip on the ice meant I was destined to be slaughtered by a future overlord?

Silas stared down at me. Shadows pooled in his eyes, heavy and suffocating. The sheer cold radiating from his glare made the winter air feel like a joke. My chest tightened.

My lungs forgot how to pull in oxygen. I scrambled backward, quickly releasing my grip on his waist. The moment I shifted my weight, a sickening pop echoed.

A sharp spike of pain shot up my leg. I gasped, my knees buckling as I collapsed into the snow, clawing at my leg.

Before I could even assess the damage, my phone buzzed against the ice. Marcus. My walking red flag of a boss.

I swiped answer, pressing the speaker to my ear. "Cassidy," his voice boomed, dripping with corporate venom. "Do you have any concept of how late you are?!" "Marcus, the snow is blinding out here.

The roads are—" "Save the excuses. Everyone else made it to their desks.

Why are you the only one incapable of doing your job?" "That's not—" I choked on a harsh breath, staring down at my rapidly swelling ankle.

The skin was already turning an ugly, bruised purple. "I need to take a sick day." "I've told you a million times, PTO requires advance notice!" Marcus snapped. "You know what?

Let's just make it a permanent vacation. Don't bother showing up tomorrow. Or ever." Click. The line went dead. Screw him.

That toxic wasteland of a company was slowly killing me anyway. I'd been planning my exit for months. I repeated the lie in my head, trying to force it to stick. It didn't.

The brutal throbbing in my joint, the icy needles of wind lashing against my exposed cheeks, the utter humiliation of sitting in the slush—it all crashed down at once.

A painful lump swelled in my throat, choking off my air supply. My vision blurred.

Hot, humiliating tears breached my lash line, spilling over freezing skin. "Are you alright?" The voice was low. Clear. It cut right through the ringing in my ears.

I swiped the back of my hand across my cheeks, scrubbing away the wetness. Gritting my teeth, I forced myself upright, balancing all my weight on my good leg.

I refused to let him see me crack. "How much for the food I ruined?" I deflected, my voice trembling only slightly. "Let me pay you." I just needed to tap my screen, wire the money, and limp as far away from this future tyrant as physically possible.

Survival first. I shoved my phone toward his payment scanner.

A long, calloused hand shot out, his fingers wrapping firmly over my screen. "Don't worry about it," Silas said softly. "It's on me." His face was an unreadable mask.

He picked up his metal spatula, methodically scraping the remaining, intact pieces of spicy street food into a small paper bowl.

He grabbed a ladle, pouring a thick, rich sauce over the top, the metal bowl clinking sharply as he mixed it. My eyes tracked the movement.

His hands were striking—long fingers, pronounced knuckles, undeniably masculine. But the skin was raw.

From his cuticles to his wrists, the biting frost had painted his hands in an angry, mottled wash of pale purple and biting red. Chapter 2 I scanned the empty street.

The brutal freeze had chased off every other vendor. Only Silas remained. He stood alone next to his beatup, retrofitted street cart.

Snowflakes clung to the pitchblack strands of his hair and dusted his painfully thin shoulders.

The icy wind ripped right through the jagged tear I’d made in his jacket, biting into his bare skin. A sharp, throbbing ache shot up my leg the second I shifted my weight.

Running wasn't an option. I was stuck here, frozen in place, legitimately wondering if he was about to poison my food.

The floating text suddenly shifted tone, filled with pity. [DramaQueenX: Silas actually breaks my heart.

The relentless bullying at school left him with a severe traumainduced freeze response. Whenever someone attacks him, his brain's fightorflight misfires.

He just freezes up and takes the hit, too numb to even process the pain or fight back.] [DramaQueenX: And it gets worse.

The DuPonts—his adoptive family—treated him like garbage before abandoning him to move overseas. They left him with absolutely zero cash and a severely ill grandma, Beatrice.

He’s a high school senior busting his ass at a street cart just to keep the lights on.] [DramaQueenX: Thank god Cleo shows up later to fix him.

She totally unpacks his trauma and cures his condition.

It’s the whole reason he stays obsessively loyal to her, even when she turns around and breaks his heart.] [DramaQueenX: Honestly, with a life this toxic, it's a miracle he hasn't completely checked out yet.] My brain latched onto that crucial piece of intel.

If I could just help him heal from this traumainduced freeze response… did that mean I could rewrite my own death sentence?

A warm paper bowl was shoved into my line of sight, interrupting my panic spiral. I didn't reach for it.

Instead, I looked up at him, testing the waters. "Any chance… I could hitch a ride on your cart?" He pushed that rusted cart all the way to urgent care. Dr.

Oakes checked me out, prescribed some ibuprofen, and told me to stay off my feet.

Then, Silas practically threw me over his back and hauled me up six agonizing flights of stairs to my apartment.

The rigid muscles of his back shifted beneath my thighs with every step. I could feel the ragged, uneven rhythm of his breathing vibrating through his torn coat.

I’d tried to make small talk on the way, complimenting his name. He gave me absolutely nothing in return.

The second we reached my door, he set me down on my good foot and immediately pivoted to leave. His face was a locked vault of ice. No microexpressions.

No opening for me to pry my way in. Panic spiked in my chest. I grabbed the shredded edge of his jacket. "Wait.

My ankle is killing me, and I literally can't walk," I blurted out, laying it on thick. "Could you do me one massive favor? I have groceries in the fridge.

Could you just make me something quick before you go? I haven't eaten all day. I'm starving." His dark brows pinched together.

Heavy silence stretched between us for three agonizing seconds before he finally sighed, pushing his tattered sleeves past his elbows, and stalked toward my cramped kitchen.

A tiny spark of hope ignited in my gut.

Maybe this condition of his was easier to crack than I thought. "Make extra!" I yelled toward the sound of clinking pans. "I'm literally starving to death!" The glitchy text flooded my vision again, relentlessly annoying. [DramaQueenX: This NPC is such a massive roadblock.

She’s sabotaging his hustle. Beatrice is critically ill, so Silas took over the street cart to keep them alive. Every cent he makes goes straight to her meds.

He literally survives on cheap vending machine ramen.] [DramaQueenX: Ugh, Silas was actually a decent kid once.

But the relentless bullying and pure toxicity he deals with every day ruins him.

His traumainduced freeze response just gets worse until he completely detaches from his emotions and turns into a ruthless psycho.] [DramaQueenX: This extra needs to stay in her lane.

You don’t just magically fix deeprooted trauma in a day. She should just accept her fate.] I swiped my hand through the air, completely ignoring the glowing text.

While Silas was busy chopping vegetables, I hobbled into my bedroom, gritting my teeth against the dull throb in my ankle.

I dug through the back of my closet and pulled out a plastic shopping bag. Inside was a brandnew men’s puffer coat, a thermal henley, and a pair of dark denim jeans.

They were supposed to be a gift for Kyle. My toxic ex had dumped me over text before I could even hand them over.

The return window closed months ago, so the clothes had just been gathering dust in the dark. Chapter 3 I never expected them to actually come in handy.

Silas set a steaming bowl of noodles onto the coffee table. I forced a soft smile, catching his eye. "Thank you.

By the way, since I totally destroyed your jacket, I dug up some spare clothes." I lifted the dark denim and the puffer coat, gesturing toward his broad shoulders. "Try them on.

They don't have the tags anymore, but they smell like fresh laundry." A flicker of emotion crossed his eyes before fading away. "I don't need them." "If you walk home looking like that, your family will panic." The mention of Beatrice made his jaw tighten.

He stared at the torn fabric hanging off his chest. Silence stretched between us. He didn't say yes, but the harsh rejection evaporated.

I shoved the bundle of clothes directly against his chest. His fingers curled around the fabric, finally surrendering.

I inhaled the warm broth, mentally preparing myself for the clothes to drown his lean frame. The bedroom door clicked open. My breath hitched.

The denim hung a little loose, but his sheer height and broad shoulders filled out the dark thermal perfectly. The casual fit just made him look effortlessly striking.

The glitchy text exploded across my vision again. [DramaQueenX: Holy—this is a massive upgrade from that $10 thrift store trash he usually wears.] [DramaQueenX: I officially decree he burn those old jeans.

And that cheap puffer belongs in a dumpster.] [DramaQueenX: Not gonna lie, seeing the villain look this good actually makes me feel kinda bad for him.] [DramaQueenX: Okay, but this scene gives off serious domestic vibes.] [DramaQueenX: Domestic vibes mean nothing.

ParentTeacher Conferences happen in a few days. Silas NEVER gets anyone to show up for him at school events. That's exactly why Vaughn and his crew target him.

They literally bet money that his seat stays empty, then force him to his knees to bark like a dog while they trash his clothes.] [DramaQueenX: Plus, he attends on a fullride financial aid scholarship.

One time he actually tried to fight back, and Dr. Mercer—that spineless principal—forced HIM to apologize just to avoid a scandal. It completely triggered his condition.

Honestly, freezing up serves as a trauma response. If he doesn't swallow the abuse, they'll expel him.] [DramaQueenX: Exactly.

Vaughn's crew even spread a rumor that he AirDropped unsolicited pics to girls. He couldn't even defend himself, so now the whole school thinks he acts like a total creep.

His condition paralyzes him. He just absorbs all that toxic hate until he snaps and goes psycho.] [DramaQueenX: It breaks my heart. He has insane grades.

He screams Ivy League material. If he just made it to college, his future would shine.] [DramaQueenX: Too bad he never gets the chance.

This upcoming conference serves as his final breaking point. Vaughn's public humiliation destroys him. His condition spirals, his grades tank, and he drops out.

Fate just screwed him over.] An Ivy League prodigy forced out of school? A hard knot formed in my stomach. My brow furrowed. Fate? Screw fate.

I control my own narrative now, and by extension, I control his. My fists clenched hard against my sides. This required immediate intervention.

Vaughn, his pathetic little crew, and the spineless Dr. Mercer needed a massive reality check. Their absolute strictest, most unhinged motherfigure just entered the chat.

Silas caught my darkened expression, his jaw tightening. "They don't fit right.

I'll take them off." He spun on his heel, reaching for the hem of the shirt. "No, wait!" I panicked, grabbing his wrist. "They fit perfectly.

You look… really good." A faint rush of color hit the tips of his ears. He quickly ripped his gaze away, staring fixedly at the floorboards.

Chapter 4 I slid a steaming bowl of noodles across the table toward him. "You gave me free street food. I feed you noodles.

Fair trade, right?" I let out a loud, dramatic sigh. "Man. If my little brother, Damon, were here, he’d be exactly your age. Such a shame." Silas’s grip on his chopsticks froze.

I kept my eyes on my bowl, my voice dropping to a somber whisper. "Tragic, really. He got hit by a car five years ago, right around his freshman year of high school.

Dead on impact." Total lie. Damon didn't even make it to high school. The little punk stole my entire college fund to blow on illegal gambling.

To cover his massive debts, the Moores tried forcing me to marry the local creep everyone stayed away from.

I packed a bag in the middle of the night, ran, and completely ghosted my toxic family. Silas dropped his chopsticks. Pure guilt flashed across his face. "I'm sorry.

I didn't mean to make you think about something so painful." I forced a couple of tears to pool in my eyes. "Yeah. The worst part?

I never even got to attend a single ParentTeacher Conference for him. Never got to see him thrive in high school. It totally wrecks me." Silas kept his eyes glued to the table.

The quiet in the room suddenly felt thick enough to choke on. Finally, he lifted his head, his dark eyes hesitant. "If you… aren't busy.

Could you come to mine?" he asked softly. 'You know.

In his place.'" I beamed at him. "I'd love to!" I slipped into a sleek trench coat, styling my hair into a voluminous blowout and swiping on a lethal, bloodred lipstick.

I slid on a pair of oversized designer sunglasses and stepped into my sharpest stilettos.

Today, I was channeling the unhinged energy of a boomer dad in a suburban HOA Facebook group. Anyone who crossed me was going to face my absolute, unhinged wrath.

The high school hallways were already packed. The usually quiet corridors now buzzed with energy, crammed with parents. My eyes locked onto the far end of the hall.

Silas stood completely alone, his posture stiff and guarded. I lifted my hand to wave. Before I could even call his name, a pack of guys swarmed him.

They completely boxed him in, shoving him against the lockers. The glowing text exploded across my vision. [DramaQueenX: Oh god, it’s happening. The bathroom scene.

Vaughn and his crew are cornering Silas.] [DramaQueenX: They’re gonna force him to his knees and make him bark like a dog, then dump dirty mop water all over him.

He's gonna have to sit through the entire conference soaked in trash water while the whole class laughs.] [DramaQueenX: They literally know he has zero backup.

It’s so messed up!] [DramaQueenX: And Miriam, Cleo's mom, is about to walk in. Silas gets utterly humiliated right in front of the girl he’s obsessed with.

This completely breaks him. It's his villain origin moment.] Vaughn shoved his hand hard against Silas's chest. My stilettos cracked against the linoleum.

I stormed forward, glaring directly at Vaughn. "What the hell do you think you're doing?!" I snapped. Vaughn blinked, totally thrown off.

His pudgy face twisted into a sneer. "Back off, Karen. Mind your own business." He reached out, shoving my shoulder.

The exact second his fingertips made contact with my coat, I threw my weight backward, collapsing dramatically onto the floor.

It was time for an Oscarworthy performance. "Oh my god!" I shrieked, clutching my chest. "Assault! This delinquent just assaulted an adult! The youth of today are completely feral!

Zero home training! Absolute trash!" I pitched my voice louder, ensuring the entire hallway stopped to stare. "Is this the kind of garbage this school breeds?!

How is any child safe here?! I am filing complaints against every single one of you! I'm suing for emotional distress, medical bills, and lost wages!" Chapter 5
