My filthyrich stepbrother has a hearing problem. Everyone expects me to play the doting big sister. Reality check— Callum dragged me out of bed.

I shrugged off his death glare. "Why didn't you just call me in sign language?" He stared at me like I grew a second head. Later, I caught him reading a massive hardcover.

I leaned over his shoulder. "Wait. If you can't hear, how do you read?" He clenched his jaw, forcing the harsh syllables out. "I. Am. Not.

Blind." The live chat completely lost its mind. [Teagan, do you even hear yourself right now? ?] [Callum staring at his sister like she's an absolute menace.jpg] [LMAO I'm dead.

Give it three days and she'll bully the villain into speaking perfect English! ?] Chapter 1 I got home from school to find a strange kid camped out on our front porch.

He looked about eight or nine, huddled into a tiny, solitary ball on the top step. At the sound of our footsteps, his head snapped up.

His eyes locked onto me and my mom—two total strangers. Raw defensiveness flashed in his eyes as he shrank back. I figured he was just a neighbor's kid who got turned around.

I didn't think much of it. Then, glowing text materialized in thin air right in front of my face. [Wait, is this the villain when he was a kid?] [Ugh.

His mom thought he was a burden and dumped him. He had nowhere to go, and since he's deaf, he just dragged himself back to his dad's house.

Too bad his dad just married a new wife.] [Oh! I remember this part. The evil stepsister and her mom get estate security to kick him out. They hide the whole thing from the dad.

The kid ends up homeless, gets abducted, and goes through years of absolute hell.

The second he grows up, he destroys those two toxic women!] I blinked hard, staring at the translucent words scrolling past. Am I hallucinating?

But my brain snagged on the most crucial detail. This kid was my shiny new stepdad's son? Beside me, my mom finally registered the boy huddled by the door.

Her brow furrowed. "Where did this kid come from? He's covered in dirt. I'm calling the gatehouse to find his parents." She pulled out her phone, already turning away.

The boy just watched us, totally oblivious to what she was saying. His jaw clenched tight, panic bleeding into his small features. I didn't have time to process the insanity.

I grabbed my mom's wrist, my words spilling out in a rush. "Wait, Mom! Look at him. He looks exactly like Conrad. What if he's his son?" The live chat had made it crystal clear.

This little guy was destined to become a ruthless villain and make it his life's mission to ruin us. Talk about a massive misunderstanding.

My mom and I were just innocent bystanders in this mess! I had reincarnated into this world and scraped by through thirteen years of pure struggle.

I thought we were finally in the clear when Mom married rich. Turns out, out of all the men in this massive city, she had to marry the ultimate villain's dad. Fuck my life.

It was one thing for the universe not to revolve around me. Did it really have to throw me into a literal meat grinder? Frustration aside, my words hit their mark.

My mom froze, lowering her phone to really study the boy on the steps. "Huh… you're right. He does.

But didn't Conrad say Vanessa took the kid?" I glanced up at the heavy, gray sky. "It's about to pour out here.

Let's just bring him inside first." "Alright." I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding and closed the distance between me and the boy.

As I loomed closer, he scrambled backward. His spine hit the heavy oak front door. He watched my shadow fall over him, his pupils shrinking to pinpricks.

Then, he threw his arms over his head, bracing for a hit. The flinch hit me right in the chest. I dropped to a crouch, getting right on his level. "Hey.

What's your name?" Dead silence. Slowly, hesitantly, he lowered his arms. He peeked up and met my gaze.

Seeing my lips moving, he raised a trembling finger to his ear and shook his head. Right. The chat said he was deaf. I snapped my mouth shut.

I held out an open hand, then pointed at the door. I used two fingers to mimic walking inside, exaggerating the gesture.

I even tipped my head toward the house, probably looking completely ridiculous. He has to understand that, right? Callum stared at me, totally stunned.

Then, a tiny flicker of light broke through the darkness in his eyes. Chapter 2 [I feel like the mom isn't as toxic as the book made her out to be.

She just wanted security to find his parents, not kick him to the curb.] [LMAO, be for real. She totally knows that's her husband's kid. She's just playing dumb. He's the male heir.

That threatens their bag.] I stared at the glowing text. The urge to scream back at the floating words burned in my throat.

But talking to thin air was a oneway ticket to a psych ward. I swallowed the curse words, settling for a quiet, simmering rage.

Mom unlocked the front door, and I nudged Callum inside. We stepped past the foyer into a sprawling, quietly luxurious living room.

I sank into the plush leather sofa, letting out a satisfied sigh. Forget the plot. It was finally my turn to secure the bag! Callum perched rigidly on the edge of a chair.

I ignored him. We weren't close, and I had no intention of kissing his ass. Villain or not, who cares? Mom and I didn't hide his grand return. My conscience was crystal clear.

Mom stepped away to call Conrad. He walked through the door twenty minutes later. He wore a sharply tailored suit. His cold, indifferent gaze swept the room and landed on Callum.

A flicker of surprise crossed his face. Callum scrambled to his feet.

He stared at his dad, his small chest rising and falling with anxious, shallow breaths. "Is this your son?" Mom's voice shattered the heavy silence. Conrad's jaw tightened.

He gave a stiff nod. "Vanessa took him in the divorce. I have no idea why he's back." Mom crossed her arms, letting out a quiet "Oh." Conrad clearly misread her silence.

He studied Callum for a brief second before turning back to my mom. "If his presence bothers you, I can have someone drive him back to Vanessa's right now." Mom just stared at him, totally stunned.

Callum couldn't hear the words, but he could read the temperature of the room perfectly. The light in his dark eyes gradually faded. He dropped his gaze.

His dark bangs shadowed his face.

His small hands balled into tight fists, his knuckles turning stark white as his fingernails dug into his palms. [Just wait until his villain arc drops.

Every single one of these monsters is going to pay!] [Having a stepmom basically turns your real dad into a stepdad. Point proven.] A sharp ache throbbed behind my temples. Hold on.

Conrad phrased that like Mom and I were the wicked stepmonsters kicking the kid to the curb. If we let him leave, Callum would definitely pin the blame on us.

What a manipulative bastard! I grabbed Mom's sleeve and yanked hard. "Mom! I think having a little brother is actually super cute!" Mom blinked, totally thrown off.

She had clearly been ready to agree with Conrad and send the kid packing. Her eyes darted between me and Callum. But she loved me, and she always caved. "He's your son, Conrad.

He belongs here." Conrad didn't argue. He just turned to Callum and flashed a series of rapid hand signs. I couldn't read American Sign Language. But Callum's eyelashes fluttered.

His dark gaze drifted over me and my mom. His lips pressed into a thin, bloodless line. He spun around and marched silently up the sweeping staircase.

Conrad's brow furrowed, a flash of deep irritation crossing his face. I sat there, totally lost. What just happened? [LMAO. The villain totally thought they were just guests.

Bro just realized they hijacked his house.] [Conrad just told him that's his new stepmom and stepsister.

The kid's face literally dropped.] [TL;DR: The villain officially hates the stepsister and her mom.] I stared at the floating text. Thanks for the recap. Never do that again.

Chapter 3 A hand patted my shoulder, snapping me out of my daze. Mom frowned, her head tilted. "Why are your eyes bugging out of your head?

The boy is long gone." I blinked hard, forcing my expression neutral. "Nothing." What an absolute joke of a universe. Mom bought the lie easily.

She smiled, clearly assuming I wanted to play the good big sister. "You'll have plenty of time to bond with him later." Yeah, right.

The second his villain arc kicks off, Mom and I are target practice. I guess that counts as "bonding." A sudden wave of panic clawed at my chest. But then logic hit me.

He was just a kid. A tiny, defenseless kid. His revenge tour wouldn't start for over a decade. I exhaled, shoving the anxiety down, and headed upstairs to my bedroom.

I pushed my door open and instantly slammed to a halt. Callum stood dead center in the hallway. He wore fresh, clean clothes, smelling faintly of citrus soap. Our eyes locked.

What the hell is he doing here? The sudden movement spooked him. His dark eyes blew wide. Panic flashed across his face as he ducked his head, attempting to bolt past me.

Instinct hijacked my brain. My hand shot out, snagging the back collar of his shirt. Callum kept marching forward.

His sneakers squeaked on the hardwood as he realized he wasn't actually moving. "What's wrong?" I peered down at him. Silence.

The idiot in me completely forgot his condition. "Do you need something? What is it? Just tell me…" Callum stared intently at my moving lips.

A heavy silence hung between us before his small hands flew up. His fingers flashed in a rapid, aggressive sequence of American Sign Language. It was a complete blur.

I stared, mesmerized. The kid looked like he was throwing up Naruto hand signs. I had absolutely no idea what he just said. So, I grinned and shot him a giant thumbs up.

Nailed it, kid. [LMAO I'm dying. Bro literally signed 'let go of me' and she gives him a thumbs up?!

Peak gaslighting behavior. ?] [He is absolutely flabbergasted hahahaha] [Adding another grudge to the burn book as we speak! ?] The floating text scrolled rapidly across my vision.

I glanced down. Callum stared at me with pure, deadpan disbelief. I snatched my hand back, dropping his collar like it burned. My bad. Truly.

The second I let go, I expected him to sprint away. He took three fast steps down the hall. Then, he stopped dead in his tracks. He spun back around, locking eyes with me.

A flicker of hesitation crossed his features. His chest heaved.

He forced his mouth open, pushing the harsh, gravelly syllables out of his throat. "Ddinn… ner!" The pronunciation was garbled, heavy and awkward on his tongue.

He spun on his heel and bolted down the stairs. A furious blush crept up the tips of his pale ears.

I stood there, stunned. [Holy shit, did the villain just speak out loud?!] [He's deaf, not mute. He has vocal cords, people.

It's just insanely hard to articulate words when you can't hear yourself.] [Wait… does he actually not hate Teagan that much?] [Be for real.

He's probably just pissed off and wanted food!] I ignored the bickering chat and followed him downstairs to the dining room. Throughout dinner, Callum kept his head ducked.

He couldn't hear the ambient chatter, entirely isolated from the conversation flowing around the table. He methodically picked at the bowl of steamed broccoli closest to his plate.

It was like those garbled, desperate syllables upstairs never even happened. Chapter 4 Dinner dragged on.

Mom shot a sideways glance at Callum. "Is the kid enrolled in school?" Conrad’s fork paused halfway to his mouth.

He hesitated, offering a stiff nod. "He should be." "How do you not know?" Mom stared at him in surprise. My chewing slowed to a stop. The original plotline crashed over me.

In the book, Callum’s parents divorced when he was tiny. Vanessa took him, only to abandon him a few years later. He got abducted. Endured absolute hell.

By the time he finally escaped, he was a feral street kid fighting stray dogs for scraps. He had no education.

He bled, he fought, and it twisted him into a ruthless, unhinged monster. His obsession with destroying the male lead eventually pushed him right off a cliff.

His entire life was a predetermined tragedy. I blinked hard, snapping back to reality. The entire dining table was dead silent.

Everyone was staring at me like I had grown a second head. Huh? I looked down. My fork was hovering directly over Callum’s plate.

I had just dropped a massive, stickysweet glazed short rib right on top of his rice. Callum stared at the meat, then slowly looked up at me in shock.

A hot flush crept up my neck. "Uh… this is really good! You should try it!" Panic set in. I scrambled to cover it up. "Can't reach the roasted veggies? Let me help you out!

Oh, the shrimp is amazing too! And have some of this!" I kept piling food onto his plate until it looked like a small mountain. The atmosphere in the room didn't improve.

It got ten times weirder. I dropped my fork. "I'm stuffed.

Going to my room." I practically sprinted away from the table. [Did she seriously just use her own fork to dump food on his plate? Gross! ?] [Hey, give her a break.

She’s just a kid trying to share. At least she's not fighting him for his food.] [The villain already hates her. He’s definitely got the ick now.

He’s not touching that food.] The glowing text scrolled frantically as I hit the doorway. I paused, throwing a glance over my shoulder. Callum sat frozen for another three seconds.

Then, he picked up his fork. He ducked his head and silently started eating the mountain of food I’d built for him, chewing methodically. He looked surprisingly obedient.

A weird warmth fluttered in my chest. Wait. Is he actually kind of cute? Conrad decided to let him stay, which solved a major problem.

This way, he could go to school like a normal kid. Conrad handled the paperwork. Callum got enrolled in the elementary school right next to my middle school campus.

We commuted to and from school together every day. Even though we barely exchanged a word, the invisible wall between us felt a little thinner.

The proof was waiting for me the next morning. I dragged myself out the front door, halfasleep and completely uncoordinated. I rubbed my eyes and stopped short.

A small silhouette stood patiently on the porch. Callum turned around at the sound of my footsteps.

The early morning mist hung thick in the air, catching the bright, clear light in his dark eyes.

Raymond offered a warm smile from the driver's seat of the idling SUV. "Callum insisted on waiting for you, Teagan." I blinked, a genuine smile breaking across my face.

Having a little brother was actually a total vibe. But of course, disaster struck a few days later. I forgot to set my alarm. I slept like the absolute dead.

Mom and Conrad had already left for work. Callum sat downstairs, watching the clock tick dangerously close to the first bell.

He marched upstairs and tapped lightly on my bedroom door. I heard nothing. I was buried deep in a comalevel sleep. The tapping turned into knocking.

The knocking escalated into a rapid, frantic pounding. I groaned, burying my face into my pillow. I rolled over and kicked the blankets off. "Keep it down!" I yelled.

The pounding outside the door stopped instantly. Dead silence. Chapter 5 I didn't wake up until over an hour later. Sunlight was streaming through the windows, painfully bright.

I glanced at the clock on my nightstand. Holy shit. 9:30 AM. A weak tap echoed against my bedroom door. I scrambled out of bed and ripped it open, fully expecting the housekeeper.

Instead, I was staring down at Callum's tense, pale little face. I blinked at him, my brain still foggy.

The words tumbled out before I could stop them. "Did you oversleep too?" Callum just glared at me. A long, flat stare. I actually looked at him then.

He was fully dressed in his school uniform, dark hair brushed perfectly. He’d clearly been up for a while. Wait.

Did he seriously wait outside my door this whole time? "Why didn't you just call me in sign language?" I snapped, suddenly remembering Conrad had bought him an Apple Watch for the GPS tracking.

Callum’s eyes almost popped out of his skull. "???" [Teagan, do you even hear yourself right now? ?] [LMAO.

Like sign language would wake her up from that coma!] [Callum: My sister doesn't treat me like I'm disabled.

She doesn't even treat me like a person.] I slunk back into my room to wash up, totally mortified. OMG. My brain is officially soup. I blame my 6 AM alarm.

I dragged myself to school for the afternoon session. Callum didn't say another word—probably still too annoyed to speak.

Later that evening, I watched him curled on the sofa, flipping through a hardcover book. I wanted to smooth things over, so I slid in right next to him. The sofa cushions dipped.

Callum’s eyelids twitched, but he didn't retreat. I glanced down at his book, then at his hearing aid.

A random thought popped into my head. "If you can't hear," I asked, genuinely curious and with zero malicious intent, "how can you read?" He froze midpage, clenching the book so hard he nearly ripped the paper.

A violent, hot flush crept up his neck and onto his cheeks. He forced the words out, heavy and strangled with rage. "I. Am. Not. Blind." "Oh." [HAHAHA.

Round two!] [Callum: Sister from hell.jpg] [I'm crying.

Give it three days and she's gonna bully the future villain into speaking perfect English! ?] I got good at teasing him over the next few years.

One afternoon, I spent five minutes throwing wildly complicated, totally nonsensical hand signs at him, maintaining a deadly serious face. He just stared at me.

His dark eyes were so clear, utterly lost in confusion. I held the poker face, but I was dying inside. Of course he didn't understand. I was just throwing random signs!

Even the chat couldn't take it. [Wait, did she just sign 'microwave the toaster'?] Callum finally caught on. He realized I was just messing with him.

His lower lip trembled with sheer rage. "You… are mean!" I just burst out laughing. Being a menace was totally worth it. The days of teasing and bickering blurred together.

Three years flew by. Conrad and Mom were always swamped with work, leaving Callum and me on our own most of the time.

Over those three years, the silent, broody little kid had slowly come out of his shell, becoming just a little less gloomy.

It was another Friday afternoon, the final bell finally ringing. I walked out to the parking lot and scanned the SUV.

Callum wasn't in his usual spot. "Raymond," I said, a frown creasing my brow as I tapped on the driver's side window. "Where’s Callum?" Raymond’s warm expression dropped instantly.

Panic flickered in his eyes. "He didn't come to get you?" I shook my head. "No." Callum got dismissed earlier than I did. He was a creature of habit.

He was always right at the front gate or sitting right here in the car, waiting for me. He never ran off. Maybe he got stuck with cleaning duty?

I spun around, ready to run back to the elementary building. Then, the glowing text materialized, screaming right in front of my face.

Chapter 6 [Callum’s bio mom just snatched him!] [Didn't that bitch abandon him years ago? Why the hell is she back?] [Who knows, but it's definitely a massive red flag.

She's up to no good!] I stared at the glowing text. A deep frown carved into my forehead. Vanessa took Callum? That never happened in the original plot!

My brain scrambled to make sense of the warning. Pure instinct screamed at me. I had to find him. Now. I squinted, trying to read the rest of the floating text.

The glowing words glitched, warping like a dead TV screen before vanishing completely. My chest seized. My heart slammed against my ribs. What just happened? Is Callum in danger?

Then it hit me. The smartwatch! Conrad bought him one with a builtin GPS tracker. I ripped my phone out of my pocket. Thank god his location synced to my Family Sharing app.

A pulsing red dot appeared on the map. "Raymond, drive! Follow this pin!" I shoved the screen toward the front seat. The location wasn't far from the school.

It was an abandoned industrial warehouse out in the deep suburbs. Winter had already stripped the trees bare. Raymond hit the gas.

He kept dialing Conrad's cell, but his calls kept getting intercepted by the assistant. Conrad was locked in a board meeting. Unreachable.

Tires crunched over broken gravel as the SUV skidded to a halt outside the rusting warehouse. Raymond cut the engine. His eyes narrowed, scanning the pitchblack exterior.

He unbuckled his seatbelt. "Lock the doors, Teagan. Do not get out." I didn't argue. He acted purely on protective instinct. He slipped out into the darkness. Ice flooded my veins.

My legs started to tremble. I clenched my jaw, fighting the shaking. I couldn't stop. Pure dread crawled up my throat. A massive, suffocating weight crushed my chest. CRASH!

The backseat window exploded. A heavy steel pipe shattered the tempered glass. Jagged shards rained over my lap.

Before a scream could even tear past my lips, a massive, calloused hand lunged through the broken window. Thick fingers twisted violently into my hair. "Look what we have here!

A little bonus prize!" A raw, gravelly voice barked right against my ear. Searing, blinding pain ripped through my scalp.

I thrashed wildly, my hands clawing at the thick wrist locking me down. A heavy palm cracked across my jaw. The brutal slap snapped my head back.

My vision exploded into white static. The metallic taste of blood flooded my mouth. My limbs went numb.

The man dragged my limp body through the shattered window and hauled me straight into the freezing warehouse. My eyes adjusted to the harsh, blinking lights.

My pupils shrank to pinpricks. Thick leather straps pinned Callum to a sterile, stainless steel operating table. Two expressionless men in scrubs stood over him.

Thick IV tubes drained dark red blood from his tiny arm into plastic bags. The terrifying black market headlines I used to scroll past flashed through my mind.

My heart completely stopped. A few feet away, Vanessa stood in a designer trench coat. She watched the needles pierce her son's skin with cold apathy.

She turned to a surprisingly unassuming man.

She flashed a sickeningly sweet smile. "He’s deaf, but his body is perfectly healthy." "This is Conrad’s only male heir." The trafficker didn't even flinch, casually glancing at the bleeding boy. "You sure about this?" Vanessa scoffed.

Pure disgust dripped from her voice. "He’s a deaf, disabled piece of trash. If Conrad actually cared, he wouldn't have let the kid leave with me.

Just make sure the wire transfer hits my account. Don't short me." "Of course." After that brief exchange, a heavy, dead silence fell between them.

The horrific truth struck me like a physical blow. The original plotline was a complete, fabricated lie! Callum didn't end up on the streets because my mom kicked him out.

His own biological mother had sold him to human traffickers! Chapter 7 Callum had been living a lie. The plot didn't just change—it mutated. I thought he was safe.

Instead, his own mother cornered him at school. She fed him some toxic, gaslighting lie. He dropped his guard, completely trusting her. He followed her right into hell.

I forced my eyes toward the metal table. Callum lay completely paralyzed. A single tear cut a track through the grime on his cheek.

His fingernails gouged deep crescent moons into his own palms. A sharp, physical ache ripped through my chest. Three years wasn't nothing.

I actually cared about him. "How could you do this to him?" The raw, trembling voice didn't even sound like mine. What kind of mother sells her own kid?

My voice shattered the heavy silence in the warehouse. Vanessa finally turned her head. Her gaze dragged lazily over to me.

She took in my bloodshot eyes and the dirt smeared across my face.

A flicker of surprise crossed her pristine features before her expression hardened into pure ice. "So, you're Conrad’s new baggage." I held her stare, refusing to blink.

She had that gentle, puttogether look. Soft features, elegant styling. But pure venom dripped from her lips. "I birthed him. I can do whatever the hell I want with him.

I’d worry about your own neck right now, little girl." I watched the needles, my stomach in knots. But they didn't harvest anything else.

They finished draining the blood bags, unbuckled the leather straps, and tossed Callum onto the freezing concrete floor like garbage. The lead trafficker's burner phone buzzed.

He barked an order. The crew packed up and marched out. The massive steel doors slammed shut. The shockwave rattled the dust from the rafters.

My nervous system was completely fried. "Callum," I whispered, my voice shaking. He didn't twitch. I strained my eyes in the dim light. His ears were completely bare.

They took his hearing aids. The room was a dead, silent void to him. No matter how loud I called his name, he couldn't hear me. Sheer panic clawed at my throat.

A few feet away, Callum dragged his bruised body off the floor. His head snapped in my direction. The second his eyes locked onto mine, a violent tremor racked his tiny frame.

He opened his mouth. He desperately tried to force a sound out, but he was too overwhelmed with emotion to speak. I exaggerated my lip movements, praying he could read them. Don't.

Be. Afraid. I had dialed 911 the second Raymond threw the car in park. Backup had to be coming. I forced air into my burning lungs, fighting the urge to completely break down.

Callum stared at my moving lips. His dark eyes flickered with mixed emotions before he lowered his head, hiding his tearful eyes. Faint sirens wailed in the distance.

My heart slammed against my ribs. They’re here. But before relief could even register, the warehouse doors ripped open. The trafficker stormed back in. "You little bitch.

You called the cops!" Lethal rage distorted his face. He locked onto me. He snatched a thick, frayed nylon rope off a nearby crate. He lunged.

The rough fibers violently wrapped around my throat. Air vanished. My hands flew up, desperately clawing at the rope burning into my skin.

My fingernails tore, completely useless against the brute force of a grown man. "TTea…gan! NNo!" A raw, guttural scream ripped through the warehouse.

Callum scrambled across the concrete on his hands and knees. Terror warped his small face.

The trafficker sneered, looking down at the scrambling kid. "Don't blame me when you end up in a body bag. Blame your freak brother." He yanked the rope tight.

My spine arched off the floor. Black spots exploded in my vision. Tears streamed down my face as my lungs screamed for oxygen.

Callum’s shattered, agonizing screams echoed in the background. The sound warped, fading into a muted, underwater distortion. Total darkness swallowed me. Chapter 8
