Preview · Chapter 1

My wife's ragged gasps blasted from the dashcam footage. Her filthy moans with another man echoed through the speakers.

Right now, Monica was on her knees on the hardwood floor, frantically begging for my forgiveness. Our fourteenyearold son, Asher, shoved the bedroom door open.

He shot a look of pure disgust at his sobbing mother on the floor. "Take your trash and get out," he said, his voice dead flat. "Don't dirty our house." Chapter 1 I sat motionless in the driver's seat.

The engine was dead, and the motionsensor lights in the underground garage had already timed out, plunging me into pitch black.

I pulled out my phone and loaded last night's dashcam footage.

Monica's voice came through the speakers, razorsharp in the quiet car. "Not here… let's go to a hotel…" A man's low chuckle tangled with the sound of rustling clothes. I hit pause.

The frame froze on my wife's profile. The shadows cast by her eyelashes couldn't hide the deep, satisfied flush on her cheeks. I locked the screen.

The December chill bit through my coat. The last traces of the heater's warmth had bled out of the cabin a long time ago.

It took exactly twentyeight seconds for the elevator to reach the seventeenth floor. I counted every single one.

As I slid my key into the deadbolt, the clatter of plates drifted from the kitchen. "You're home?" Monica peeked out from the kitchen doorway.

A smear of tomato sauce stained her apron, a spatula gripped in her right hand. "Asher has football practice after school.

We can't pick him up until six." I dropped my briefcase on the entryway console. "I'll pick him up today." She froze for a fraction of a second.

The spatula clanked against the edge of the stove. "…Okay." I walked into my home office and locked the door behind me.

As the desktop booted up, the muffled sound of the TV filtered through the wall—some loud, trashy reality show she always watched. I shoved the dashcam's SD card into the reader.

The latest file was timestamped 9:47 PM last night. One hour and twelve minutes long.

I scrubbed the timeline to the thirtythreeminute mark. "Monica…" the guy panted. "Your husband working late tonight?" Monica's light laugh sawed at me like a rusted blade. "Who cares about him?

That boring workaholic is only good for making money for us to spend." I extracted three separate audio clips. On my messaging app, Ryder's contact card stared back at me.

His profile picture was a shirtless mirror selfie at the gym. I opened Ryder's social media.

His latest post from two hours ago read: [ Thanks to a certain someone for the lunch made with love ] The photo showed a fancy bento box.

In the corner of the frame, half of a manicured nail was visible—the exact same design Monica had dropped two hundred bucks on just yesterday.

A knock rapped against the office door. "Dinner's ready." Monica's voice sounded muffled through the wood. An expensive Tomahawk steak sat in the center of the dining table.

I remembered seeing Ryder post about how much he loved imported cuts like that. "You look pale." Monica slid a piece of asparagus onto my plate. "Are you coming down with something?" I pushed the food around my plate, forcing down a few bites. "I'm going on a business trip tomorrow." Her fork hovered midair over her steak. "For how long?" "Depends." I stared at the ring finger of her left hand.

Her wedding band was gone, leaving only a faint, pale indentation on her skin. "Maybe a week." On the TV, a reality show contestant was screaming about her partner cheating.

Monica abruptly stood up. "I need to fold the laundry." The washing machine rumbled in the laundry room.

I reached across the table and woke up her phone—she hadn't changed the passcode. In her ticketing app, there was a receipt for two VIP passes to a luxury drivein movie theater.

Purchased last Wednesday afternoon. That was the exact same day Monica told me she was taking Asher to the dentist. The shower ran until eleven o'clock.

I lay flat on my back in bed, staring at the ceiling. A hairline crack snaked across the plaster like a centipede.

Monica slipped under the covers, smelling of body wash. "Go to sleep." She curled into a tight ball, her back facing me.

I reached out and clicked on the nightstand lamp. "Who is Ryder?" The comforter jerked.

When Monica rolled over to face me, the color had drained from her lips. "…The new intern at the company." She tugged at her collar, trying to cover the glaring hickey on her neck.

Her eyes darted around the room, refusing to meet mine. "How does it feel, screwing the intern?" I unlocked my phone and tapped the screen.

The filthy moans from the dashcam blasted through the bedroom. Chapter 2 Monica lunged for the phone. The comforter slipped off her shoulders, leaving her pajama top hanging askew.

Right below her collarbone sat a dark, plumcolored bruise. "It's not what you think…" Her nails dug into my wrist.

I ripped my arm out of her grip. "Then what exactly is it?" Monica started to shake.

Heavy tears hit the bedsheets, blooming into dark, wet circles. "It was just this once… I swear…" "What about the movie tickets from last Wednesday?" I swiped to the photo gallery and shoved the picture of the bento box an inch from her face. "Is this a misunderstanding too?" Monica collapsed onto the floor, sobbing.

Her normally meticulously maintained face twisted in pure panic.

Tears carved tracks through her expensive foundation, exposing the fine lines at the corners of her eyes. "I'll cut it off with him right now, I promise I'll never see him again…" I swung my legs out of bed and shoved my feet into my slippers. "My lawyer will send you the divorce papers tomorrow." "No!" Monica scrambled and wrapped her arms around my legs from behind.

Her knees slammed against the hardwood with a loud thud. "Asher is still applying for private high schools… My mom's heart condition… If you dare kick me out, I'll blow this whole thing up!" I pried her fingers off me, one by one. "Did you think about any of that while you were screwing another man?" I yanked the closet door open and grabbed a spare pillow. "I'm dropping Asher off tomorrow." The lock on the guest room door clicked into place.

Through the drywall, Monica's wailing sounded like a strangled cat. I woke up at three in the morning.

The thud of the refrigerator door opening and closing drifted from the kitchen, followed by the clink of glassware. I walked barefoot into the living room.

Monica was crouched on the balcony, her phone pressed to her ear.

The moonlight washed over her bare ankles. "…He found out…" she whispered, her voice dropping to a frantic hiss. "What are we going to do…" I let out a harsh cough.

The line went dead instantly. Monica's phone clattered against the balcony tiles. "I… I was just getting some water…" She scrambled to snatch up the device.

Half of a car key jutted out from her pajama pocket. I turned my back and walked straight to my room. Behind me, her ragged breathing scraped the air like a fish out of water.

By daybreak, rain pelted the windows. I stood in the doorway of the master bedroom.

Monica was sprawled on the bed, still fully dressed, her mascara smeared into dark, raccoon circles around her eyes. Her phone screen lit up on the nightstand.

A lock screen notification popped up: [ Don't panic, baby. I'll handle it. —Ryder ] I pulled the door shut without a sound.

In the kitchen trash can, shredded pieces of the drivein movie tickets rested on top of the garbage.

The topmost scrap read: [ Row 7, Spot 5. ] At exactly seven o'clock, Asher's alarm went off. I heated up a glass of milk.

The blaring sound effects of a mobile game echoed from his room. "Dad?" Asher dragged himself out, his hair a messy bird's nest. "Where's Mom?" "Sleeping." I slid a plate of fried eggs across the counter. "It's raining.

I'll drive you." Asher shrugged. "Whatever." The windshield wipers slashed back and forth across the glass. Asher sat shotgun, AirPods in, hammering his thumbs on his screen.

It wasn't until I turned onto the main avenue that he finally spoke up. "You guys get into a fight?" The light turned red.

I checked the rearview mirror and caught my son staring at me.

He had the exact same eyes Monica did when we first met. "No." "Right." Asher dropped his gaze back to his game. "If you guys split, make sure I get the house." I slammed on the brakes.

The cab behind us leaned on the horn. "Who said anything about a divorce?" "Just a guess." Asher smirked, his eyes dripping with teenage mockery. "The air between you two is about to freeze over.

Plus, that cheap perfume she's been spraying lately makes me want to puke." The dropoff lane at the school was jammed with cars.

Asher hopped out, slammed the door shut with all his weight, and dropped one last line: "Don't let her touch my stuff.

I think it's disgusting." I watched my son jog through the school gates, his hoodie quickly swallowed by the heavy curtain of rain.

The dashboard chimed, flashing a lowfuel warning. I pulled into the nearest gas station. Premium gas surged into the tank.

I was wiping the condensation off the windshield when my phone buzzed in my pocket. A text from Monica: [ We need to talk. ] Chapter 3 I killed the screen.

The gas station's convenience store speakers bled some trashy pop song about breaking up with dignity. Traffic swallowed twenty minutes of my drive back.

Monica was waiting in the living room.

Her makeup was scrubbed clean, and that gold wedding band was firmly back on her finger. "I took the day off." She slid a mug of hot tea across the glass coffee table. "Ryder is just…" I didn't touch the mug. "How many times did you screw him?" Monica twisted her fingers together. "…Three times." "Did you use protection?" All the blood drained from her face. "We used… precautions…" I pulled up the calculator app on my phone. "Based on the current market value, this house with the pool is worth four million dollars.

How much are you planning to pay to buy out my share?" Monica's mug tipped over.

Brown liquid pooled across the glass table like an ugly map. "I don't want a divorce…" "Then what exactly is your plan?" I tapped open my photo gallery. "A threesome?" Monica dropped to her knees.

She threw her arms around my legs, her tears soaking right through my suit trousers. "Give me one more chance…" I gripped her jaw and forced her to look up at me. "You're thirtyfive, Monica, not fifteen." The doorbell chimed.

Monica swiped at her face, smearing her tears. A delivery guy handed over a small cardboard box. The sender's name printed on the label was Ryder. I ripped open the box.

Inside sat a limitededition designer necklace, with a receipt glaringly stamped for twenty thousand dollars. "He insisted on sending it…" Monica's voice trembled, hollow and thin.

I smashed the necklace to pieces right in front of her face, sending diamonds and shattered metal flying across the hardwood. "Tonight, you get the hell out and sleep on the street." "You can't!" Monica grabbed a fistful of my belt. "My mom is flying in this afternoon…" I let out a harsh laugh. "You want her to meet her perfect new soninlaw?" Monica's phone lit up on the floor.

Her lock screen was a sickeningly sweet selfie of her and Ryder. The date stamp was from last Sunday—the exact day she claimed she was slammed with overtime at the office.

I grabbed my briefcase. "Tell your mother the truth, or I will." Before the elevator doors slid shut, I heard Monica screaming something.

But the motionsensor lights flickered out, and the darkness swallowed the rest of her pathetic excuses. The phone on the hotel nightstand blared. I glanced at the caller ID.

The front desk. "Sir, there is a Ms. Monica waiting for you in the lobby." I slammed the receiver down. Outside, the rain had finally stopped.

The glass skyscrapers of the downtown business district reflected a sickly, pale sunlight. My phone showed seventeen unread texts.

The latest was from Asher's homeroom teacher, Cora, attaching his monthly report card. The elevator mirror caught the rough stubble along my jawline.

Monica sat on the lobby sofa, her knuckles white around a coffee cup.

Her eyeliner had bled out into a messy smokey eye. "My mom went to pick up Asher." She bolted upright, knocking her cup over.

Brown liquid rapidly soaked into the expensive lobby carpet. "Can we please go home and talk?" I stepped around the puddle and headed straight for the hotel restaurant. "We talk here." The buffet area was practically empty.

Monica grabbed a slice of melon, slicing it into tiny, frantic pieces on her plate without taking a single bite. "I quit my job." I took a sip of my black coffee.

Ice cold. "Did Ryder quit too?" Her knife screeched against the porcelain plate.

The blue veins on the back of her hand bulged. "He's… he's just an intern…" "A twentyfiveyearold intern?" I pulled up my photo gallery and shoved a screenshot of Ryder's background check straight into her face. "He was working as a broke personal trainer in the city just last year." Monica's fork clattered to the floor.

She bent down to grab it, her hair falling forward to hide her expression. "You investigated him?" I wiped my mouth with a napkin. "For the divorce settlement." "I'm not signing!" Monica's voice suddenly spiked, shrieking like a cornered banshee, drawing stares from everyone at the neighboring tables. "You emotionless cash machine!

You neglected me first!" I slid the divorce papers across the table. "Sign the damn papers and call my lawyer, Hayes." Chapter 4 Monica started to shake.

Her nails dug into the divorce papers, leaving crescentmoon creases on the asset division page. "You get the house, and I get the savings?" "Every single cent you secretly transferred to your mother's account, I'm taking it all back." I swiped open my mobile banking app. "The two hundred and eighty thousand dollars you wired her last March?

I've already pulled the full transaction logs." All the blood drained from Monica's face.

Her lips moved silently for a second before she grabbed my wrist. "He seduced me… I had too much to drink at that company retreat…" I ripped my arm away. "Were you blackout drunk the second and third time, too?" The glass doors of the restaurant swung open.

A hotel security guard in a dark blue uniform marched over. "Do you folks need any assistance?" Monica scrubbed at her tears.

Her expensive foundation was a smeared mess, and one of her false eyelashes was peeling off, making her look like a mangy stray cat. "My husband is just having some chest pain…" I stood up and threw a hundreddollar bill on the table.

As she chased me to the revolving doors, Monica's stiletto twisted.

She limped after me, desperately grabbing the hem of my suit jacket. "Give me a week… just one week…" "Go beg your little toyboy." I flagged down a passing cab. "I'm sure he's desperate for a thirtyfiveyearold sugar mama to fund his pathetic life." In the rearview mirror, Monica was sobbing on the curb.

The cab driver threw me a glance. "Lover's spat?" I ignored him. My phone buzzed. A multimedia message from an unknown number—a selfie of Monica and Ryder tangled up in a hotel bed.

The timestamp was from yesterday afternoon. [ Slut. ] I saved the image.

A text from Hayes, my lawyer, popped up: [ We have a solid shot at full custody, but we're going to need a statement of preference from Asher. ] The luxury mall was packed.

I bought a highend digital voice recorder from an electronics boutique.

While testing the playback, I overheard the sales reps chattering about Valentine's Day gifts. "Would you like that engraved, sir?" I shook my head.

The display glass reflected my own face—tight, cold, and utterly ruthless. At four o'clock, my motherinlaw called.

I watched her name flash on the screen for ten full seconds before swiping to answer. "Asher is with me." The old woman's voice was laced with ice. "Don't drag the kid into whatever mess you two have created." I pushed open the heavy doors to the mall's emergency stairwell. "What exactly did Monica tell you?" "Do you think you're justified for ignoring your family for six months?" My motherinlaw's voice spiked. "Monica has been crying herself to sleep every single night…" In the background, I could hear Asher cursing at his video game.

I pressed the record button on my new device. "Did you know Monica is sleeping with another man?" Dead silence on the other end.

A few seconds later, the old woman let out a stiff cough. "…A man should prioritize his career." I hung up.

The sickly green glow of the exit sign washed over my phone screen as a new email pinged. Ryder's hotel booking history.

The most recent checkin was 9:00 AM this morning at The Four Seasons. I forwarded the location screenshot straight to Monica.

The typing bubble flashed on my screen for three agonizing minutes.

Finally, a voice note came through, backed by the blaring of traffic: "I'm at the hospital… My mom's blood pressure spiked…" I replied with a surveillance still of Ryder walking into the hotel lobby.

Monica's typing bubble danced for a long time before she sent four final words: [ I'll end it tonight. ] Chapter 5 The evening rush at the city's general hospital was always a chaotic nightmare.

When I found my motherinlaw in the ER, the old woman was hooked up to an IV, aggressively chewing out a nurse. "Dad!" Asher bounced up from a cheap plastic chair, his phone screen still blazing with a mobile game. "Grandma forced me to come…" My motherinlaw violently yanked her grandson back.

Her puffy eyelids drooped, and blood backed up into her IV tube from the sudden jerk. "What are you doing here?

Where is Monica?" I glanced deadpan at the IV bag. "You don't have high blood pressure." "You wish I was dead!" The old woman suddenly ripped the needle out of her vein.

Beads of blood splattered onto Asher's school hoodie. "My daughter has been with you for ten years…" People at the nurses' station were staring.

Asher shrank back, hiding behind my shoulders. "Grandma is psycho…" I pulled out my car keys. "Go wait in the car." The old woman's shrieking was drawing a crowd.

I bent down and picked up the dangling IV tube. "Do you want to see the hotel records for Monica and Ryder?" Her cursing instantly flatlined.

Her eyes bulged like a choked fish. "…What Ryder?" "A twentyfiveyearold broke personal trainer." I pulled up his photo and shoved my phone right into her face. "Your daughter, desperate to be his sugar mama, swiped my credit card to buy him three Rolexes!" The old woman suddenly snatched my phone and smashed it onto the linoleum floor.

The tempered glass screen protector cracked into a spiderweb, but the recording app was still running in the background. "Get out!" Her chest heaved violently. "My daughter would never…" I picked up my phone. "Room 1807 at The Four Seasons.

If you go right now, you can catch them in bed together." The blood pressure monitor strapped to her arm started shrieking.

By the time the nurses rushed over, I was already walking out of the ER doors. In the parking lot, Asher was kicking the front tire of my SUV.

When he saw me, he instantly stood up straight. "Is Mom actually cheating?" I unlocked the doors. "Are you hungry?" "I freaking knew it!" Asher slid into the passenger seat and slammed the door with all his might. "She randomly started caking on makeup last month… and kept hiding on the balcony to make phone calls…" I blasted the AC.

The hot air pouring from the vents smelled like dust. "Do you want to go to my mom's or stay with yours?" Asher bit the back of his hand and went silent.

The GPS displayed a dark crimson line toward the suburbs.

Traffic was gridlocked. "I want to stay with you," Asher said suddenly. "They're all annoying as hell." The neon lights on the overpass flickered to life.

I checked the rearview mirror.

My son was staring at his phone, Monica's chat window open on the screen. "Don't tell her where we are." Asher smirked. "I blocked her an hour ago." The Four Seasons was just five hundred yards ahead.

I jerked the steering wheel, the tires thumping heavily over a speed bump. "Dad, you missed the turn." Asher looked up from his screen. "We're supposed to take a right to get to Grandma's…" I pulled over right across the street from the luxury hotel.

I dialed Monica's number. It rang seven times before she finally picked up.

The rushing sound of a shower echoed in the background. "…Hello?" Monica's voice was thin and hollow. "How is my mom?" I stared straight up at a lit window on the eighteenth floor. "Taking a shower?" A glass shattered on the other end of the line.

Then came a frantic rustling, like she had clamped her hand over the microphone. "…In the hospital bathroom." I hung up.

Asher was practically glued to the window, staring at the hotel. "Dad, are you here to catch them redhanded?" "We're going home." I whipped the car around and merged onto the main avenue.

Video game sound effects blared from the passenger seat, mixing with my son's muttered insult: "Coward." The house was pitch black.

I opened the fridge and realized yesterday's expensive leftover steak was completely gone.

Asher marched straight into his bedroom, slamming the door so hard the living room chandelier shook. Chapter 6 A long strand of hair clogged the bathroom drain.

I pinched it and held it up to the harsh vanity light. The ends were a distinct reddishbrown—the exact shade of the expensive brunette dye Monica had gotten just last week.

The bedsheets in the master bedroom had been changed. I flipped the pillow over.

A sticky note was flattened underneath: [ Please, give me one more chance. —Monica. ] The ink was violently smudged with water stains. Crocodile tears.

I ripped open the walkin closet doors. Monica's favorite cashmere coat was gone, but her lingerie drawer was practically untouched. I dug to the very bottom layer.

A blister pack of birth control pills was stashed underneath. An entire row had been popped out. The expiration date stamped on the foil was from last October.

My phone screen flared to life. A friend request popped up on my social app from Ryder. The attached message read: [ Let's talk terms. ] I hit accept.

The guy instantly launched an audio call.

The heavy clanking of gym equipment and iron plates echoed in the background. "Hey bro, don't make things hard for Monica," Ryder panted heavily, sounding like he had just finished a set of bench presses. "She's actually in love with me." I jabbed the record button. "How does it feel, screwing another man's wife?" "Fuck man!" Ryder let out a cocky, breathless laugh. "Your wife has this little mole right on her…" I took a screenshot of the call log and hung up.

A second later, he texted over a short video file. The camera was pointed at a luxury hotel vanity mirror.

Monica was wrapped in a plush white towel, carefully applying her lipstick.

A voice note followed. "She's right here next to me," Ryder whispered. "Want to hear how loud she screams?" I ignored him.

A new message from my lawyer, Hayes, dropped in: [ For the custody battle, I need everyday photos of Asher. As many as possible. ] I scrolled through my camera roll.

The most recent picture was from Asher's parentteacher conference three months ago. When I dug into the cloud backups from last year, I found a massive empty gap.

Monica had deleted every single family photo. The lock on my home office desk drawer had been violently jimmied open.

Our marriage certificate was still sitting there, but the property deed to the house was gone. I booted up the desktop.

Thankfully, highres scans of all my legal documents were locked safely in my encrypted cloud drive. The printer was buzzing out fresh copies when the front doorbell chimed.

On the security camera feed, Monica looked like a total wreck. Her hair was a tangled mess, her makeup completely smeared.

She was frantically jamming her thumb against the smart lock scanner I had just wiped her prints from. "Alistair!" She hammered her fists against the heavy oak door. "I know you're in there…" I calmly fed another stack of paper into the printer tray.

Monica started kicking the door with her heels.

The booming thuds were so loud the neighbor across the hall peeked their head out. "Dad!" Asher yanked his bedroom door open. "Can you tell her to get the hell out of here?" I walked to the entryway.

Through the peephole, I watched Monica digging through her purse for a physical key.

There was a dark, raw red ring wrapped around her wrist—it looked exactly like the mark left behind by a leather belt. "Just call the cops," Asher said, violently gnawing on his thumbnail. "Tell them some crazy lady is trespassing." I unlatched the deadbolt and pulled the door open.

Monica stumbled inside, reeking of cheap alcohol and heavy perfume. "Asher!" She lunged to hug our son, but he recoiled out of her reach. "Disgusting." Asher backed straight into his bedroom and locked the door with a loud click.

Monica collapsed onto the entryway floor.

Her expensive sheer tights were torn, and raw scrapes beaded with blood across her knees. "I cut him off… I really did…" I shoved my phone screen in her face, playing the hotel video Ryder had just sent me. "Very thorough." All the blood drained from Monica's face.

She clawed at my phone.

Half of one of her acrylic nails snapped clean off. "He… he forced me to film that…" "Did he force you the other three times, too?" I tapped the dashcam audio file.

Her own filthy moans blasted through the living room speakers. Monica crawled on the floor like a dog and desperately wrapped her arms around my leather dress shoes.

She frantically slammed her forehead against the hard marble tiles. "I made a mistake… I was just tricked by him… Please, I'm begging you, don't freeze my supplementary credit cards…" I grabbed a fistful of her collar and hauled her up. "Where is the property deed?" "It's… it's at my mom's house…" A thin trail of blood leaked from the corner of Monica's mouth. "She said I needed leverage against you…" I released my grip.

Monica slid back down to the floor like a broken ragdoll. Her phone slipped out of her pocket. The screen lit up on the marble, flashing a missed call from Ryder.

Chapter 7 "Take your trash and get out of my house." I threw her designer bag out the door like a piece of garbage. "I've already notified neighborhood security.

If you dare take half a step back onto this property, I will shoot you or have the cops drag you away for trespassing." Monica crawled forward and frantically clung to my calves. "Please don't kick me out…" Snot and tears smeared all over her face. "I have nowhere else to go…" I pried her fingers off me, one by one. "Room 1807 at The Four Seasons." The heavy door of the apartment across the hall slammed shut.

The tears instantly vanished from Monica's face.

She used the shoe cabinet to pull herself up and violently wiped her cheeks. "Fine, we'll divorce." Her voice turned dead flat. "I get full custody of Asher, and we split the house fiftyfifty." I let out a harsh laugh. "Do you know how many years you get for bigamy?" Monica's pupils blew wide. "…What bigamy?" "Ryder's wife reached out to me." I flashed the chat logs on my phone screen. "She lives in Manhattan.

Sent me highres photos of their marriage certificate and everything." Monica's legs gave out, her knees smashing against the hardwood.

Her phone started vibrating frantically against the floorboards. The caller ID flashed
