There was a man who worshipped the very ground I walked on. If I tripped and scraped my knee, he would have ripped up every concrete sidewalk in the city just to keep me safe.
Instead, I married Tristan, the boy I’d known since we were kids. When his startup crashed and burned, I took our daughter, Thea, and swallowed my pride.
I scrubbed greasy diner plates until my knuckles bled during the day, and dug through filthy dumpsters for recyclables by night, breaking my own back just to fund his comeback.
His repayment? To win a smile from his old high school obsession, he put a price tag on my head. He ordered me to go entertain the most ruthless corporate shark in his network.
Tristan expected me to snap. He waited for me to scream, to fight, to guard my pride like my life depended on it. He was dead wrong.
Without missing a beat, I flashed my sweetest, most pliable smile and slid directly into the billionaire's waiting arms. Chapter 1 The words simply didn't compute.
Ten years of marriage, and my husband was selling me out with a straight face.
Before my brain could even catch up to the sheer toxicity of it, Tristan shoved me toward a man who reeked of old money and absolute authority.
Tristan’s hand clamped down hard on my shoulder, physically trapping me there as he flashed a sickeningly eager smile at the billionaire. "Sebastian.
If I remember correctly, my wife, Audrey, is exactly your type." Heavy, predatory stares immediately locked onto me. My knees knocked together.
I swallowed around the giant lump in my throat, forcing the words out through the trembling of my own jaw. "Tristan," I choked out, my voice barely above a whisper. "Thea is burning up with a fever.
Can you… can you just come to the hospital with me?" My plea cracked in the middle. It bought me exactly zero sympathy.
A ripple of dark laughter echoed through the VIP lounge. "Well, Tristan," a voice sneered from the leather sofas. "Didn't know you had the juice to make a woman beg on her knees.
I underestimated you." Another chimed in. "Your wife is quite a looker.
Sure you want to just toss her away?" Tristan cut his eyes toward me, his upper lip curling in pure disgust. "I’ve been trying to divorce her for months.
She keeps using the kid as leverage, threatening to off herself every other day." He tapped his fingers on the glass table. "Just remember the deal.
You guys funnel those contracts to that sales rep, Sierra." The absolute zero temperature in his voice crushed the last brittle pieces of my pride.
Amidst the rising jeers and laughter, I bit down on my lower lip hard enough to taste copper, my eyes burning like I’d swallowed a mouthful of ash. A second later.
The man they called Sebastian stepped directly into my personal space. "She is my type," he stated, his voice a low, heavy rumble. "I'll sign the papers with Sierra.
But you file for divorce immediately.
Audrey belongs to me now." Without waiting for permission, a heavy arm wrapped like a steel band around my waist, yanking me flush against a solid chest.
His lips brushed my forehead. The scalding heat of his breath, laced with topshelf tequila, made my pulse jump in my throat.
Through my peripheral vision, I caught Tristan practically vibrating with excitement at his successful transaction. He was eagerly offering me up like a cheap party favor.
The realization was a bucket of ice water. This man… was I seriously still destroying myself to hold onto him? A switch flipped inside my head.
I stopped fighting the iron grip on my waist.
Instead, I melted my spine, tilting my chin up and sinking perfectly into Sebastian's hold. "Honestly, I've been looking to upgrade my daughter's father for a while now," I purred, coating my voice in sugar. "It's a lucky break meeting you, Sebastian.
We must be fated. I'll make sure you don't regret this tonight." The cheap, dirty words slid smoothly off my tongue, even as a tremor shook my frame.
I forced my head back, swallowing down the acid in my throat, blinking away the blur. That’s when I met Sebastian's gaze. There was no mockery there.
Just a raw, sharp flash of pure heartache staring right back at me.
The aggressive, cedarandmusk scent of him wrapped around me, making the ground tilt beneath my feet for a fraction of a second.
The lounge went dead silent, then exploded into hoots and applause. Through the noise, Tristan just stared at me, his jaw set in a line of bored impatience from start to finish.
A dull, heavy ache settled deep in my ribcage, radiating outward. As far back as my memory went, I was the punchline to the same neighborhood joke—Tristan’s little wifeintraining.
We grew up joined at the hip. The adults thought it was hilarious.
But Tristan used to turn beetred, shoving handfuls of candy into my palms and shouting at anyone who would listen, "When I grow up, Audrey is going to be my wife!" Who would have guessed the joke would become reality.
He took the reins of his family’s business. I got pregnant, had Thea, and slid perfectly into the role of the happy stayathome mom.
When his schedule blew up, I spent hours mealprepping, handdelivering hot lunches to his corner office every single day.
When the stress ground him down, I took on a hundred percent of the parenting.
I even took physical therapy courses online, just so I could work the knots out of his shoulders and give him ten minutes of peace.
Chapter 2 Even when his family's company nosedived into Chapter 11 bankruptcy, I stayed anchored to his side.
I pulled double shifts at two different jobs and spent my nights quietly digging through dumpsters just to keep the lights on.
Thea, my sweet girl, absorbed every ounce of that hardship right alongside me. "I don't care, Mom," she'd tell me. "As long as I'm helping you, I can take it." But the night Tristan caught me and our daughter at the recycling center?
He was holding Sierra’s hand.
He looked right through me, his face a mask of utter apathy. "You're filthy," he muttered. "You're a goddamn embarrassment." And Sierra, weaponizing his blatant favoritism, just sneered at me. "If he hadn't married a walking curse like you, Tristan never would have gone under.
You're toxic.
If I were you, I would have grabbed my little baggage and disappeared by now." Those words didn't just hurt; they drove invisible splinters under my fingernails, leaving a permanent, throbbing ache every time I drew breath.
I shrank myself down. I made myself smaller, quieter, more pathetic around him.
And in return, he stopped hiding his disgust. "Look at yourself," he'd spit. "If you hadn't clung to me like a parasite, you never would have deserved this ring.
You forced my parents' hands." "You tore Sierra and me apart, and I will never, ever forgive you for it." My brain had spent years refusing to process how the boy I’d bled dry for had mutated into this stranger.
Yet, pressed flush against Sebastian’s chest, a bizarre, heavy sense of safety settled over my shaking shoulders.
Sebastian shifted his weight, preparing to haul me out of that room. Then, Tristan’s voice scraped through the air, forced and tight. "Sebastian, wait. Audrey is… she's washed up.
She's already had a kid." Tristan cleared his throat. "Let me swap her out for someone else. I'd hate for her to ruin your mood tonight." A cold, sharp ringing started in my ears.
Pimping me out wasn't enough; he had to stripmine my dignity in front of an audience, too. "Tristan," I choked out, my vocal cords grinding together. "You really are just absolute trash." A low vibration of a laugh rumbled through Sebastian’s chest.
The arm around my waist tightened, locking me securely against his side. "I disagree. I think Audrey is in her absolute prime.
She's exactly what I want, and if she's choosing me tonight, the honor is entirely mine." Sebastian didn't even bother looking at Tristan. "My legal team will contact you.
They'll draft the divorce papers.
All you have to do is sign on the dotted line." Sebastian tilted his chin down, catching my eye with a dark, calculating glint. "As for what I do with your exwife behind closed doors, that is none of your damn business." Tristan’s face completely hardened, his eyes narrowing into two dangerous, threatening slits aimed right at my neck.
The oxygen sucked right out of the room. Ignoring the rising whispers, Sebastian turned and strode toward the exit, carrying me along with him.
He yanked the heavy door open, only to hit a roadblock. Sierra.
She was standing dead center in the doorway, poured into a skintight bandage dress that left nothing to the imagination. "I'm the one who needs the contracts signed, not Audrey." She looked between the two men, letting a pathetic, shimmering tear well up in her big eyes. "Sebastian, Tristan… why don't you just swap me in for Audrey?
I'd be more than happy to entertain—" Sebastian didn't even blink.
He let his gaze drag over her once, dripping with absolute contempt. "You want to swap in for Audrey?" He stepped past her. "You don't qualify." Sierra froze, her fake, pitiful expression cementing into sheer humiliation.
Sebastian didn't spare her another fraction of a second. He marched me straight out of the building and shoved me into the passenger seat of his waiting car.
Chapter 3 The moment the heavy car doors clicked shut, he gently deposited me on the plush leather seat and immediately put a respectful distance between us.
Before I could even register the chill of the night air, he stripped off his tailored suit jacket and draped the heavy, warm fabric over my shaking shoulders.
I pulled my knees up, burying my nose in the expensive wool to ground myself, only to realize that the sharp, clean line of his jaw looked impossibly familiar in the dim streetlights. "Sebastian… do I actually know you from somewhere?" He turned his head, a slow, knowing smile curving his lips. "Audrey.
Did you really forget the guy who spent his entire senior year chasing you around campus?" A decadeold memory of a brighteyed upperclassman flashed through my mind.
Back then, I was just a naive freshman crashing headfirst into every obstacle college had to offer, completely out of my depth.
Sebastian was the one who patiently pulled me into all the right campus organizations, introduced me to my entire friend group, and essentially kept me from drowning in my own anxiety.
We graduated, went our separate ways into the real world, and completely lost touch with each other.
And now, out of all the possible reunions in the universe, he had to see me at my absolute lowest, stripped of every ounce of my dignity. "It's really you?" Shock temporarily overrode my sheer exhaustion, and I pushed the heavy jacket aside, leaning into his personal space to get a better look at his face.
But the second the passing headlights caught the faint, dusty pink spreading across the very tips of his ears, a sudden, entirely unfamiliar heat rushed straight to my own cheeks.
Just like I remembered from our college days, Sebastian didn't miss a single beat, smoothly signaling his private driver to pull out into the city traffic before turning his undivided attention back to me. "My legal team is drafting your divorce papers as we speak, so you will have the physical documents in your hands ready to sign by tonight." I just stared at him, my exhausted brain lagging far behind his rapidfire efficiency.
He cleared his throat, shifting his broad shoulders slightly against the leather seat. "If you trust me enough to handle this… I promise I won't let you walk away from that marriage emptyhanded." "Of course I trust you." The sheer, overwhelming relief of recognizing a safe harbor in the middle of this nightmare finally shattered the very last of my defensive walls.
With the toxic adrenaline rapidly leaving my system, a suffocating wave of delayed terror and bonedeep exhaustion washed over me, burning the backs of my eyes.
I swiped clumsily at the dampness pooling on my cheeks, my vocal cords betraying me with a pathetic, wavering tremor. "I got so incredibly lucky running into you tonight, Sebastian, because if you hadn't been there, I don't even want to think about what he would have forced me to do…" Sebastian watched me in complete, heavy silence for a long moment before reaching out, his warm thumb gently and deliberately brushing a stray tear from my jawline. "How is it that you still manage to get yourself into these absolute messes, Audrey?" He wasn't wrong, because it was the exact same pathetic story back in college, like that one time Tristan picked a massive, screaming fight and just drove off, leaving me completely stranded on the sidewalk in a torrential downpour.
It was Sebastian who had quietly appeared out of nowhere with a massive umbrella, meticulously drying my drenched hair and tearstreaked face with his own towel without asking for a single explanation.
The memory felt like a physical ache in my chest, making my vision blur completely as I dropped my head forward to hide my crumbling composure.
Without uttering a single word, Sebastian simply reached out and wrapped his arms around me, pulling my entire weight into the solid, radiating heat of his chest.
The overwhelming cocktail of mental exhaustion and phantom, bonedeep aches finally dragged me under, and I passed out against him to the steady, rhythmic thud of his heartbeat.
The next time I forced my heavy eyelids open, small, incredibly eager hands were shaking my shoulder. "Mom!
You're awake!" "Sebastian took me straight to the emergency room and sat with me the whole time I got my IV fluids!
Then he brought me to this giant house, and we had the best steak ever, and he bought me all these beautiful new clothes and toys!" Thea's terrifying fever was completely gone, leaving her cheeks a healthy, glowing pink as she twirled around the massive, sunlit bedroom to show off a ridiculously expensivelooking designer dress.
I sat up against the plush headboard, my brain struggling to process the sheer luxury of the silk sheets and the warm sunlight pouring through the windows just as Sebastian pushed the heavy mahogany door open. "I figured you would panic the second you woke up without her, so I had my security team bring her over," he said, leaning casually against the doorframe with a soft, relaxed posture. "I have to admit, your daughter is incredibly bright, and she wasn't scared of me in the slightest." I had no idea what kind of magic he had worked, because Thea, who usually hid behind my legs whenever a stranger looked at her, launched herself directly into his waiting arms. "Thank you for taking care of my mom, Sebastian!
I can wash all your dirty dishes for you to pay you back!
I'm super good at washing dishes!" Her innocent, eager offer made the relaxed lines of Sebastian's face instantly pull into a tight, dark frown.
I let out a heavy, wavering sigh, smoothing my hands over the incredibly soft duvet as I tried to explain our brutal reality to him. "After Tristan's company went under, I had to pick up whatever grueling shifts I could find to keep us afloat, and my sweet girl was so terrified of seeing me exhausted that she insisted on shadowing me everywhere just to share the burden.
We spent our daylight hours scrubbing thick grease off plates at a local diner and our nights dragging heavy bags of recycling to the scrap yard just to make rent, yet she never complained a single time, leaving me with this crushing guilt that I had completely failed her." Sebastian didn't offer any empty platitudes or pitying looks, simply scooping Thea up to settle her securely against his chest with an unwavering, absolute gentleness.
He brushed a soft strand of hair out of her eyes, his voice a low, soothing rumble as he asked, "How about I be your dad from now on?" Chapter 4 I stared up at Sebastian, a strange, warm flutter taking root right behind my ribs. "Sebastian, you were the guy on campus everyone revolved around.
You had girls lining up just to get a word in," I murmured, leaning back against the plush pillows. "And now you practically own this city.
I'm already incredibly grateful that you pulled me out of that room today, but why would you…" Sebastian’s gaze softened, the absolute focus in his dark eyes making my breath catch. "Back in college, if you hadn't already been completely wrapped up with Tristan… the husband standing next to you all these years would have been me." I never knew.
All those years, he had quietly drawn a line in the sand, burying his own feelings just to respect my relationship.
It was wild to think that after a decade of radio silence, hitting absolute rock bottom was the exact thing that finally threw us back together.
When he slid the freshly printed divorce settlement across the duvet, I didn't even bother reading the terms. I just uncapped the pen and signed my name on the dotted line.
For the first time all night, the perpetually composed billionaire actually looked shocked.
I ducked my head, a genuine smile curving my lips. "I trust you to have my back." Thea clapped her hands, practically vibrating with joy. "We don't need that mean man who always made you cry anymore, Mom!" To back up my daughter's declaration, Sebastian had his staff flip two massive guest suites in his estate into completely custom bedrooms for us before the sun even set.
The closets were already stuffed with brandnew clothes, the bathrooms stocked with highend skincare.
Even the estate staff, clearly taking a direct cue from Sebastian, seamlessly started treating me like the lady of the house.
Every time their sheer level of respect made my face heat up, the housekeeper would just offer a knowing smile. "The boss has never brought a woman to this estate before.
He must care for you deeply, ma'am." Another staff member chimed in. "I've worked here for twelve years, and I've never seen him go to these lengths for anyone." Thea didn't have to shadow me through the dirt and grime anymore; overnight, she transformed back into a carefree, radiant little girl.
Wrapped in the quiet luxury of the estate, the suffocating trauma Tristan had buried me under slowly began to thaw, replaced by the steady, quiet warmth of being genuinely cared for.
The ironic part was, the second I signed those divorce papers, Tristan’s name started blowing up my phone.
The man who wouldn't bother speaking to me for weeks on end was suddenly turning the city upside down looking for me like a complete lunatic.
Sebastian, completely unwilling to let Tristan disturb our peace, simply had his security team block all incoming contact from him.
The next time I actually saw Tristan in the flesh, it was at the courthouse to finalize the divorce.
He was physically holding Sierra’s hand, but his eyes were locked entirely on me, dark and volatile. "Audrey, are you seriously sleeping with Sebastian?" His gaze dragged over my glowing complexion and the obvious upgrade in my wardrobe, the muscles in his jaw ticking wildly. "Are you that desperate for attention?
You just throw yourself at the first guy who looks your way? You're my wife, damn it.
You're Thea's mother!" "Just because his bank account is bigger than mine, you spread your legs for him?
Audrey, I never realized you were such a shallow gold digger!" His face was completely contorted, the viciousness in his words bordering on unhinged.
I couldn't even begin to fathom where this sudden, rabid jealousy was coming from, so I simply kept my tone completely flat and objective. "Tristan, you've been dying to divorce me for months.
I'm finally stepping out of the picture and handing you over to Sierra on a silver platter. You should be thrilled." But there wasn't a single trace of joy on his face.
He actually ripped his hand out of Sierra’s grip, closing the distance between us and clamping his fingers painfully around my wrist. "You swore to me I was the only man you'd ever be with," he demanded, his breath hot against my face. "How did you end up in Sebastian's bed so fast?" Sierra grabbed his arm, her face flushed with furious humiliation, but he violently shoved her off. "Tristan, the papers are signed.
Let go of me." I twisted my wrist against his bruising grip, right as Sebastian strode out of the courthouse hallway, holding Thea securely against his broad chest.
Chapter 5 Tristan noticed him a second before I did. His eyes locked onto the sight of Thea with her small arms wrapped tightly around Sebastian’s neck.
They looked completely relaxed, leaning into each other with the effortless, comfortable intimacy of a real father and daughter.
Tristan’s eyes flooded with bloodshot rage. "Sebastian! You can have literally any woman on the planet!
Why the hell do you have to steal mine?" His voice cracked, echoing loudly down the courthouse hallway. "Stealing my wife isn't enough for you?
Now you're trying to take my kid, too? That's my blood running through Thea’s veins!
You can throw all the money in the world at her, but she's never going to be yours!" Tristan’s frantic, desperate attempt to mark his territory made Sierra shrink back, her face burning with public humiliation.
But Tristan ignored her completely. His face completely contorted, he actually forced his knee down onto the hard tile directly in front of Sebastian.
He yanked a folded copy of the divorce settlement out of his suit pocket and violently ripped it in half, then into quarters, letting the shredded paper snow onto the floor. "I don't want a divorce.
Give Audrey and Thea back to me. Please." A muscle ticked violently in Sebastian's jaw, a dark, dangerous storm gathering in his eyes. Thea scrambled right out of his arms.
In front of a lobby full of staring strangers, my tiny daughter marched right up to the grown man kneeling on the floor.
She pulled her arm back and slapped Tristan directly across the cheek as hard as she physically could. "You're a jerk!
You don't even deserve to look at my dad!" The sharp, stinging smack echoed off the marble walls. All the oxygen instantly vanished from the hallway.
Even my heart hammered frantically against my ribs, terrified of what Tristan might do to her
