On the night of my birthday, my husband texted me. His mother was severely ill. He wouldn't make it home.
A second later, I refreshed my Instagram feed and saw his assistant’s new post. "Stranded in this massive storm!
So lucky my boss drove his Maybach to drop me off!" The attached photo showed my husband chilling in her cramped apartment, leisurely sipping coffee. I didn't scream or throw a fit.
I doubletapped the photo and left a like. The next morning, I had HR deliver his new reality check. Stripped of his Vice President title. Demoted to a fulltime chauffeur.
His assignment? Safely drive one thousand employees home. Chapter 1 My phone screen cast a harsh, white glare in the dim living room.
Sebastian's text sat at the bottom of our chat. "Mom suddenly fell ill. I have to drive upstate immediately to take care of her. Probably won't make it back tonight.
I owe you for your birthday.
I’ll make it up to you double when I get back." I typed out two words and hit send. "Drive safe." His mother, Susan, just had her annual comprehensive physical at a private clinic last week.
Perfect blood pressure. Perfect blood sugar. Her chronic joint pain hadn't flared up in months. I didn't call him out on the lie. Only a single lamp burned next to the sofa.
A lavish dinner for two sat untouched on the long dining table—the dinner Sebastian had specifically preordered a week ago for my birthday. The ice in my water glass had melted.
I swiped down on my phone. The first post on my feed belonged to Skylar, his assistant. Posted three minutes ago. "Stranded in this massive storm!
So lucky my boss drove his Maybach to drop me off!" Two photos accompanied the caption. The first was shot from the passenger seat of a Maybach.
It captured the steering wheel logo and a man's hand resting casually at the top. I recognized that hand. The platinum wedding band glinted on his ring finger.
The second photo showed a tiny studio apartment living room. Sebastian leaned back in a cheap beige armchair, a coffee mug in hand.
His profile faced the camera, looking completely at ease. I stared at the screen. One second. Two seconds. Three. I doubletapped the screen. A tiny red heart popped up.
Then, I opened a new chat and fired off two texts to Clark, our HR Director. "Effective immediately. Strip Sebastian of all Vice President duties.
Demote him to fulltime company chauffeur. Job requirement: He must safely drive one thousand employees home after work.
If he falls short by even one person, he fails." Clark’s reply blinked onto the screen seconds later. "Understood, Margot." I locked my phone and slammed it facedown onto the leather sofa.
I didn't look at it again. Miles away, inside Skylar’s studio apartment, Sebastian set his coffee mug on the flimsy coffee table. His phone vibrated.
He furrowed his brows, swiping to answer. His tone was still somewhat casual. "Clark?
What do you want this late?" "Sebastian," Clark’s voice came through, cool and strictly professional. "I just received a toplevel directive from the board.
Effective immediately, you are stripped of all Vice President titles. You are reassigned as a fulltime company chauffeur." The smug smile vanished from Sebastian’s face.
He gripped the phone. "Excuse me?
Do you have any idea who you’re talking to?" "I am fully aware," Clark replied. "Your new role requires you to drive company fleet vehicles and safely transport employees home.
You must hit a quota of one thousand employees. Miss it by a single person, and you will never see your old office again." The line went dead. Chapter 2 Sebastian froze.
He knew the corporate hierarchy better than anyone. Only one person had the power to strip his VP title with a single sentence, bypassing the board. His wife.
The blood drained from his face. Margot knew. He yanked open Instagram. There it was. Right beneath Skylar’s post. Margot’s profile picture sitting at the very top of the likes.
He whipped his head toward Skylar, his features twisting into a dark scowl. "What the hell is this? Who told you to post that? Delete it. Now." Skylar flinched.
Her eyes widened, instantly brimming with unshed tears. "Sebastian, I swear I didn't mean anything by it… I was just so grateful you saved me from the storm.
I didn't know it would blow up like this. This is all my fault.
I'm so stupid…" She kept her head bowed, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper. "I just thought… you're different now. You outgrew her shadow a long time ago.
You shouldn't have to walk on eggshells around her anymore." His heart softened instantly, his rage dissipating. "Forget it. It's not your fault.
I was careless." Skylar looked up, letting a single, perfect tear slip down her cheek. "You should go back. Don't let her tear you down over me.
I… I don't want to be a burden." Guilt twisted in Sebastian's gut. "Just stay here. Don't overthink it.
I'll go handle it and be right back." He grabbed his keys and bolted out the door. He floored the Maybach through the pouring rain, cutting a twentyminute drive down to ten.
The front door clicked open. I stayed planted on the leather sofa, staring at the flat screen. Heavy, rushed footsteps approached.
They stopped a few feet behind me, accompanied by heavy panting. I didn't turn around. My thumb rhythmically pressed the remote, mindlessly flipping through channels.
The man behind me didn't dare take another step. He didn't dare breathe too loudly. He knew exactly why he possessed his luxury cars and custom suits. Me.
He was just a freshoutofcollege intern when I plucked him from obscurity. I had built the empire. I had dragged him up the corporate ladder to the VP suite.
The shares in his portfolio? A wedding gift from me. Every ounce of his arrogance and power stemmed directly from my bank account. A heavy thud echoed through the living room.
Flesh and bone slamming against the hardwood. Sebastian had dropped to his knees. I hit the power button on the remote. The TV faded to black. I slowly turned around.
He was drenched. Rainwater dripped from his plastered hair onto his ruined, mudsplattered designer suit. He ducked his head lower, his voice trembling. "Margot, I messed up.
I'm so sorry. Please don't be mad. I shouldn't have lied to you. I lost my mind for a second. It didn't mean anything. Skylar lives so far away.
She couldn't get an Uber in the storm and the office was totally empty. It wasn't safe for a young girl out there. I just gave her a lift.
When we got to her building, she insisted I come up for a quick coffee to warm up. I couldn't say no. I was there for exactly ten minutes. Exactly ten minutes.
I didn't touch her, Margot, I swear to God. You have to believe me." Chapter 3 I stared at him. Ice cold.
I let him ramble for a solid ten minutes until his voice cracked and went hoarse. Met with my dead silence, he finally choked on his words. His eyes stayed glued to the floorboards.
I finally spoke, my tone even. "Get up." Sebastian froze. He stayed planted on his knees. "Margot—" "I said, get up." He slowly pushed himself off the hardwood.
He stood rigid in the center of the room. His arms hung heavy at his sides.
He still couldn't meet my gaze. "Consider this your one and only warning, Sebastian," I said. "You saw the HR email. You have a new job. Do it. One thousand employees.
You don't miss a single one. You hit that quota, and maybe I’ll pretend this little stunt never happened." His head snapped up. Shock widened his eyes.
He opened his mouth to spit out another pathetic apology, but I raised a hand, silencing him instantly. "Save it.
I'm done listening to your excuses." I kept my voice perfectly level. "I gave you a way out. Figure out your boundaries.
It’s my birthday, and I refuse to let your mess ruin the rest of my night. Go sleep in the guest room. Get out of my sight." I waved him off dismissively.
Sebastian clenched his jaw. Defeated, he turned on his heel and dragged himself down the hall. The next morning, I walked downstairs. Sebastian already sat at the dining table.
He wore his usual customtailored suit. Not a single hair out of place. He acted like last night never happened.
The second he saw me, he shot up and pulled out my chair. "Morning, Margot. Did you sleep okay? Marge prepared your favorite breakfast.
Eat it while it's hot." He glossed over the humiliating mess he made last night. He actually thought he could just brush his mess under the rug.
In his arrogant head, he still ruled the office as the untouchable VP. I slid into the chair and shot him a sideways glance. "Done eating?
Head to the office." Sebastian let out a visible sigh of relief. "Yeah, I'll pull the car around. Wait for me at the front door." He snatched his keys off the counter.
The Maybach keys. He honestly thought he dodged a bullet. "Hold it," I said, my voice sharp enough to cut glass. "Put the keys down." Sebastian stopped dead in his tracks.
He turned around, looking at me in confusion. I ignored him and gestured for Winston. Our butler swiftly stepped into the dining room carrying two items.
A cheap, polyester blue shortsleeve polo stamped with our corporate logo. And a beatup, scratched car key plastered with an Admin Fleet neon sticker. Sebastian's smile froze.
He gritted his teeth, his face flushing red. "Margot, drop the joke. I'm the Vice President. If a client sees me in this getup, it doesn't just humiliate me.
It humiliates the entire company!" Chapter 4 I let out a cold, sharp laugh, watching his little performance. "Sebastian. You really haven't grasped reality yet, have you?
That HR memo took effect last night. The entire company knows you drive for a living now. Executives ride in the Maybach.
Chauffeurs drive the admin fleet van." I pointed at the cheap, folded fabric on the table. "Company policy strictly mandates a uniform for fleet drivers. Put it on.
Or don't." I checked my watch, my tone flat. "Refusing the uniform counts as an unexcused absence. Three strikes, and HR automatically terminates your contract.
And since you broke our marriage vows, you walk away with absolutely nothing. You will personally cough up every single share of stock you own.
Your choice." I didn't give him room to argue. He only had one option: obey. He never called the shots in this house. Sebastian clenched his fists so hard his knuckles turned white.
A thick blue vein throbbed against his temple. The man worshipped his ego, but he worshipped money more. Stripped of his wealth, his fragile pride meant nothing.
He sucked in a harsh breath. Jaw locked tight, he snatched the polyester polo off the table. "Fine.
I'll wear it." He looked at me, playing the ultimate victim. "Margot, if doing this helps you blow off steam, I'll do it. I'll prove my loyalty to you.
This little test means nothing." He stayed frozen in place. Waiting for me to cave. Waiting for me to feel sorry for him.
A vicious smirk cut across my face. "I suggest you stop wasting time. Morning rush hour peaks right now. Dispatch just pinged your first ride.
Don't keep the employees waiting, Chauffeur Sebastian." Humiliated, he bolted out the front door. Twenty minutes later, I slid into the leather back seat of the Maybach.
I booted up my iPad, syncing directly to the admin van's internal dashcam. Sebastian glared at the road on the live feed, his face dark with rage. "Margot! You crazy bitch!
Argh!" He slammed his palms against the steering wheel. Clearly, nobody informed him the corporate fleet vehicles came permanently wired with 24/7 surveillance.
I let out a dry, mocking laugh. Cracking already? Wait until he figured out who requested his very first ride. Skylar.
Outside the corporate headquarters, the morning rush hour hit full swing. Hundreds of employees swarmed the front plaza, gripping their coffee cups.
Sebastian idled the bulky van a block away. He refused to pull up to the main entrance.
The sheer embarrassment paralyzed him. "Stop stalling or I mark you absent," I fired off a quick voice memo.
On the live feed, Sebastian hurled his phone against the passenger seat in a blind rage. But he swallowed his pride and threw the van into drive.
He crept up to the designated pickup zone. Skylar stood right at the curb, blissfully touching up her lip gloss in a tiny compact mirror. The van's tinted window rolled down.
Sebastian's furious, dark face appeared in the frame. Skylar froze.
The expensive lipstick slipped from her fingers and dropped to the ground. "S—Sebastian?!" Dozens of passing coworkers stopped dead in their tracks.
They stared at their former VP gripping a steering wheel in a cheap blue polo, their jaws practically hitting the floor.
Chapter 5 Sebastian gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white.
He wanted the ground to swallow him whole. "Get in!" he barked through gritted teeth. "Haven't you embarrassed me enough?" Skylar stood paralyzed on the curb. "W—Why are you a driver?" She simply couldn't process it.
Right on cue, a companywide email notification pinged in unison across the entire plaza.
My phone buzzed with it too. "HR MEMO: Per board resolution, former Vice President Sebastian has been stripped of all executive duties effective immediately due to gross misconduct.
He is reassigned to the Admin Fleet as a fulltime chauffeur. To facilitate daily commuting, Chauffeur Sebastian will now provide shuttle services.
All employees are required to rate his service. Note: Approval ratings directly impact Chauffeur Sebastian's KPIs!" A splitsecond of dead silence fell over the plaza
