Years later, Pierce stood under the blinding flash of cameras, the Medal of Honor heavy on his chest.
A reporter shouted over the noise. "Commander, what's your biggest regret?" Pierce fell dead silent. His jaw clenched.
The microphone picked up the sharp, broken hitch of his breath. "I postponed a promised cherry blossom trip, and it cost me the woman I loved most." The press room erupted in laughter.
They thought the hardened commander was cracking a joke. They didn't know it was the brutal truth. I had been three months pregnant. My mild depression was suffocating.
I begged him to file for leave, just to take me to see the cherry blossoms. He stood me up. The next morning, my phone buzzed with the trending hashtag. There he was on my screen.
Pierce and Chelsea were kissing passionately on the street, and his eyes held a loss of control I had never seen before. That was the moment my heart truly died. I didn't scream.
I didn't remind him that I had traded my last ounce of pride to beg for this marriage.
I just quietly signed the divorce papers and mailed them to his family's estate. … Chapter 1 The morning after the papers reached the military base, Victoria showed up at my front door.
The usually poised and elegant socialite was so guiltridden she couldn't even meet my eyes. "Blair," she gripped my hands earnestly. "Pierce is a bastard. He ruined this.
But for the sake of our families—for the baby in your belly—I am begging you. Give him one last chance. Just seven days.
If he still acts like a fool, I will personally fasttrack your divorce papers." My hand drifted down to rest over the slight curve of my stomach.
Memories clawed their way to the surface—back to when my parents had been stationed at a volatile border zone.
A cartel led by Viper, desperate for bargaining chips, had hijacked a convoy of military brats. Pierce and I had been dragged into the dark.
Through the suffocating pitchblack of that hostage room, Pierce shoved me securely behind his back. "Don't look," he whispered, his body shielding mine. "I've got you." Viper's men beat him until his face was unrecognizable, but his bloody, bruised fingers never once let go of mine.
When the extraction team finally pulled us out, he was strapped to a stretcher, barely breathing. Yet he struggled to hook his pinky around mine. "We made a promise.
I'll always protect you." Maybe a foolish part of me was still chained to that promise. I gave Victoria my nod. Pierce walked through the front door hours after she left.
He dropped his duffel, acting completely oblivious to the explosive photos that had dominated the internet for three days. "Emergency combat drills," he said, shrugging off his tactical jacket. "Heavy ops.
Couldn't make it home." He walked over, his boots heavy on the floorboards. "Didn't you want to see the cherry blossoms? I booked the summit resort. Pack a bag.
We're leaving tonight." A heavy silence settled between us. "Okay," I finally whispered. The three days at the mountain resort passed exceptionally peacefully.
Pierce muted his comms. He walked with me beneath the endless canopy of blooming cherry blossoms, brushing fallen pink petals from my hair.
He even brewed chamomile tea to ease my nausea. It was a flawless illusion of our honeymoon phase. On our final evening, we sat on the private terrace overlooking the summit.
I smoothed down the thin fabric of my blushpink knit dress, lowering myself onto the wicker loveseat.
Before I could settle, Pierce's arm hooked around my waist, pulling me flush against his hard thighs. My spine snapped straight. "Pierce. I'm pregnant." He leaned in.
The rough, hot stubble of his jaw grazed the sensitive skin below my ear. "I checked with Todd," he murmured, his voice carrying a burning heat. "Light outdoor activity after the first trimester… it's good for you.
And the baby." I didn't resist anymore and let him hold me. The evening breeze carried crushed petals over our shoulders. It felt like a quiet sigh. Or a cage snapping shut.
Three hours later, the mountain chill seeped in. We walked back toward the main lobby, his large, calloused hand engulfing mine.
I was admiring the floral displays illuminating the glass doors when the tension in his grip spiked. Pierce stopped dead in his tracks. I followed his frozen stare.
Chelsea stood just inside the sliding doors. She wore a crisp white fieldmedic uniform, a blue overseas deployment pin gleaming on her collar. She looked exhausted.
Stray petals clung to her shoulders. Her redrimmed eyes swam with unshed tears, looking exactly like a fragile, abandoned stray. Pierce's fingers ripped away from mine.
He instinctively took a half step forward before forcing himself to stop. His tall figure seemed a bit stiff at that moment.
Ultimately, he tightened his grip on my hand and walked quickly out of the lobby. Chapter 2 He chose me. He walked away with me.
Yet the oxygen in our suite vanished, leaving a crushing, suffocating weight in its place. Pierce stood silently by the window smoking, while outside, cherry trees swayed gently.
I pushed myself off the velvet sofa. "I need air." He didn't turn. He didn't even flinch. I retreated to the empty resort lounge, sinking into a leather armchair.
Time bled away until Chelsea slid into the seat across from me, gripping a steaming ceramic mug.
She still had light calluses on her fingertips from holding a scalpel, and faint lipstick marks were pressed onto the side of the cup. I had zero energy for her toxic games.
I planted my feet to leave, but her soft, venomous voice pinned me down. "Blair, are you enjoying this? Feeling like you won?" I met her gaze.
Her redrimmed eyes burned with resentment. "If I hadn't volunteered for the Doctors Without Borders deployment in the Congo—if I hadn't given up my place by his side—you would be nothing to him." I felt a prick in my heart.
I forced my breathing to steady, holding her manic stare. "And?" Her knuckles turned slightly white as she gripped the teacup. "Watch me," she whispered, her voice laced with paranoia. "One word.
I say the word, and Pierce will file those divorce papers himself." I suddenly found it ridiculous. "You took an oath to save lives, Doctor.
Are you really throwing that away to play the desperate homewrecker?" The color drained from Chelsea's face.
She grabbed the hem of her scrub top, her voice dropping into a vicious hiss. "Ask Pierce. Ask him who the real mistake is.
Ask him who actually feels like the interloper in his life!" "Who the homewrecker is, is defined by law and morality, not your delusions." I shot her one last glacial look, turned my back, and walked away.
My fingers shook as I dialed Pierce's number. His custom ringtone echoed through the deadsilent corridor. It bled from behind the heavy steel door of the emergency stairwell.
I tracked the sound. Through the narrow glass panel, bathed in the sickly yellow glow of the emergency lights, stood Pierce.
He had Chelsea pinned gently against the cinderblock wall, his large, calloused thumb reverently brushing a speck of dust from her collar. He glanced down at his glowing screen.
He killed the call. Zero hesitation. Chelsea stretched onto her tiptoes. She pressed her lips against his, a quiet, devastatingly intimate claim.
The sight hit me like a bullet to the chest, knocking the breath out of me and leaving my knees weak. The floor completely vanished beneath my boots. I staggered back.
I retreated to our suite and closed the door. I slid down the cold wood paneling until I hit the floor, feeling as if all the oxygen had been drained away.
The digital clock flashed past midnight when the deadbolt clicked. Pierce stepped inside. He spotted me chained to the window seat.
His dark brows snapped together. "Why are you awake? You need sleep for the baby." I took a slow breath, willing my voice to stay steady. "Take me home, Pierce." His jaw locked.
The temperature in the room plummeted. "Is this about Chelsea?" "Yes." I met his stare, the former softness in my eyes now gone. "Is that a problem?" He broke eye contact, shifting his weight. "The mountain roads are pitch black.
Petals make the asphalt slick.
It's too dangerous to drive now," he deflected, his tone dismissive and evasive. "I'll have Preston bring the armored SUV at dawn." "I am leaving right now." I dug my heels in.
The final, pathetic ember of hope I harbored for this man suffocated and died the second he looked away. His temper snapped.
He surged to his feet, hurling his tactical jacket against the leather sofa. "Fine!
We leave now!" He tore through the room, shoving our gear into his duffel with frantic, aggressive force. He was running. And he never looked at me again.
Chapter 3 I stepped through the resort's sliding doors. A swarm of reporters surrounded Chelsea. Camera flashes strobed against the pitchblack sky.
She stood in her white doctor's uniform amidst the falling cherry blossom petals, her face pale. "Doctor Chelsea, you bypassed protocol to see Commander Pierce immediately after your deployment.
Are you two involved?" "You are a combat medic actively destroying a military marriage.
Do you care about the impending courtmartial?" "Alienation of affection carries legal weight, Doctor. Care to comment?" The questions hit like jagged shrapnel.
Chelsea’s eyes burned red. She fiercely gripped the hem of her uniform, her frail frame trembling against the mountain wind. She played the perfect, fragile victim.
A heavy thud echoed behind me. Pierce dropped his tactical duffel.
He shoved his way straight through the barricade of lenses and microphones, violently throwing himself in front of her. "Doctor Chelsea just returned from an active combat zone!" he said, his voice ringing with unquestionable authority. "We are strictly discussing her Ramstein Base reassignment.
Anyone slandering a military family or a combat medic will face the full force of the Department of Defense!" The press erupted into chaos. Pierce ignored them.
He clamped a hand over Chelsea's shoulder, shielding her as he shoved her into the passenger seat of his armored Jeep. The heavy tires squealed.
They crushed the fallen pink petals into the asphalt, spitting gravel as the vehicle tore down the dark mountain switchbacks. I stood alone in the cool spring night.
The red glow of his taillights bled into the shadows. A stray petal drifted into my open palm. The phantom warmth dissipated instantly. But it couldn't warm my cold heart.
After a long time, I finally managed a selfdeprecating smile. I swiped a harsh hand across my stinging eyes, pivoting on my heel.
I forced one numb leg in front of the other, walking away from the mountain that suffocated my last shred of hope. — "Commander and Combat Medic Share Midnight Kiss!
Elite Military Marriage in Ruins!" Victoria spat out the trending headline syllable by syllable.
She violently slammed her custom smartphone against the marble coffee table. "Pierce, what the hell are you doing?" Pierce stood dead center in the living room, his combat boots planted firm. "Cyber Command is handling it.
Those tags will flatline in twenty minutes." "Do you think I care about PR?" Victoria shrieked, her manicured finger snapping toward me. "Blair is pregnant!
You abandoned her at that remote mountain resort! If she wrecked on those slick roads—" Pierce's rigid spine snapped. He finally dragged his gaze to me. His jaw clamped shut.
A harsh swallow broke the silence in the room. I stared blankly at my glowing screen, completely shutting him out.
Every word on that trending hashtag felt like a thousand paper cuts, slowly bleeding me dry. My screen glitched. The algorithm forcefed me a brandnew hashtag.
PierceChelseaDecadeAtTheBorder My thumb tapped the link. The first picture was a photo of them at the border marker from their youth.
Chelsea wore a simple white tee, a radiant, unfiltered smile stretching across her face as she leaned her head against his shoulder.
Pierce’s large hand rested casually, fiercely protective, against the small of her back. The raw, effortless intimacy in his eyes punched the air straight out of my lungs.
He never looked at me like that. Not once in our entire marriage. A bitter wave of regret washed over me. I traded my dignity for a lie.
The screaming match in the living room faded into white noise. I dropped my phone on the sofa, turned my back on the Pierce family's shouting, and locked myself in the master suite.
Scalding water blistered my skin in the shower. I dried off. I sat on the edge of the mattress. The bedroom door finally clicked open, and Pierce stepped inside.
Chapter 4 I ignored him. I dragged the towel through my damp hair and clicked the remote. The Armed Forces Network flared to life on the flat screen.
Chelsea’s pristine voice filled the suite. "…In a combat zone, my safety comes last. I sacrificed everything for this mission. Even love." Pierce lunged for the remote.
I swatted his hand away. "Dr. Chelsea. A true martyr." "Cyber wiped the trending tags," he bit out, his jaw locked tight.
I tilted my head, meeting his gaze. "And the source of the PR nightmare?
How are you handling the good doctor?" His eyes darted away. "Her segment gets cut tomorrow." "That's it?" I chuckled lightly. "I guess military adultery laws only apply to certain people." Pierce’s expression turned lethal. "Blair.
Drop it." The pure, unfiltered annoyance in his eyes felt like a hand crushing my windpipe. My chest caved in. The oxygen vanished.
A full minute bled out before I could force a sound past the tight knot in my throat. "Loud and clear." At dawn, I had Hunter drive the armored SUV straight to my parents' estate. "Mom.
I'm filing for divorce." Miriam didn't flinch.
She exhaled a long, heavy breath, resting her hand over mine. "When you begged for this marriage a year ago, I warned you about military life.
If you're done… I've got your back." The taut string in my heart suddenly relaxed. I sagged against the kitchen counter, taking my first real breath in days.
Pierce’s combat boots hit our marble foyer precisely at noon. "Miriam.
I brought that imported Darjeeling for you and Robert." He flashed his perfect, mediatrained smile. "I'm taking Blair to the Ramstein base mixer." The polite, polished facade made my stomach churn.
My sevenday countdown with Victoria was still ticking.
Before Miriam could tear him apart, I stepped into his personal space. "Let's go." The armored GWagon swallowed us in suffocating silence.
Pierce glanced at the rearview mirror, studying my hollow expression. "First time at the Ramstein officer’s club," he murmured, his tone calculatedly soft. "I'll introduce you to the brass wives." I stared out the tinted window.
Dead silent. Married for over a year, and this was the first time Pierce had ever acknowledged me publicly. It was a sick joke, really.
We pushed through the heavy double doors of the banquet hall. Highranking officers clinked bourbon glasses.
Wives in designer dresses swarmed us, flashing blinding smiles and congratulating us on the baby. Every single person in this room had seen the viral photos last night.
Not a single eye twitched. My stomach churned. "I need air." I shoved past Pierce’s shoulder and bolted for the glass patio doors. The freezing German wind hit my flushed skin.
I staggered toward the hedgerow bordering the VIP garden. Low voices drifted from the shadows.
Two base MPs leaned against the brickwork, smoking. "Calling this a 'mixer' is wild," one scoffed. "It's literally a birthday party for Maverick." "Are you blind?
That dog is royalty." The second MP flicked his ash. "Commander Pierce and Doctor Chelsea raised that hound together on their first tour.
Everyone knows it's the Commander's firstborn son." My heart skipped a beat. An entire military base, a room full of decorated officers. All of them smiling to my face.
All of them keeping their mouths shut while my husband threw a lavish banquet for a dog he raised with Chelsea. A fractured, breathless sound tore from my lips.
I pivoted on my heel. I marched straight toward the K9 kennels. Chapter 5 I pushed open the heavy chainlink gate.
Chelsea crouched on the concrete, her fingers buried deeply into the thick neck fur of a massive, lethallooking German Shepherd. "Are you here to visit Maverick too, Blair?" she asked, glancing up with a sickeningly sweet smile. "When Pierce and I pulled him out of that border minefield, we fought for days over his name." I stared at her, my pulse dead calm. "It’s a strong name.
Makes me wonder what you’ll name your future kids." The mask slipped.
Chelsea’s gaze dropped to the slight curve of my stomach, a vicious sneer twisting her lips. "Pierce and I will give our kids perfect names," she hissed. "But yours?
Yours won't get the chance." She released the tactical collar. "Maverick, attack!" The highlytrained K9 launched off the concrete like a missile.
I violently twisted my torso sideways, my hands blindly snatching the heavy nylon leash in midair. I ripped it backward with everything I had.
The violent shift in momentum yanked Chelsea forward. She slammed facefirst into the brutal concrete. I cleared the dog's snapping jaws, but the sheer force threw me backward.
My spine slammed into the hard ground. A piercing cramp shot through my lower abdomen. Combat boots thundered against the pavement. Pierce tore through the gate.
He didn't even glance my way.
He dropped to his knees, frantically hauling Chelsea against his chest. "Pierce…" Chelsea whimpered, her fingers weakly clutching his tactical vest. "I was just visiting Maverick… Blair just snapped.
She went after the K9. I tried to stop her…" Pierce’s head snapped toward me.
His eyes were sharp as knives. "Blair!" he roared, his voice vibrating with venom. "You’re unhinged enough to attack a military dog?
If Chelsea has a single scratch on her, I will end you." I forced my trembling legs to stand, staring blankly at my husband as he desperately cradled his ex.
A hollow laugh escaped my lips. "I'll be waiting." I grabbed the custom platinum band on my left hand. I ripped it off my finger and hurled it straight at his boots.
The crisp sound of metal hitting the ground echoed. Pierce stood frozen in place. "Pierce…" Chelsea gasped, perfectly timing her whimper. "My ankle.
I think it’s sprained." The hesitation vanished. He scooped her up bridal style, turning his back on me without a single backward glance.
I stood completely alone in the freezing kennel, staring at his retreating figure. Seconds later, I felt a warm liquid slide down my inner thighs.
The edges of my vision bled to black. The last thing I saw before the ground swallowed me was the broad, retreating back of the man I loved.
When I woke up, the smell of disinfectant stung my nose. I opened my eyes to blinding fluorescent lights. Miriam hovered over the sterile hospital bed. Her eyes were bloodshot.
Her trembling fingers crushed mine. "Blair…" Her voice violently cracked. "The baby is gone." My free hand drifted down. My stomach was perfectly, sickeningly flat. No flutters.
No warmth. Just a hollow, gaping crater beneath my ribs. My lungs seized. The oxygen evaporated from the room. A phantom blade carved out my insides, scraping bone.
Not a single tear fell. "Maybe," I rasped, staring at the deadwhite ceiling tiles. "This baby wasn't supposed to be here." Across the room, the Armed Forces Network hummed on the wallmounted flat screen. "Commander Pierce spotted escorting combat medic Chelsea to her medical evaluations," the anchor chirped over Broll footage. "The decorated duo looked incredibly cozy today." Chapter 6 I stared at the flat screen.
The familiar silhouette in the dress uniform felt like a complete stranger from another universe. That was fine. The phantom blade carving out my insides finally stopped twisting.
I was done bleeding for him. Two weeks later, the hospital discharged me. I stood in my childhood bedroom, sliding a dogeared paperback from the deepest corner of my bookshelf.
Faded polaroids slipped from the pages, fluttering to the hardwood. Pierce barking orders at the Ramstein training grounds. Pierce standing watch at the border checkpoint.
Pierce glancing back at me under the snowcapped Bavarian Alps. Years of unspoken, sincere devotion stared back at me. I flipped to the title page.
My own teenage handwriting mocked me in faded blue ink: "Marrying into the military means making peace with the waiting.
But when the disrespect outweighs the loyalty, you cut your losses." Hot moisture blurred the ink. A dull, suffocating ache hollowed out my chest.
He had abandoned me for Chelsea over and over again. He had escorted Chelsea to a routine medical checkup on the exact day I had miscarried his child.
The damage he inflicted was completely incalculable. "Message received," I whispered to the yellowed paper.
I dumped the entire book and the polaroids straight into the trash can. "Mom," I rasped, turning to Miriam. "I need a transfer.
I want to enroll in the Munich Military Academy." Miriam’s bloodshot eyes locked onto mine.
She gave a curt nod. "I'll make the calls." I drove back to the military estate to pack my final bags. Pierce’s armored Jeep idled in the driveway.
He marched up the front steps, his dark brows snapping together at the sight of my luggage. He frowned, looking at the suitcase in my hand. "Finally decided to show up?
You disappear from the base for two weeks, and you don't even have an explanation?" I opened my mouth to speak. His custom ringtone blared, cutting me off.
The screen lit up in his palm. Chelsea: Pierce, my leg is throbbing again… The annoyance vanished from his features. Panic immediately flashed across his expression.
Without another glance at me, he turned and strode away. The heavy tires squealed out of the driveway.
Watching his back disappear into the Jeep, my last bit of hesitation scattered with the wind. Midnight struck when Pierce finally pushed through the front door. He froze.
Our families sat like stone statues in the dimly lit living room. Victoria rigidly turned her head away, refusing to look at her son.
Robert slid a thick manila folder across the mahogany coffee table. "Pierce. This is the divorce agreement.
Sign it." The word "divorce" ripped through Pierce's chest like a sniper round. His jaw locked tight.
His gaze swept over the suffocating silence of the four elders. "If Blair wants a divorce, she can look me in the eye and say it herself," he snarled. He stormed past the sofas.
His heavy tactical boots hammered against the floorboards. He shoved open the master bedroom door and slammed it shut behind him.
The impact of the slamming door shook the entire wall. Leaning against the door, he finally realized how terrifyingly empty the room was.
Only his olivedrab uniforms hung in the massive closet. The vanity was stripped bare. Every single bottle of her skincare, every stray hair—gone.
A faint trace of her vanilla perfume clung to the pillows. A ghost of a memory.
He took out his phone and dialed repeatedly. "The number you have reached is unavailable." He mashed the dial button again. And again. Total radio silence.
She had blocked him on every grid. A sharp knock hammered against the wood. "Pierce. Open this door." Victoria’s voice vibrated with lethal fury. He wrenched the handle down.
Victoria stared at his bloodshot, chaotic eyes. "Why won't you sign the damn papers?" "My marriage is between me and Blair." "Still playing the arrogant commander?" Victoria's voice violently cracked. "I warned you to protect her!
Instead, you turned this entire base into a circus for that homewrecking medic!" A bitter scoff ripped from Pierce’s throat. "You forced this marriage on us.
Now you want to pull the plug?
Did anyone bother asking our unborn child what they want?" Victoria stood up abruptly. "The baby?" she shrieked, the sound tearing through the silent estate. "Blair lost the baby at the K9 kennels!" Chapter 7
