Preview · Chapter 1

Seven years abroad, and I returned to locked gates at my own estate. Security treated me like trash. A new maid scoffed at my name.

A neighbor sneered, branding me a delusional gold digger hunting for a quick payout. A bitter laugh scraped my throat.

I yanked out my phone, dialing Uncle Reginald to override the gates. Three familiar silhouettes stepped into my path, blocking my way. No tight hugs. No tears.

Just cold rejection. "Don't even think about stepping inside," Hayes snapped. "That scholarship student lives here now. You know how toxic this circle gets.

She needs the status to survive the elitists." Chase crossed his arms. "Everyone knows you left. The spot sat empty.

We let her take over as Harlow for now." Callan stepped forward, his glare sharp. "She struggles with intense anxiety. So fragile. If you expose her, the humiliation destroys her.

She might even end it all. I care about this girl. I refuse to let her die. She stays Harlow.

Turn around and go back to wherever you came from." Chapter 1 They wanted to steal my entire existence to give a pickme girl a leg up? "Are you out of your damn minds?" I demanded. "If you want to give her a life, take her to your own estates!

Beg your parents to legally adopt her! What gives you the right to hijack my name?" Callan’s brow furrowed in displeasure. "Stop acting like a spoiled brat.

I made this decision." He seized my wrist, his grip bruising. "She came from the system. Just like me. I know that pain, and I want her to thrive.

You’ve been dripping in privilege since birth, Harlow. Even with your parents gone, you live in a bubble of luxury. I’m only asking you to hand over your life for two years.

Why do you have to be so selfish?" His absolute entitlement made my blood run cold. I stared at him, feeling the phantom breath of a starving wolf against my neck. Callan.

Out of the three of them, he held my entire heart. I pulled him out of that orphanage myself. My parents wanted a companion for me.

I rejected every kid in that sterile building until I saw him. Frail. Sickly. His eyes locked onto mine with a desperate, silent plea. Save me.

Beneath the grime, he possessed a sharp, cold beauty. My chest ached for him. I begged my father to bring him home. He survived.

He grew strong, but that icy demeanor never thawed for anyone else. Just me. Everyone swore I was his exception.

I swallowed that lie for years, only to choke on the truth today. "I know you miss home," Callan continued, his voice adopting a sickeningly gentle cadence. "I planned to fly out and visit you a few times.

But Harper gets intense separation anxiety. She physically sickens when I leave. She needs me more than you do. So back down, Harlow.

Let her have this." I trembled with anger. "In your nightmares," I spat. "I'm throwing her out on the street. And you three are going with her. I'm calling Reginald.

Every single contract, every partnership between our families—dead." I swiped my screen. Panic flashed across Hayes and Chase’s faces. "Don't let her talk!" They lunged.

Chase clamped a heavy hand over my mouth. Hayes ripped the device from my fingers, pinning my arm. I thrashed wildly, sinking my teeth directly into Hayes’s flesh.

He roared, stumbling back. A highpitched shriek shattered the air.

Harper stood at the end of the driveway, the leash of a massive German Shepherd clutched in her hand. "You bit my Hayes!" she shrieked, her face twisting.

She unclipped the carabiner. "Bandit, attack!" The canine launched like a missile. Fangs sank deep into my forearm. The dog whipped its head, tearing through fabric and flesh.

I shrieked in agony. I kicked, thrashing my arm to dislodge the jaw. Bandit clamped down harder. The crushing pressure cracked against the bone.

My three childhood protectors didn't flinch. They watched the blood spill. Chase even let out a long, relieved exhale. Pain blinded me.

My knees buckled, and I crashed into the hard concrete. Hayes cradled his bitten hand, staring at Harper with a deeply touched expression. "Harper is incredible.

She didn't even hesitate to protect me." Harper planted her hands on her hips, practically vibrating with smug satisfaction. "You guys protect me.

I protect you." She glared down at my bleeding form. "This bitch is toxic. A little bite is way too easy on her. Lock her up.

Let the pain teach her a lesson." Callan whistled sharply. Bandit released my shredded arm, trotting back to him.

Callan smoothed Harper’s hair, his voice dropping an octave. "Take Bandit inside, Harper." A delicate blush rushed to her cheeks. "Okay, Callan." She disappeared through my front doors.

He snapped his gaze back to me. The affection vanished, his gaze slowly turning cold. "Weaponizing your uncle against us? Harper is right.

You need a lesson." He snapped his fingers at the estate staff hovering on the porch. "Drag her to the storage shed." Chapter 2 Untreated dog bites festered quickly.

That night, I developed a high fever. Consciousness slipped away, replaced by fragmented nightmares.

A cool, damp cloth pressed against my forehead dragged me back to the waking world. My eyelids fluttered open. Hayes hovered over my trembling form, gripping a fever patch.

Conflicting emotions darkened his gaze the second my eyes met his. "You push back too hard, Harlow. We only borrowed your name to give Harper a fighting chance.

She saved my life once. You don't understand." I slapped his hand away. A bitter laugh tore from my dry, cracked throat. "She saved you?

And I didn't?" The Hayes family built their empire on philanthropy. Spotless reputation. Pure money. That pristine image painted a massive target on their backs.

Rivals tried to drag his father into dirty deals. He refused. Retaliation came fast, and it aimed straight at their only heir. Thugs cornered Hayes at our prep school.

They shoved him into the equipment shed after hours and doused the walls in gasoline. He never came home that night. Panic drove me back to campus.

His muffled screams echoed through the dark. Flames licked the roof. I threw myself at the blazing door. Searing metal blistered my palms.

Skin peeled from my fingers as I ripped the lock open and dragged him out of the inferno. Hayes tensed. His jaw worked, searching for an excuse. The storage room door slammed open.

Harper waved at him, her lip curling in disgust as she glared down at me. "Hayes, come here! Get away from her. Everyone knows how girls act abroad.

She spent seven years running wild. Who knows what kind of nasty diseases she brought back." She leaned into the man behind her. "I stay completely clean.

Right, Callan?" Callan soaked up her attention. A sickeningly fond smile softened his sharp features. "Harper speaks the truth. Come upstairs, Hayes.

Harper’s friends are waiting to show off their new designer bags. They expect you in the thirdfloor lounge." Hayes froze in place. Impatience flashed across Harper's face.

She stepped straight over my prone body to grab his arm. Her designer heel dug directly into my stomach. A choked whimper ripped from my throat in agony.

Harper sneered, twisting her sole into my flesh before stepping off. "Hayes—" she whined, dragging him toward the door.

Hayes opened his mouth, but she already pulled him into the hallway. The heavy door clicked shut. Callan stooped down and scooped me into his arms. Revulsion clawed at my chest.

I struggled and hit him. My uninjured hand struck his cheek with a vicious crack. He barely blinked. He carried me up the stairs and dropped me onto a leather sofa.

An estate doctor stepped out of the shadows, clutching a medical bag. "Clean it," Callan ordered, his voice devoid of emotion. "No local anesthetics.

Pain makes a lesson stick." Ice threaded through his dark amusement. The doctor ripped the bloodcrusted fabric from my arm.

Fresh agony exploded through my nerves. "Our engagement still stands," Callan murmured, watching the doctor scrub the mangled flesh. "Once Harper gets bored, we tie the knot.

You hold my heart, Harlow. Always have." The needle pierced my raw skin. Black dots danced across my vision. Cold sweat drenched my spine.

Fat tears spilled over my lashes, dripping onto the leather. A flicker of something resembling pity crossed Callan's face. He reached out, his thumb brushing my wet cheek.

I snapped my jaw shut, sinking my teeth into his fingers. Callan’s brow twitched. He yanked his hand free.

Without missing a beat, he pressed his thumb directly into my open, bleeding wound. A silent scream locked in my throat. My lungs seized.

He kept the pressure there until I gasped for air, then slowly pulled back. His stare grew even more unfriendly. "Seven years away turned you into a feral mutt.

Looks like you need heavy training after the wedding." The doctor sighed, reaching for fresh sutures to repair the torn wound. The room spun.

This time, the blinding pain dragged me straight into the dark. Chapter 3 Vibrating bass tore me from the dark. I cracked my eyes open, disoriented.

The heavy thumping leaked from the adjacent room. My mother’s gallery. A sanctuary holding her life’s work in delicate porcelain. An absolute zeronoise zone.

The lowfrequency vibrations alone could shatter the glazes. I forced myself up, biting the inside of my cheek to stay conscious through the searing pain in my arm.

I staggered toward the heavy oak doors. Laughter and clinking glasses spilled out before I even crossed the threshold.

A crowd of trustfund kids hovered over the display cases, cheering. "Everyone knows Callan and Harlow are obsessed with each other! The mood is right—give us a show! Kiss! Kiss!

Kiss!" Harper curled against Callan’s chest. He tipped her chin up.

After a brief, soft kiss, she buried her face in her hands, giggling into his shirt. "Okay, okay, stop teasing us," Harper cooed, waving a manicured hand. "You guys said you loved my mother's porcelain, right?

That’s why I invited you. Pick whatever you want. It's all free." A collective gasp ripped through the room. "Are you serious? These pieces go for millions at auction!

Harper, you're the best!" The crowd surged forward. They yanked open the hermetically sealed climatecontrolled cabinets. Clumsy hands pawed at the fragile art.

Pieces scraped together with sickening screeches. "Listen to that ring!" Harper cheered. "Millions of dollars sound so pretty!" A sharp crack of shattering ceramic exploded against my eardrums.

Adrenaline flooded my veins. I shoved through the crowd and cracked my uninjured palm directly across Harper's cheek. "Does this sound even prettier?" I hissed.

Dead silence fell over the gallery. Gasps broke the quiet. Fingers pointed in my direction. "Who the hell are you? Are you insane?

You just hit Harlow!" Harper crumpled into Callan’s arms, crying into her hands. "Callan… it hurts!" I dragged in jagged breaths, tasting copper where my teeth cut into my own tongue. "Harlow?" I laughed, the sound cold and hollow.

I looked down at her like scraped gum on a shoe. "Since when did my parents have another daughter? She's a fraud." Whispers erupted. Skeptical eyes bounced between us.

Nia, Harper’s best friend, stepped forward, her voice dripping with venom. "Harper isn't a fake. Why would Callan kiss her if she was?

Everyone in our circle knows Callan worships the ground Harlow walks on." Nia crossed her arms. "Ask him yourself if you don't believe us." The crowd murmured in agreement. "She's right.

Callan's obsession with Harlow is legendary." Callan met my gaze for a fraction of a second before nodding to the room. "I only love Harper." The world seemed to drop out from beneath my feet.

The ringing in my ears faded, replaced by the clamor of the crowd. A mocking sneer twisted my lips as the questions flew. "Then who is she? How did she get past security?

Why did she hit Harlow?" Callan sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose like an exhausted parent. "She’s a charity case I sponsor. She's been trying to climb into my bed for months.

I rejected her constantly. I never imagined she'd sink so low as to try and steal Harper's identity just to get close to me." A massive wave of relief washed over Harper’s face.

She ramped up the tears, her shoulders shaking pathetically. "Callan let you stay here because he felt sorry for you!" she sobbed. "How could you try to steal my life in front of my friends?

How could you humiliate me like this?" The moment she cried, the entire room mobilized to defend her.

She turned her tearstreaked face toward the two men flanking Callan. "Chase… Hayes… tell them." Chase set his jaw.

He refused to meet my eyes. "Harper is telling the truth," he forced out. "She is the real daughter of the Sterling family." Chapter 4 Chase. His family almost drowned in debt.

His parents were seconds away from a suicide pact, ready to take him with them. I couldn't watch it happen.

I liquidated my entire, prized jewelry collection to breathe life back into his family's dying company. Back then, he swore an oath to me.

He said in another life, he’d be my sworn protector, ready to die on my command. For years, he actually lived that lie.

He followed me like a faithful shadow, a knight guarding his queen. Now, he stood there and publicly erased my existence. The searing fever raged back to life, clawing at my sanity.

I bit down on my tongue again. Whitehot pain and the coppery tang of blood jolted my system, forcing my eyes open. Adrenaline spiked.

I grabbed a heavy decorative vase near the door and launched myself at Chase. Someone moved faster. Callan’s boot slammed into my sternum. The air sucked right out of my lungs.

I crumpled backward as Callan barely managed to pull Harper out of my trajectory. The vase hit the floor, exploding into a million jagged shards.

Callan’s usual icy composure shattered. He roared for the estate security lurking by the entrance. "Throw this bitch in the storage shed! No water. No food.

She stays locked in the dark until she learns her place.

No doctor touches her until she begs for forgiveness." I hacked up a glob of blood onto the polished floor, staring back at him with dead eyes. "I did nothing wrong." They dragged me to the warehouse and threw me onto the cold concrete.

I lay there, gasping, feeling my life leak out. Sometime later, the heavy metal door groaned. Chase stepped into the shadows.

Pain twisted his features as he looked down at me. "Why do you have to make this so hard on yourself?" I collected the bloody saliva pooling in my mouth and spat it directly onto his designer shoe. "Yeah.

Helping you back then… that was definitely making it hard on myself." His eyes went dark. He stooped down, reaching out to wipe the blood from my chin. I saw the opening. I lunged.

My teeth sank deep into his hand. I locked my jaw, pouring every ounce of agony, betrayal, and hatred into the bite.

I clamped down until my jaw ached, until the last bit of my strength evaporated, before finally letting go. "Next time we meet… we're enemies." Chase recoiled as if I'd stabbed him in the heart.

He looked at his bleeding hand, his mouth working silently, unable to force out a single word. He stood up, his posture defeated.

He fumbled for his phone, dropped it onto the concrete beside me, and stumbled out of the room without looking back. I wrapped my good hand around the cold device.

Rage reignited in my chest, burning through the exhaustion. I knew Uncle Reginald’s number by heart. One call. That’s all it would take to end this nightmare.

He’d burn this whole estate down to get to me. I needed to wait. Timing was everything. Too many guards. Too many people outside.

If they caught me with a phone, they’d bury me so deep I’d never see the light of day. I tried to force my racing heart to settle, to plan. Harper wouldn't let me.

The door swung open again. She stood in the frame, alone.

She didn't venture near me, content to stand near the doorway, looking down her nose at my broken form. "So you’re the real Harlow," she mused, her voice dripping with poison. "What does that title get you now?

You're just a delusional squatter in your own home." A cruel smile stretched across her face. "Here's a little secret for you.

Callan and I… we knew each other in the orphanage long before you showed up. He swore to give me the world.

After your parents took him in, he used the allowance they gave him to set me up in a luxury apartment.

He took care of me the entire time." A physical pang seized my heart, tighter than Callan's boot. "He told me I'm the only woman he's ever loved," Harper continued, clearly enjoying herself. "And his grand plan is to use the Sterling fortune and your Uncle Reginald’s company assets to build a kingdom for me.

Oh, I almost forgot." Her eyes gleamed with malice. "He planted moles in Reginald’s company years ago. One more push, and your uncle’s entire empire collapses.

When we’re done, you and that old man will be on your knees, begging us for scraps. I can't wait to watch." He planned to destroy everything. He was going after Uncle Reginald.

Harper stepped forward, kicking my shoulder. She frowned when I didn't cry out. "Get on your knees and crawl over here. Grovel to me, bitch.

If you beg good enough, maybe I'll tell Callan to slow down his plan." I ignored the agony in my limbs. I grabbed her ankle and yanked.

Harper shrieked as her feet went out from under her, hitting the concrete hard. Before she could process what happened, I flipped my body, pinning her to the floor.

I mounted her, gravity aiding my weakened muscles.

My good hand pulled back and cracked across her jaw with a vicious, satisfying force. "You want me on my knees?" I hissed, towering over her. "You’re not worthy to wipe my shoes.

Who the hell do you think you are?" Chapter 5 Harper let out a series of earpiercing shrieks. "Callan! Callan, help me!" Callan burst through the heavy doors.

He shoved me back angrily. "Harlow, you are unbelievable. Harper came here to apologize to you, and you attack her?" A hollow laugh scraped against my raw throat.

I used to think he was brilliant. He played the long game, hiding his true colors inside my home for years. But he was actually pathetic enough to buy Harper's garbage lies.

I dragged my battered body across the concrete. My bloody fingers clamped onto the fabric of his trousers.

I forced the words out, one agonizing syllable at a time. "You're going after Reginald's company. Aren't you?" The muscles in his leg locked. He didn't confirm it.

He didn't deny it either. "Your family can't monopolize the entire world forever, Harlow," he muttered, his voice devoid of guilt. "I'm just taking what I need to build a real empire." He pulled his leg free, tearing his pants from my grip.

He barked an order at the estate guards. "Padlock the door. Nobody opens this for three days.

Unless she gets on her knees and begs Harper for forgiveness." I lay on the freezing concrete. My teeth ground together so hard the bone ached. Years of pouring my soul into him.

Years of bleeding to fix him. I didn't save a broken boy. I invited a rabid animal into my sanctuary. I forced myself upright.

My trembling fingers dialed Uncle Reginald's private emergency line. Within the hour, an extraction team of blackclad security breached the perimeter. They pulled me from the dark.

On our way out, I sparked a lighter and dropped it into the shed to burn it down.

I ripped the diamond engagement ring off my finger and flicked it straight into the growing inferno. A clean break.

The next time our paths crossed, I would burn his entire life to ash. Blaring alarms shattered the estate's quiet.

Callan snapped his head up, his brow furrowing. "What the hell is that?" A frantic maid sprinted into the living room, gasping for air. "Callan! The storage shed!

It's up in flames!" Callan froze. "Which shed?" The maid stammered, twisting her apron. "The—the one holding the imposter." A heavy silence descended on the room.

Hayes sprinted to the floortoceiling windows. He shoved the glass panes open. Thick, black smoke billowed into the night sky, rising directly from the warehouse coordinates.

Panic struck all of their faces. "Get the extinguishers!

Call 911!" Chase yelled, his voice cracking. "Harlow is still in there!" Callan grabbed his arm, his expression twisting in cold calculation. "Just get her out yourselves.

Do not call the fire department. If the authorities show up, Harlow will expose her identity to them." Hatred flashed across Harper's eyes.

She masked it in a split second, burying her face in her hands. "Does she hate me that much?" she sobbed, forcing out crocodile tears. "She set a fire just to escape?

She wants you to call 911 so she can ruin my life in front of the cops!" Chase watched her cry. His panic morphed into hesitation. "Maybe… maybe we just try the hoses first.

We only call if it gets out of control." Phantom flames danced in Hayes's eyes. The memory of his own neardeath in that equipment room flooded his mind.

He yanked his phone from his pocket, dialing frantically. Harper lunged, smacking the device hard across the room.

It shattered against the marble floor. "Hayes, I said no!" Harper screamed. His desperate move caught her off guard, ripping her fragile mask completely off. "If we save her, fine.

If she burns—doesn't that just make it easier for me to take over?" she spat, her tone dripping with venom. "Didn't you promise to give me the ultimate life?" He wanted to scream at her.

This was not her life to take. How could she say that so casually while Harlow burned? He whipped his head toward his two best friends. Callan stared at the smoke.

Chase looked at the floor. Neither of them moved a single muscle to stop her.

Chapter 6 Hayes shoved Harper aside with disgust, pointing a shaking finger at Chase and Callan, who stood frozen like enchanted fools. "Are you two completely out of your minds?!" he screamed. "Harlow dragged us from the brink of hell more than once, and you’re standing here letting her burn to death?

We can bankroll ten thousand Harpers. There is only one Harlow!" Callan's pupils dilated. His mind spiraled back into the past.

Back in the orphanage, he had fought a boy twice his size to protect Harper from getting bullied. He lost. The older kid forced him to eat rancid, rotting slop off the floor.

A massive infection tore through his system. The cheap fever reducers did nothing. The staff dragged him into an isolation room and left him there to die quietly.

Harper ran as far away as she could. She never visited. His room became a forbidden zone. Nobody wanted to catch whatever was killing him. Until she pushed open the door.

A small, cool hand pressed against his forehead.

A sweet voice whispered in the dark. "You're burning up." He grabbed her hand like a drowning man seizing a lifeline. "Please… save me." One desperate plea, and she breathed life back into his lungs.

She treated him like her own blood. Every day, after prep school, she sat by his bedside during his IV drips. She narrated her entire day just to keep him anchored to the world.

She poured her soul into every birthday present. Where were those gifts now?

The handpainted cards, the meticulously stitched teddy bear, the custom silver cufflinks… He used to display them on his bedside table like religious relics.

When did they disappear? He dug into his memory. Harper. Harper had thrown them into the storage shed.

Harper sneered at the handcrafted items, calling them cheap trash. "She’s the heiress of the Sterling empire, and she gives you these dollarstore crafts?

She doesn't respect you at all, Callan.

A real heiress should be dropping millions on your birthday." He had stood there, completely numb, watching Harper bend the cards, smash the frames, and kick the bear into the corner.

Harper glared at Hayes, her chest heaving with indignation. "How can you speak to me like that, Hayes?! I am one of a kind! Why am I less than Harlow?

The only thing she did right was win the birth lottery!

If I had been born into the Sterling family, I'd be a hundred times the woman she is!" Hayes ignored her entirely, his eyes locked on Chase. "Make the call, damn it!" Harper shrieked, lunging forward to smack the phone from Chase’s grip again.

This time, Hayes’s boot caught her square in the stomach. She flew backward, crashing hard onto the marble floor.

Bandit heard the commotion and charged into the room, snarling at Hayes. In a fit of pure rage, Harper unclipped the heavy chain from the dog’s collar. "You kicked me! I hate you!

Kill them, Bandit!" Hayes swung a heavy kick directly into the dog’s ribs, sending it skidding across the floor.

Before it could recover, he shouted at a paralyzed maid for a length of thick rope.

He tackled the animal, pinning its head to the ground with his knee, and wrapped the rope tightly around its neck to control it.

He grabbed the struggling dog by the scruff and dragged it directly to where Harper lay gasping.

He forced the dog’s jaws open, pressing the exposed fangs straight toward Harper’s arm. "Let's see how much you enjoy the sensation," Hayes snarled.

Bandit, completely feral from the adrenaline and the tight rope, snapped his jaws shut the second the pressure released. Fangs sank directly into Harper’s forearm.

The sickening crunch of teeth hitting bone echoed through the room. Harper let out a miserable scream, struggling to break free. "Hayes! I'm sorry!

I'm sorry!" she sobbed, terror leaking from every syllable. "It hurts! Make him let go! I shouldn't have commanded him to attack!" Hayes’s eyes turned dead and cold.

His grip on the dog’s head tightened until the metallic scent of fresh blood filled the air. "Only you feel pain?" he spat, his voice devoid of mercy. "When you unleashed this beast on Harlow, did you ever stop to wonder if she felt it?

You sick bitch." Chapter 7
