"Vivienne Shaw, you win. Nathaniel is yours." The exwife of an Oscarwinning Best Actor put that line at the very bottom of a tenthousandword divorce post. Ten hours.
The number one trend never moved. The whole internet wanted the same answer. How does a woman get to homewreck an eightyear relationship? Good question. I was surprised too.
Because I'd been married for eight years myself. Quietly. Off the record. My kid already knows how to say Mama on a video call. Why would I want her secondhand goods?
Chapter 1 Nathaniel Pierce had announced his divorce. The post went up overnight and I didn't see it until morning.
It sat at number one all night and it was still there when I got up. Half the country had a theory about why. A few of them came to my comments to ask me directly.
Nathaniel and I had worked together plenty of times. He won his Oscar for a film we shot side by side. People liked to say the way he looked at me on screen couldn't be acting.
After it came out, the dating rumors ran for a long time. Rumors. That was all they were. Both agencies leaned into it anyway and sold us to the public as close friends.
We weren't that close. Coworkers was the accurate word. So I had no answer for his fans. And no reason to give one. The host still brought it up in my interview that morning. "Ms.
Shaw, what do you make of the Pierce divorce?" I let it slide off. "I'm sitting down with popcorn, same as everybody else." She wasn't done. "There have been rumors for years that you two are more than colleagues.
Now that he's single, is anything possible?" "Nothing is possible." I didn't leave a gap for her to work with. "Mr. Pierce and I are friends.
That's it." The clip aired, and the shippers arrived in force. [Break out the champagne. Our Oscar boy is finally free of that woman.] [Right?
All she ever did was use the kid to hold Nate hostage.] [Our girl said "nothing is possible" because of the timing. Obviously she can't be with Nate this week.] [Just friends. Sure.
Friends have a boyfriendgirlfriend version, hehe.] I read all of it and my head started to ache. We had shot together how many times now. We played a couple exactly once.
The script broke us up in the third act. Where the rest of it came from, I had no idea. And every scorchedearth comment they posted bought me a brandnew anti.
I finished the popcorn and let it go. Then that night a second divorce statement went up, and it put me in the blast radius.
Serena Vandermeer published a long post saying goodbye to her marriage. Ten thousand words of memory. You could feel how much she had loved him.
Six years of marriage, from grocery runs to screaming in the driveway. She walked the reader through every stretch of it.
His fans used to call her a lunatic who had never deserved him.
Because every time his studio played up a fake romance with a costar, Serena made sure the paparazzi caught the two of them holding hands on a sidewalk somewhere.
On the couples show they did together, she threw shade at his shippers, sometimes to their faces. Some of those shippers shipped us.
She looked straight into the camera that night. "It didn't end well on screen. Do certain people really expect better off screen?" Nathaniel's jaw locked. He held the smile anyway.
His fans were mortified that this was the woman he had married. Somebody dug that clip back up overnight. Ten million views before morning.
The top comment under it was two words. [Certain people.] Chapter 2 By sunrise the internet had flipped.
Now everyone felt terrible about how they'd talked to Serena. [You all say she rode his coattails.
I see a woman who gave eight years of her life to love.] [A wife hates that her husband is tangled up with another woman. Since when is that a crime?] Serena wrote well.
She laid their history out piece by piece. The night he announced the divorce, she wasn't sitting there numb.
She was writing their last chapter herself. [The first two years, she lived in a basement apartment with him.] [God.
I would not live in a basement for any man, Oscar or not.] [A Los Angeles basement in August. No air moving.
If you know, you know.] [Her love was never the cheap kind.] By that point even I was close to moved. Right up until the last line. "Vivienne Shaw, you win.
Nathaniel is yours." One sentence, and I was trending by midnight. The headline was built to travel. #SerenaLetsHerHaveHim Open the hashtag and every post inside it was about me.
Her essay had turned the whole thing around. She was the cleareyed girlboss icon now. I was the other woman who had gotten between them.
They flooded every account I had, demanding to know why I'd done it. God knows I was as blindsided as they were. I had been married eight years. Off the record.
Why would I want her secondhand goods? Serena's post named me in everything but the legal sense. I had wrecked her marriage.
Someone dug up an old shipper edit where the caption said the way he looked at me couldn't be faked.
Her new army filled the replies. [So he'd already cheated?] [Emotional cheating counts, sweetie.] [Disgusting.
Bet they were an onset couple for years.] [Wouldn't be the first time.
Happens on every production in this town.] Every time I had denied the stories, that got read as proof. [The louder the denial, the bigger the thing you're hiding.] [If she really wanted it dead, why not tell the shippers to stand down herself?] [She likes them calling her their guy's wife.
She just doesn't want to pay for it.] [Incredible. The girl who doesn't cave, everybody.] My own fans came out swinging. The whole platform turned into a total mess.
At the peak of it, Nathaniel posted. He denied cheating. Flat and calm. "Serena and I are divorcing because the love is gone.
No one else is involved." Her side didn't buy a word of it. [Oh please. Does "no one else" have a name?] [What a beautiful sentence. No one else.] [Looks like a statement.
Reads like he's clearing the name of the one he's actually carrying.] [Everyone knows love doesn't disappear.
It relocates.] [So hard to guess where.] The tenthousandword post bought Serena enormous goodwill. The people who had hated her loudest turned into her most loyal fans.
I was collateral damage from start to finish. My management team sat in a conference room for hours arguing about how to handle it.
In this business, responding is wrong and not responding is wrong. Connie was the only person in the industry who knew I was married.
She dropped her pen on the table. "So what, we drag your other half out of hiding to clean up somebody else's divorce?" I shook my head.
Eight years off the record, and I had never once used him. I wasn't going to start now. I said that too early.
Chapter 3 Keeping the marriage off the record was about protecting my own privacy.
I didn't want my personal life parked under a lens, followed and dissected by people who had never met me.
Lucky for me, my difficult other half was overseas and never looked at X anyway. Otherwise he'd have been in the replies before breakfast. My team landed on silence. Wait it out.
Everything Serena had thrown at me would go to a lawyer. We had already cut every commercial partnership that touched Nathaniel. We could not get out of the taping tomorrow.
And Nathaniel was on the guest list. The variety show was press for a film about to open. The film ran three separate storylines. He led one. I led another.
Normally each of us would be paired with the leads from our own storyline. The host wanted to ride the hype and put us on the same team. First game was Never Have I Ever.
The first couple kept it normal. Everyone lost two fingers, one at a time. Then it was the married pair's turn. Actual husband and wife. They had material.
They grinned at each other. "We went to the same college." I started to fold down a third finger. My sleeve slid back and the red birthmark on my wrist showed.
Nathaniel reached over and stopped my hand. "Vivienne. We went to the same college too." That surprised me. What were the odds?
He gave me a thin smile. "You really don't remember?" I did not. Every other guest at that table stared.
Another scandal had just dropped, live on tape, and I could feel it landing. "I lived off campus back then.
I don't remember much about anyone who lived on it." I found a smile somewhere. "Sorry, Mr. Pierce." That got us through the round.
Two rounds later, only two teams had fingers left. Us, and the married pair. They went for the kill. "We're each other's one that got away." I folded my last finger without arguing.
Nathaniel's hand stayed up. The host nearly came out of her chair asking who his one that got away was. He glanced at me.
His voice didn't change. "She's in this room." Nobody at that table moved. Out of nowhere, and I had no idea what he thought he was doing.
Every face in the studio made the same slow trip from him to me, wearing the same look. So it's her. I smiled. It cost me something. "Mr. Pierce, the round is each other's.
Both ways. Put your hand down." Whether he meant it or was working the room, I didn't leave him an inch. Then the episode aired. The editors cut every word I said after that.
What was left was four words. She's in this room. X came apart again. Our shippers camped under the clip and posted through the shelling.
Two days of this and I had figured out where they came from. They were his fans, mutated.
They couldn't stand the real wife, so any actress who worked with him got shipped with him instead.
I was just the biggest name of the bunch, and the one who looked best standing next to him. An audience member had filmed the whole exchange in the studio.
The editors had cut a flustered, blushing reaction shot of me into that moment. It was built out of nothing. My fans posted the raw footage.
Serena buried it with another post inside the hour. The headline read like it was aimed at Nathaniel. It wasn't. It was aimed at me.
Chapter 4 [To the woman you never let go of.] The post laid out ten years of Nathaniel Pierce being in love with me
